Google's new and improved Ask Photos is back on track — and rolling out now!
TL;DR Ask Photos is a Google Photos feature designed to answer questions about the contents of your photo library.
While announced at Google I/O 2024, access over the past year has been extremely limited.
Earlier this month we heard the rollout was paused while Google worked to address a few issues, but today it's back on track.
Over the past couple years, AI has been changing the way we do lots of things, and while there is absolutely no shortage of controversial uses of the tech, there are also some places where employing it just makes all the sense in the world. Back at I/O 2024, Google announced one of those really clever-sounding use cases, with Ask Photos for Google Photos promising to make your gigantic archive of pics actually useful by letting you search through it using natural language. After a very bumpy year, it finally sounds like Ask Photos is now ready to live up to its potential.
Following that introduction, we caught an early look at Ask Photos last summer, but even by the time fall rolled around access was still extremely limited, with Google only testing Ask Photos with a small group of users.
By 2025, it was starting to become clear that something was wrong, and earlier this month, Google Photos Product Manager Jamie Aspinall confirmed that the rollout of Ask Photos has been paused. Aspinall was surprisingly candid about the struggles the service faced, admitting failures 'in terms of latency, quality and ux.' While that was unfortunate to hear, he also teased that a much-improved iteration of Ask Photos was just around the corner.
While Aspinall predicted we'd see Ask Photos make its return in about two weeks, it's been just over three now, and today Google confirms that Ask Photos is back on track.
As of now, access is expanding beyond those early testers, and Google says that 'more' eligible Photos users in the US should be getting access. That suggest to us that Google's still being a little cautious with deployment, but hopefully everyone who's interested gets a chance to try it soon.
To be eligible to use Ask Photos you need to be an English-speaking user in the US who has Face Groups toggled on.
We also hear about some new functionality, and it sounds like Google cooked this up specifically to address some of the speed concerns we'd seen expressed about Ask Photos earlier. The app's basically combining classic search with this Gemini-powered upgrade to initially surface some broadly relevant results, while Gemini continues to crunch your query in the background. That means you get to see at least some pics straight away, rather than feeling like you're waiting forever on Ask Photos.
Once you're able to give it a try for yourself, let us know in the comments if this was worth waiting for.

Pixel Buds 2a — 4 things I want to see from Google's new budget buds
It's almost time for Google's 2025 event, when we see what the last chunk of the year has in store for Pixel devices. There's going to be phones, AI updates and loads more — but I'm most interested in Google's next pair of in-ear buds. The Google Pixel Buds 2a are pegged for an announcement at the show, and I'm hoping for some big improvements. Unfortunately, rumors and rumblings are slim, so instead this is a list of things that I want — and the list is long. So, from never-before-seen features on budget Google Buds to important updates to specs we've already got, here are the four most important things that I'd like to see in the Google Pixel Buds 2a. The first Pixel Buds A didn't feature any kind of ANC, but it would be nice to see some form of noise canceling in Google's more approachably-priced product. There's precedent in the space to expect it as well, rather than just pie-in-the-sky thinking: Sony's excellent WF-C710N feature some truly epic noise canceling for the price, so it would be nice to see something from Google. It doesn't have to be incredible noise canceling, just enough to make your commute a little more tolerable when the world gets noisy. It doesn't have to be incredible noise canceling, mind you, just enough to make your commute a little more tolerable when the world gets noisy. That would give them the leg up on the AirPods 4 without ANC — they currently cost $129, so should the Google Buds coming in at a lower price with more features, they'll have an easy fight on their hands. For the record, Google's buds don't sound bad. However, neither model quite matches up to the competition with some sonic trip-ups in soundstage and bass. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'd like to see the Pixel Buds 2a buck the trend with some better sound, so that they can stand up to the Sony and Apple earbuds at a similar price. Competition at this price is very strong, so some form of audio upgrade is going to be important to stand out amongst the crowd. Perhaps even some form of spatial audio like that found on Apple's cheapest option could work... Either way, I'd like to see some form of better sound quality in the Buds 2a. The battery life of the Pixel Buds A series is okay when you compare it to that found in Apple's cheapest AirPods, but it falls down when stacked up against other similarly priced options. The WF-C710N, for example, offer you 7.5 hours of battery life, and they have ANC. At the moment, you only get 5 hours of battery in the buds themselves, and then 24 hours in the charging case. That's fine, but more is always nice to have. A boost in both the buds and the case would be most appreciated in the Pixel Buds 2a. I'm not asking for loads of extra hours out of either part of the package, but something extra would be very appreciated. That would be another big step up over its predecessors and key rivals. One of the biggest problems I experienced with the Pixel Buds A was their volume — they were way too quiet. Whether connected to a TV, a phone or a tablet, they simply weren't all that loud. In quieter environments, it wasn't as much of a problem, but it became far more annoying when I had to take a call. While overall call quality was pretty good, the volume of our call partner was never quite enough. Some form of volume boost out of the Buds 2a would be most welcome indeed. UAE's Renewables Champion Shifts Hydrogen Billions to Data Boom
Abu Dhabi's main renewables company has diverted billions of dollars of investment intended for green hydrogen toward powering the emirate's AI push, reflecting how a lack of buyers for a fuel once seen as key for the energy transition is forcing firms to reassess plans. Global demand for clean hydrogen products has fallen short of expectations while power needs from data centers have been surging, prompting Masdar to adjust course, Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said in an interview.
