) on Tuesday achieved a construction milestone with the completion of the underground tunnel between Tughlakabad and Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor which is part of the Phase IV expansion.
The 23.622-km Tughlakabad to Aerocity corridor is the new Golden Line that will have 15 stations.
A tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station after ploughing through a 0.792-km tunnel. The tunnel breakthrough was achieved using a mammoth 91-metre-long boring machine. Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement are being dug on this stretch as part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor.
The civil contractor that implemented this project is M/s Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

This tunnel was constructed at an average depth of approximately 18 metres. About 559 rings were installed in the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres.
"The tunnel was built using the proven technology — Earth Pressure Balancing Method — with a concrete lining made of precast tunnel rings. These tunnel rings were cast at a fully mechanised casting yard set up in Mundka.

The concrete segments were cured with a steam curing system to achieve early strength," said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporate communications at DMRC.
He added that all necessary precautions were taken during the tunnel construction below the existing built-up structures. Ground movement was monitored with highly sensitive instruments fixed to nearby structures, ensuring that there was no settlement anywhere, Dayal said.
As part of the Phase IV work approved so far, 40.1km of underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor has underground sections totalling 19.3km.
A tunnel boring machine is used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata. These can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand. The machines have revolutionised tunnelling work worldwide, enabling tunnels to be bored without disturbing buildings and other surface structures.
The boring machines are particularly useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas. DMRC has been using these for its tunnelling work since Phase 1. In Phase 3, when approximately 50km of underground sections were built, about 30 such machines were deployed.

The U.S. has said it's working with allies to put pressure on Russian oligarchs, some of whom are close to Putin and have had their superyachts seized, to try to compel him to stop the war. The 348-foot-long (106-meter-long) yacht, seized three years ago and currently docked in San Diego, was custom built by the German company Lürssen in 2017. Designed by François Zuretti, the yacht features an interior with extensive marble work, eight state rooms, a beauty salon, a spa, a gym, a helipad, a swimming pool and an elevator. It accommodates 16 guests and 36 crew members. Determining the real ownership of the Amadea has been an issue of contention because of an opaque trail of trusts and shell companies. The superyacht is registered in the Cayman Islands and is owned by Millemarin Investments Ltd., also based in the Cayman Islands. The U.S. contends that Suleiman Kerimov, an economist and former Russian politician, who was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for alleged money laundering, owns the yacht. Meanwhile, Eduard Khudainatov, a former chairman and chief executive of the state-controlled Russian oil and gas company Rosneft, who has not been sanctioned, claims to own it. U.S. prosecutors say Khudainatov is a straw owner of the yacht, intended to conceal the yacht's true owner, Kerimov. Litigation over the true ownership of the yacht is ongoing. A representative of Khudainatov said in an emailed statement Wednesday that the planned sale of the yacht is 'improper and premature' since Khudainatov is appealing a forfeiture ruling. 'We doubt it will attract any rational buyer at fair market price, because ownership can, and will, be challenged in courts outside the United States, exposing purchasers to years of costly, uncertain litigation,' said the representative, Adam Ford. The yacht has been virtually untouched since the National Maritime Services took custody of it in 2022. To submit a sealed bid on it, bidders must put in a 10 million euro deposit, the equivalent of roughly $11.6 million, to be considered. Ford said Khudainatov would go after any proceeds from the sale of the yacht, estimated to be worth $325 million. 'Should the government press ahead simply to staunch the mounting costs it is imposing on the American taxpayer, we will pursue the sale proceeds, and any shortfall from fair market value, once we prevail in court," Ford said. A U.S. aid package for Ukraine signed into law in May 2024 gave the U.S. the ability to seize Russian state assets located in the U.S. and use them for the benefit of Kyiv, which was attacked by Russia in February 2022.

The March earthquake in Myanmar figured among the major natural disasters in the first six months of the year, with the tremors felt in neighbouring Thailand, India, and China. In Thailand alone, insured losses reached $1.5 billion. Overall, while natural disasters caused $135 billion in economic losses in the first half of 2025, man-made disasters -- which include industrial accidents -- caused another $8 billion in losses, of which $7 billion were insured losses.
