Fact Check: Did an anti-Taliban group vow to seek revenge for the Pahalgam terrorist attack?

India Today2 days ago
A video going viral on social media claims to show an anti-Taliban group called the Liberation Front of Afghanistan vowing to avenge India for the Pahalgam terror attack. The video shows four armed men in military gear and balaclavas delivering a statement, threatening vengeance against Pakistan-backed terror groups. The video begins with audio in a foreign language, followed by English. A portion of the English audio says: 'We are the Liberation Front of Afghanistan. And today, we speak not in whispers but in war cries. Pahalgam bleeds in our memory. We remember the laughter of children silenced by foreign hands. ISI's puppets dared to spill innocent blood. They lit a fire they cannot control. You ask why we now walk with a foreign intelligence agency. Because vengeance has no borders.'advertisement
In the latter part of the video, the front members allegedly vowed to take revenge for the Pahalgam terror attack.A Facebook user shared this video with the caption: 'The Liberation Front of Afghanistan has officially warned: 'Pahalgam has not yet been avenged. We will not stop until every ISI-sponsored resistance fighter in Pakistan or elsewhere is hunted and eliminated.'' Its archive can be viewed here. The news outlet NewsX also presented this video as recent news.India Today Fact Check found that this video is old and edited. The original dates back to 2022, when an anti-Taliban military front issued a statement highlighting the wrongdoings of the Taliban regime. It has nothing to do with India, and predates the Pahalgam attack by years.OUR PROBEA quick reverse search of the video's keyframes led us to multiple Persian-language social media posts from 2022. This version of the video did not have English audio or subtitles, unlike the viral video. These Persian-language posts said, 'Another military front against the Taliban, named the 'Afghanistan Liberation Front', announced its existence. In a video recording, this front stated that the women of this land do not enjoy any Islamic or human rights. They speak of standing firm against the Taliban.'Many news outlets had reported on this video at the time as well. According to the Arabic outlet Al Ain News, the Taliban's actions, like arresting journalists and oppressing women, led to the formation of the Afghanistan Liberation Front. The report also stated this group had no connection to the National Resistance Front led by Ahmad Massoud. We generated English subtitles of the original Persian-language video using the translation bot Translate Mom on X. It can be seen below. According to these subtitles, the speech mentioned the Taliban and its atrocities. It did not refer to India at all. We shared the subtitles we generated with Mujahid Andarabi, the editor of Radio Afghanistan International. He confirmed that the translation was mostly accurate. He also said that to his knowledge, neither the Afghanistan Liberation Front nor any other anti-Taliban group had recently issued any statement referring to the Pahalgam terror attack. Thus, it's clear that an old video issued by an anti-Taliban front is being shared with fake English audio that links it to the Pahalgam terror attack.- Ends

Even a person murdering someone would not inflict such violence, says CPI(M) leader

Even a person intending to murder someone would not inflict such violence, said Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary P. Shanmugam on Sunday. Speaking at a protest organised at Thirupuvanam here to demand justice for custodial death victim B. Ajith Kumar, he said that when hundreds of gold theft cases happened in Tamil Nadu every day, why unleash violence on a youth who was just suspected of stealing jewels. 'If this has raised doubts, then the IAS officer under question, who is said to have ordered the inquiry, should be brought under law.' Questioning why the DMK government did not take action against the police officials responsible for the killing of 13 anti-Sterlite protesters even after three years, he said Justice Aruna Jegadeesan Commission report was sitting idle without any action. Under the guise of a special team, all senior police officials were having goons under their control, he charged. In order to ensure fair justice to the victim's family, and to prevent distortion of evidence, it should be ensured that the arrested police personnel be kept in prison till the judgment day. 'As eyewitnesses and other evidence are crucial in this case, the State government should protect them from getting tampered with,' Mr. Shanmugam added.

"Distressing": Ashish Shelar compares Pahalgam terror attack to Marathi-Hindi row

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 6 (ANI): Amid the political sparring over Hindi imposition charge by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar on Sunday compared the agony of the Pahalgam terror attack, where Hindus were killed in the name of religion, and those getting 'beaten up' in the name of language. He said that these incidents were distressing for him. 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here, they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create a disturbance,' Shelar said. His remarks come after some incidents of violence and vandalism were reported in the state amid the ongoing Hindi-Marathi controversy. Five workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested in connection with the vandalism at entrepreneur Sushil Kedia's office in Worli, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against them under Sections 223, 189(2), 189(3), 190, 191(2), 191(3), and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Kedia, who found himself in the middle of the language row in Maharashtra over his recent remarks against MNS and its chief Raj Thackeray, stated that he made these comments in haste and has now realised his mistake. In another incident, as per a viral video, a group of men allegedly associated with a regional party beat up a shop owner for not speaking in Marathi. The incident occurred in the Mira-Bhayandar area near Mumbai. On Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned of strict legal action against those engaging in 'hooliganism' in the name of Marathi. He said that the Mahayuti government will not tolerate violence against commoners. Although the Maharashtra government withdrew its April 16 orders on the implementation of the three-language policy that made Hindi a 'mandatory' third language for school students in Classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools, the political controversy over the same has brought together long-time estranged Thackeray cousins after nearly two decades. Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday shared the stage together at the Worli Dome in Mumbai as they held a joint rally in protest against the 'Hindi imposition'. UP CM Yogi Adityanath assures fee waiver to Class 7 girl, RSS-run school refuses: ‘No such provision'

After a Class 7 student appealed to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath for a fee waiver, he assured her support — paving the way for her dream of becoming an IAS officer. UP CM Adityanath had assured the girl that she would not face obstacles in her education.(PTI) 'Either your fees will be waived, or we will arrange the amount,' Adityanath told the student, news agency PTI reported. However, despite the chief minister's assurance that the girl would face no obstacles in her education, the school management refused to pardon her fees, according to an NDTV report. The school is run by RSS's education wing Vidya Bharati, and charges a monthly fee of ₹1,650 for Class 7, reported NDTV. Pankhuri has outstanding dues of about ₹18,000. The student, Pankhuri Tripathi, said the school told her that there was no such provision. "I had gone to the chief minister with a fee pardon request. He gave me a chocolate and assured me that it would be done. But when I went to school with my father, they misbehaved with us," Pankhuri said. She added that the school management had told them that if more people asked for such waivers, the institution would not be able to function. 'They said they have to pay teachers,' Pankuri said, as per NDTV. Pankhuri's father, Rajiv Kumar Tripathi, had suffered a leg injury, following which he lost his job. 'When I was at home during the pandemic, I slipped off the terrace and suffered a leg injury. I lost my job,' Rajiv said. He said both his children study in English-medium schools, with his son currently in Class 12. Pankhuri was not able to attend school after February given the family's difficulty in paying the fees. 'It is my son's last year in school, so I did not want to disrupt his education. I thought of taking my daughter out of school for a year,' NDTV quoted Rajiv as saying. However, Rajiv then had the idea of attending the CM's Janata Durbar on July 1, during which Adityanath directed officials to ensure that Pankhuri's education is not affected. However, when Rajiv took his daughter to the school, the management 'misbehaved' with them, saying there was no such provision for a pardon. 'Truth behind BJP's slogan': Akhilesh Yadav's jibe at UP CM Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at the BJP and CM Adityanath, saying this was the 'truth behind BJP's slogan'. 'Those who are busy hoarding, how will they waive or pay someone's fees?,' Yadav said in a post on X. The SP chief also promised that Pankhuri's education would not stop. 'This is the truth of the BJP's fake slogans of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. We urge the BJP not to lie to children,' he said. However, Pankhuri's family has rested their hopes on the UP CM, with Rajiv Tripathi saying, '…We are associated with the Math and Maharaj ji (Yogi Adityanath) and we believe he will ensure my daughter's education.'
