The MLS All-Stars secured a convincing 3–1 win over the Liga MX All-Stars in Wednesday night's All-Star Game at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, continuing their dominance in the midseason showdown between North America's top leagues.Despite the absence of Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, both of whom were voted into the squad but sat out due to Inter Miami 's grueling recent schedule, the MLS squad, led by Austin FC manager Nico Estevez , controlled the tempo throughout.Nashville striker Sam Surridge opened the scoring in the 28th minute, heading in a pinpoint cross from Denis Bouanga. Surridge, who now has 18 goals this season, remains tied with Messi atop the MLS scoring chart.Philadelphia Union's Tai Baribo added a second in the 51st minute, finishing a clinical pass from Diego Rossi with a low strike into the corner.Tijuana's 16-year-old prodigy Gilberto Mora gave Liga MX a glimmer of hope with a 64th-minute goal, showcasing the flair that made him a standout at this year's Gold Cup. But Vancouver's Brian White sealed the victory with an 80th-minute tap-in to restore the two-goal cushion.FC Cincinnati's Evander captained the MLS squad, while veteran defender Sergio Ramos wore the armband for Liga MX. This was the fourth meeting between the leagues in the All-Star format, with MLS now holding a 3–1 series edge after Liga MX's lone win in 2023.Since its inception in 1996, the MLS All-Star Game has grown into a fan-favorite event, offering a unique showcase of soccer talent each year. Unlike traditional league play, the All-Star format sees top Major League Soccer (MLS) players take on international clubs or, more recently, rivals from other leagues. This year's edition, set for July 23, features the MLS All-Stars facing off against Liga MX All-Stars - marking the fourth time the two leagues have met in this format. Of the 30 players selected for MLS, 14 hail from outside the US, Canada, and Mexico, highlighting the league's global diversity. As MLS celebrates its 30th season, this will be the 29th All-Star Game (the 2020 edition was canceled). MLS holds a 2–1 advantage in the series against Liga MX, though the Mexican league earned a convincing 4-1 win last year.

Lionel Messi 'Very Upset' After Being Penalised By MLS: "Draconian..."
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has revealed Lionel Messi is 'very upset' after being given a one-game ban for missing out on the Major league Soccer (MLS) All-Star game, a punishment which he believes is 'draconian.' Messi and Jordi Alba will miss the game against MLS Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati on Sunday (IST) as MLS rules state that any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in his club's next match. "Lionel Messi is very upset, like we all are in the club, with the fact that they won't be able to play tomorrow night. But I think what we have to do as a club is to get together as one, have an attitude that is us against the world," Mas said at a news conference. Mas had also confirmed that the decision to rest the two players was made by the club given they had played nine games in a span of just 36 days and the heavily congested schedule with Concacaf Champions League, MLS regular season and FIFA Club World Cup duties having been carried out. "I think that the punishment for the rule is frankly draconian. Obviously, it was not a positive reaction [from Messi and Alba]. They want to compete, they want to play games. That's what they're here for, to play and win. They understand the magnitude of tomorrow's night's game. "So no, their reaction was exactly as expected of two competitive players who don't understand the decision, who don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension,' he added. Inter Miami currently sit at fifth place in the Eastern Conference and are seven points behind leaders Cincinnati, making it a very high stakes clash when the two teams meet on Sunday (IST).

And that's a big deal because it is a partnership with ownership. It's a partnership with the league, and we're on the short term of that revenue.' He elaborated, "Those (contract) numbers sound crazy, but what the league is doing, from whatever era you want to compare it to, to now, is probably 10x that. The idea that we can't participate in equity while we're playing is part of why I would say yes, we are underpaid, because we want to be able to participate in that rise.' "Hopefully, sooner than later, those rules change a little bit so that players can participate more in the upside of team equity, the league, valuations, and all that type of stuff.
