Sweltering heat continues across wide regions of Japan

Japanese authorities are urging extra precautions against heatstroke as daytime highs may hit nearly 40 degrees Celsius on Monday in some inland areas of the Kanto and Tokai regions. The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system covering wide regions of the country is driving up temperatures. By 11:30 a.m., the mercury had risen to 37.3 degrees in Ome City in Tokyo, 36.9 degrees in Ebina City in Kanagawa Prefecture, 36.4 degrees in Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture, 36.1 degrees in central Tokyo and 35.1 degrees in Nagoya. Daytime highs of 39 degrees are forecast for Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture and Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture, Nagoya, and Gifu, and 38 degrees for Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture. Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 23 of the country's 47 prefectures, from the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo, to the Kyushu region. Officials are advising people to keep cool by using air conditioners, consuming adequate fluids and salt. Atmospheric conditions are likely to become extremely unstable in Kanto-Koshin, and in western Japan and elsewhere due partly to rising temperatures and damp air. Localized downpours with thunder are possible. Caution is advised for flooding in low-lying areas, landslides and swollen rivers. People are asked to be on the alert for lightning strikes, gusty winds, including tornadoes, and hail. In the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa, a tropical depression south-southeast of Miyakojima Island is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Monday night. The storm may approach the Sakishima Islands and Okinawa's main island through Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. People are asked to keep updated with the latest weather information.

Scorching heat expected across Japan on Sunday

Weather officials are warning of another scorching day across most of Japan on Sunday. The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system will cover areas from the Kyushu region in the southwest to Tohoku in the northeast, causing temperatures to rise. The mercury is forecast to reach 38 degrees Celsius in Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture and Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture; 37 degrees in Gifu, Toyama and Yamaguchi cities; and 35 degrees in central Tokyo and Osaka City. Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 26 of Japan's 47 prefectures. Meanwhile, a front stretching from a low-pressure system will pass through areas near Hokkaido, causing rain clouds to develop. Hokkaido and Tohoku could receive up to 50 millimeters of rain with thunder in an hour. Weather officials warn of mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, tornadoes and other gusty winds, thunder strikes, and hail.

Heatwave in Gaza worsens living conditions for displaced residents

A heatwave that has engulfed the Gaza Strip has made living conditions for displaced people staying in makeshift shelters even harder. Thousands of Gazans have been forced to live in tents without electricity or water after losing their homes in Israeli attacks. The United Nations says about 90 percent of the residential buildings in Gaza have been damaged. The UN says Gaza is currently experiencing temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. A UN agency warned on Thursday that cases of dehydration are rising throughout the region due to shortages of drinking water. A reporter from NHK's local office says displaced residents in the town of Al-Zawaida are spraying water on children's bodies to prevent heatstroke while others are using batteries to run secondhand electric fans. A woman said they had no choice but to get used to such living conditions. Cases of starvation are also rising despite recent measures by the Israeli military to increase aid supply deliveries into Gaza. Local health authorities reported 251 malnutrition-related deaths as of Saturday. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says humanitarian conditions remain largely unchanged in Gaza. It called on the Israeli side to allow more aid to reach people.
