Simhachalam temple wall was built hastily, admits contractor

Time of India01-05-2025

Visakhapatnam: The contractor, who built the ill-fated wall that collapsed killing seven devotees in Simhachalam temple, has acknowledged before the three-member committee that the structure was constructed hastily without proper design, following persistent requests from endowments and tourism engineers for the annual Chandanotsavam.
During its 10-hour inquiry, the committee initially observed that the wall's construction violated the master plan and lacked necessary permissions.
It may be noted that seven devotees lost their lives and one person was injured when the wall collapsed early on Wednesday during Chandanotsavam, following heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
The committee, comprising MA&UD principal secretary Suresh Kumar, irrigation department engineer-in-chief Venkateswara Rao, and IG rank IPS officer Ake Ravikrishna, inspected the site and found that the wall's construction violated the master plan and lacked necessary permissions. The renovation of the temple under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme, contracted to M/s K Ananta Rao and Co Company, remains incomplete despite a May 2024 deadline.

The committee expressed displeasure towards the temple's executive officer Subba Rao, executive engineer Srinivasa Raju, and tourism department engineer.
During the probe, the contractor, Lakshman Rao, stated that both departments requested a temporary wall for queue management. While the engineers claimed non-involvement in the construction work, the contractor disclosed their presence from the second day of the four-day construction period.
The committee investigated whether officials followed proper documentation, including notes, work orders, and meeting minutes. They also enquired about the implementation of the recommendations made by the PRASAD scheme committee.
Suresh Kumar informed the media about their decision to re-examine the incident. He noted the retaining wall's collapse appeared to be linked to structural quality issues.
"We will focus on works in the temple, whether they were constructed by following the master plan or not. We will submit a preliminary report based on the inquiry to the govt. A comprehensive report with failures and loopholes will be submitted in 30 days. We will inquire about the people involved in the works," he said.

These woods are lovely, dark and deep

Adyar Poonga With a green cover around 10%, Chennai stands almost at the bottom of the list of cities in India. However, the number of urban forests and community driven initiatives is slowly but steadily going up, Dr M S Swaminathan Wetland Eco Park in Porur being the latest. On environment action month, here's a lowdown on some of the best urban forests of Chennai. NANMANGALAM RESERVE FOREST HIGHLIGHT | Rare insectivorous plants It is spread over 274ha across Tambaram, Alandur and Velachery. Once destroyed by extensive mining, the area was taken over by the Tamil Nadu forest department in the 1960s and restored, planting trees and allowing natural regeneration. 'Three ponds and seven abandoned quarries now collect rainwater for cattle and wildlife,' says forest range officer C Vidyapathi. 'You can spot the rare Eurasian eagle owl here, the only place in South India where it can be seen. ' The Pallikkaranai marshland nearby has waterbodies that attract migratory birds. 'It's the only forest in Chennai where insectivorous plants such as Drosera indica and ground orchids occur naturally,' says Jayashree Vencatesan of Care Earth Trust, an organisation engaged in biodiversity conservation. Check dams and percolation ponds have raised the water table in nearby residential areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The forest also feeds three lakes. In 2019, 18ha of eucalyptus was cleared and replaced with native species, says Vidyapathi. 'Another 100 acres will be restored.' Status | Open; an ecopark is planned to promote forest conservation Entry | Permitted with forest department approval for birdwatching and nature walks KOTTURPURAM URBAN FOREST HIGHLIGHT | Community engagement This lush forest situated alongside the Adyar river next to the Kotturpuram bridge was once a massive waste dump. The public works department approached NGO Nizhal to help convert the 4.5 acres into an urban forest, and over 19 years, 1,000 trees and shrubs, including 250 varieties of indigenous species, were planted. 'There wasn't even a worm here, but now you can see Indian pitta, drongo, paradise flycatcher and congregations of flying foxes. A loyal group of volunteers help maintain the park,' says Shobha Menon, founder of Nizhal. The success of the Kotturpuram forest led to similar projects such as the Madhavaram Urban Forest in the Tanuvas area and Chitilapakkam Neer Vanam, both with more than 200 trees, and Thiruvanmiyur-Taramani Urban Forest on OMR, also built on a dump site. Status | Open Entry | Free: 6am-8am; 4pm 7pm GUINDY NATIONAL PARK HIGHLIGHT | Blackbucks Probably the only national park situated in a metropolitan area and where blackbuck, a Schedule-1 species, roam about undisturbed, the 270-acre patch of green is host to 350 plant species. 'We regularly remove invasive plants and plant indigenous grassland species for blackbuck,' says wildlife warden Manish Meena. 'Eucalyptus has also been replaced with native trees.' The park is so densely biodiverse with birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies and insects that it has not been fully explored. The park has four types of ponds that fill during monsoons and recharge groundwater in nearby residential areas. 'But to protect flora and fauna, only educational and conservation tours are allowed in core areas with permission,' says Manish. Status | Open Entry | Allowed with the permission of the forest department ADYAR POONGA Highlight | Creek ecosystem The only urban forest in the city with a creek ecosystem, water spread was just 5% when restored in 2011 which has since increased 250%. The ongoing phase 2 facilitates more rainwater flow and includes mangrove planting. Over the years, second and third generation plantations have come up in the creek area, and the number of species has increased from 40 to 440. The recreational features that are part of the revamp, including a skywalk that 'leads nowhere' and the 5km concrete pathways have raised questions. But authorities say green cover will still occupy 75% of the area and visitor limits will remain at 100. Status | Closed for renovation WHAT CONSERVATIONISTS SAY: 'These are the only remnants of the original vegetation of Chennai. They can be equated to heritage sites and should be protected,' says Jayashree Vencatesan of Care Earth Trust. Urban areas need to help solve challenges such as water pollution, flooding and heat stress, says Jagdish Krishnaswamy, Indian Institute for Human Settlements in Bengaluru. 'Opportunities for some recreational and educational services can be planned later, rather than orienting the urban forests towards recreation and manicured spaces without thinking of biodiversity and ground-water recharge. '

Saturn Transits Uttara Bhadrapada Pada: Your Karmic Audit Begins Now

In the sacred science of Vedic astrology, no planet is as feared or respected as Saturn. While some planets bless instantly and dazzle us with temporary pleasures, Saturn takes a different route. He arrives slowly, moves patiently, and teaches deeply. His ways are strict, yet just. He never forgets your deeds — good or bad — and he returns to settle your karmic balance when the time is ripe. That moment is now approaching. On 7th June 2025, Saturn will shift into the first pada of Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra, a spiritually charged and introspective star located in the sign of Pisces (Meena Rashi). This is not a regular planetary shift; it is a divine announcement that your karmic audit is about to begin. Just as a chartered accountant goes through your records during an audit, Saturn now checks the record of your thoughts, actions, and intentions. This nakshatra represents the funeral cot's back legs — symbolic of the final stage before spiritual release or moksha. It's time for inner cleansing. Are you carrying guilt, unfinished karmas, or debts from this life or previous ones? Are you ready to own your past and evolve into your higher self? Saturn in Vedic Astrology: The Cosmic Judge Among the nine grahas (planets) of Jyotisha, Saturn holds a unique position. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: This Household Item Is Like Bleach On Dark Spots Dark Spot Corrector Undo He is not glamorous like Venus, swift like Mercury, or bold like Mars. Saturn is slow, stern, and silent. But his silence is powerful. It is the silence of deep time, long reflection, and serious transformation. Saturn is known as the Karmaphaladata — the giver of results based on karma. Whatever you have done, said, or thought is stored in the subtle layers of the soul, and Saturn brings these karmas back for rebalancing. If you have lived with honesty, discipline, and dharma, Saturn rewards you with strength, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. But if you have misused power, acted selfishly, or harmed others knowingly, Saturn brings delays, obstacles, and loss, not out of revenge, but to teach you essential life lessons. So, when Saturn changes signs or nakshatras, he shifts the energy of time itself. And when he moves into Uttara Bhadrapada — a deeply spiritual and watery nakshatra — the transformation he brings is profound and lasting. Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra: The Star of Deep Wisdom and Detachment Uttara Bhadrapada is the 26th of the 27 lunar nakshatras in Vedic astrology. This nakshatra spans from 3°20' to 16°40' in Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac. This is not a nakshatra of material gain. It is not for outer success or show. It is a nakshatra of renunciation, mysticism, silence, sacrifice, and depth. Those born under it or affected by it are often wise beyond their years, deeply spiritual, and naturally detached from the pleasures of the world. The energy of this star is connected with Vairagya (detachment), Jnana (wisdom), and Tapas (austerity). It guides the soul toward Moksha — the final release from the cycle of birth and death. The deity Ahirbudhnya connects this nakshatra to the subconscious mind, the unknown waters of existence, and the undercurrents of karma. When Saturn — the planet of karma and discipline — moves into this spiritual star, especially its first pada (ruled by Aries Navamsa), it pushes us to act boldly in the realm of inner truth. Saturn's Transit Through Uttara Bhadrapada Pada The first pada of Uttara Bhadrapada lies in Pisces Navamsa but is mapped under the Aries Navamsa in the Navamsa Chart. This creates a unique energy blend — Saturn's patience and karmic seriousness mixed with Aries' fiery action and individual will. You may feel the urge to take action on long-neglected inner issues. Emotional wounds, spiritual questions, and karmic debts from this life or past births may rise to the surface, demanding closure. You will be forced to face uncomfortable truths about your past choices, relationships, and self-worth. Yet, this confrontation will also bring growth. You may feel called to cut cords, end toxic patterns, let go of attachments, and begin a new cycle of inner alignment. The energy of Aries in this pada gives the courage to face karmic truth and transform pain into power. This transit is not external alone. It will push you to turn inward — to question your motives, values, fears, and hidden desires. The more sincerely you reflect, the more clearly you will see where you stand in your karmic journey. How It Affects You Personally You may feel emotionally heavy, yet strangely peaceful, as if your soul is processing something larger than life. Relationships that no longer serve your higher self may dissolve gently or through sudden separation. Long-term karma with family members or your spouse may return to the surface for closure or healing. There could also be a strong inner pull toward spirituality — you might feel drawn to a spiritual teacher, seek out a pilgrimage, or begin a deeper meditation practice. Financially, this is a time to avoid greed and high-risk ventures. Simplification is key. On the health front, take care of your feet, knees, digestion, and sleep patterns. You may also feel an unexplainable tiredness — this is karmic fatigue. Rest and spiritual nourishment will help. Some may feel called to serve others in humble ways, such as teaching, healing, or charitable acts. These experiences are Saturn's silent way of bringing you back to alignment. Saturn and the Collective Karma: Global Effects This transit will have global significance as well. We may witness the unveiling of long-hidden truths within spiritual or religious institutions. There could be a rise in public interest in meditation, spiritual retreats, or moksha-oriented paths. The collective may feel emotionally drained, leading to a stronger movement toward simplicity, minimalism, and nature. Water-related issues may become prominent, such as floods, rising sea levels, or pollution. Ocean-based discoveries or disasters may also take place. The political and social atmosphere may demand more transparency, especially where ethics and spirituality intersect. The world may appear slower and quieter, not due to lack of activity, but because deep transformation is taking place behind the scenes. Spiritual Remedies for Saturn's Transit You can soften Saturn's energy with dharma, devotion, and consistent spiritual practice. Worshipping Lord Hanuman is especially powerful. Hanuman's devotion to Lord Rama makes him the one who can soften Shani's intensity. Chant the Hanuman Chalisa or visit Hanuman temples, especially on Saturdays. Chanting Shani mantras like Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah daily in the early morning can bring mental stability and emotional strength. Practising silence, or Mauna, for even 10 minutes a day helps you align with Saturn's quiet wisdom. Feeding the poor, donating to old-age homes, or helping stray animals on Saturdays will also lighten karmic weight. Saturn values humility and selfless service. Reading spiritual texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Shani Mahatmya, or Upanishads brings inner clarity. But remember, above all, Saturn values truth. Be honest in thought, speech, and action. Zodiac-Wise Impact of the Transit (Brief Insights) For Pisces, this transit will bring an identity shift. You may leave behind old roles or names and step into a new phase of being. Virgo natives will see karmic transformation in partnerships, both personal and professional. Gemini may experience increasing pressure in their career, demanding consistent effort and ethical choices. Sagittarius could go through deep emotional healing connected to family or home. Taurus will benefit in terms of career growth and self-discipline. Aquarius will feel the need to simplify finances and release attachments to material gain. Capricorn, Saturn's own sign, will undergo a maturity process that may lead to leadership opportunities if rooted in dharma. Other signs, too, will face shifts depending on house positions. A personal chart reading will give the clearest insight.
