OpenAI's GPT-5 release raises revenue risk for Indian IT firms

Getty Images OpenAI may have just fired a warning shot at the Indian IT services model with the launch of the latest version of ChatGPT. GPT-5, ChatGPT's strongest coding version yet released last week, could further dent revenues for an already struggling $283 billion Indian software services industry, as clients may push for even lower pricing. With the upgraded version, the adoption of generative artificial intelligence in software development will rise, exposing IT services firms to revenue deflation risks, Kotak Institutional Equities said in a report. 'We believe GenAI can impact revenue growth for Indian IT by 2-3% for a period of 2-3 years on a net basis,' the report said, adding that the same applies for the customer service and business process outsourcing sector as Indian IT services industry, known for hiring software coders in large numbers, is already seeing the adverse impact of the AI-led disruption. Adoption of the technology has boosted productivity by 20-40%, thereby reducing reliance on engineers and shrinking the people-based billing for Indian IT companies. Besides, the tariffs-induced macro slowdown is also now weighing on the companies that reported negative to flat growth in the last two years.'If your business still depends on armies of coders grinding through routine builds, your margins are about to get hammered,' said Phil Fersht, founder and chief executive of technology consultancy firm HFS Research. 'The smart services players will use this tech to slash delivery times, reinvent pricing and ship services like software products.' Also Read: 'GPT-5 feels dumber': Users on OpenAI's newest model Clients, he said, will push for lower rates as AI boosts productivity, and services providers will need 12–18 months to retool delivery models and replace lost headcount-based revenue with higher-value, AI-augmented services. 'In the short term, expect margin compression before revenue growth,' Fersht launching GPT-5, OpenAI said it is 'our best AI system yet'. According to the company, GPT-5 is a significant leap in intelligence over all its previous models when it comes to coding, math, writing, health, visual perception and more said GPT-5 has substantial advances in reasoning, accuracy and improved instruction following, along with a drop in hallucination rates. This will reduce efforts, costs and risks around legacy modernisation for clients' technology infrastructure providing an edge for IT service providers, they said. Software service providers including large companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro are cannibalising their own revenues, as they are hit by a fundamental shift in the pricing model of the industry to outcome-based from employee-based. 'GPT-5 fundamentally lowers the cost structure for enterprise AI by significantly reducing API usage fees,' research firm Gartner said in a separate report.'OpenAI's enhancements — including 65% reduction in hallucination rates, and more transparent uncertainty communications — can reduce compliance risks and make GPT-5 more suitable for enterprise use cases (with the necessary guardrails), it added. Also Read: Is the AI hype justified? OpenAI's GPT-5 will be a potential barometer But not all is doomed. The likes of upgraded GPT versions could accelerate modernisation in the longer-term, aiding IT services firms provide end-to-end services of viable AI-enabled use cases for businesses.'This is the year of advanced models, and GPT-5 is designed to address the needs of developers by reducing hallucinations and simplifying coding through intelligent dynamic routing. While this introduces risks for traditional IT, it also creates new opportunities for innovative AI business use cases,' said Anushree Verma, senior director analyst at also unlocks new enterprise use cases and efficiencies through its improved correctness, steerability and productivity gains. But transformative business value requires thoughtful integration, strong governance and realistic expectations about current limitations, Verma according to Verma, it is important to note that GPT-5 does not achieve artificial general intelligence and is an incremental improvement over previous models. And organisations should remain vigilant and proactive in addressing potential the improvements, its malicious activity support remains similar to GTP-4 and hallucinations continue. 'GPT-5's advanced reasoning, multimodal processing and lower hallucination rates amplify misuse risks, like advanced scam and phishing generation or harmful outputs that risk bypassing restrictions across sessions,' the Gartner report also believes that new opportunities from GenAI adoption will offset revenue deflation in existing volumes over time.'However, we expect a lag in the pickup of new opportunities and for savings in software development to be deployed into these new opportunities, leading to a period of net headwinds,' it said. 'India AI budget falls short of needs'

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads India will need to rethink data accessibility, and pump in more money to achieve its AI aspirations, Stephen Ezell, vice-president of Global Innovation Policy at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) think- tank told ET. Washington DC-based Ezell said that while AI adoption would cause 'churn, shift and change', it also holds the potential to create 2.3 million new jobs in India by 2030 and add about $1.2–1.5 trillion to its India has overcome the historic lack of a concerted national AI strategy and underfunding, through the India AI Mission, it may be too little, he said. 'But its $1.25 billion budget remains only a fraction of the amount that really needs to be invested to achieve the kind of Indian leadership in AI that will come from training AI systems on model data,' he said, while also acknowledging India's strong talent base as the second-largest source of top-level AI talent believes India's continued restrictive data approach acts a major hindrance to its global AI competitiveness and stresses that data access is as important as human capital in building robust AI systems. 'India doesn't realise that data is an asset foundational to developing a competitive AI ecosystem, especially against China,' he said. Amid an onslaught of mass layoffs in the information technology sector that many fear is due to AI, Ezzell said AI's impact will be job-transformative and not job-destructive, provided countries adopt the right policies.'Studies estimate artificial intelligence will impact at least 40% of jobs globally. However, the greater impact of AI will be on tasks performed by an individual, as opposed to that overall job,' Ezell insisted. Instead, AI may end up creating more jobs than now. 'Economists estimate that for every one job the internet has destroyed, it has created 1.2 jobs,' he optimism stands in sharp contrast to rising layoffs in India's tech industry. 'Skill mismatch' and a lack of 'deployment feasibility' have been cited by industry leader TCS as key reasons behind for sloughing off 12,000 employees over FY26. But according to market estimates, thousands of mid-level tech workers across the sector have been let go in recent quarters, often replaced by AI. Industry body Nasscom expects AI and automation-induced job cuts at IT firms over the next several months. 'Technology is value neutral. AI is the most radically transformative tech, at least in the past century, and the economic impact is going to be profound. It should add $20 trillion to the global economy by 2030,' he a close witness to DC policymaking, Ezzell also drew attention to the stark difference between the previous Joe Biden presidential administration and the current Donald Trump-led White House when it comes to AI policy. The erstwhile Biden administration, he said, had taken a more conservative and cautious route that focused more on regulating hypothetical risks.'Policymakers tend to want to regulate against speculative harms, as opposed to trying to address genuine challenges,' he said. The Trump administration, on the other hand, focuses more aggressively on global AI leadership, resulting in pushing for the diffusion of AI technologies developed in the US. Ezzell credited this strategy for giving rise to the National AI Plan, which emphasises on developing a comprehensive 'AI stack' ranging from software, hardware, models, and data for global export. But for India, this shifting stance will be for nought if the US actively intends to gatekeep AI tech, and computing power. While the latest AI Policy calls for exporting the full US AI technology stack—hardware, models, software, applications, and standards—to allied nations willing to join America's AI alliance, it also stresses on denying foreign adversaries access to US compute power as a matter of both geostrategic competition and national security.'On this, the focus is on countries that are foundationally techno-autocracies such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. India is not, and should not be included in this group,' Ezell said.

ED faces 'wall of the dead' as Vadra puts burden on deceased colleagues

NEW DELHI: In its investigations against Robert Vadra , the Enforcement Directorate faces a "Wall of the Dead" with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi 's spouse putting the burden of explaining the issues thrown up by the money laundering probe on his colleagues, who assisted him acquire properties in Delhi-NCR, but have since passed away. These properties are collectively estimated to be worth several hundred crores of rupees at current market prices. Vadra's statement was recorded at the ED headquarters here on April 15 in connection with a 3.5 acres of land deal in Gurgaon and transactions done by his Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd (SLHPL) and Skylight Realty Pvt Ltd (SLRPL). According to the chargesheet, Vadra was asked to explain how his company could have issued a cheque of Rs 7.5 crore (to the seller of the 3.5 acre land) when the bank account had only Rs 1 lakh balance. He responded by saying, "All financial transactions were taken by late Rajesh Khurana. He must have had a financial plan or understanding of how to act on this land and with the vision of late HL Pahwa would have planned the future financially or sale of this land." On all the transactions related to the land deal - its payment, sale deed registration and stamp duty payment - Vadra said the "information of the same must have been by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AI is changing the way you learn a language Talkpal AI Learn More Undo financial matters were handled by late Rajesh Khurana and all decisions related to the same would be handled by late Rajesh Khurana, late HL Pahwa and late Mahesh Nagar". Land possessions of Vadra and Priyanka include 40 acres in Faridabad. The responses struck ED investigators for the resemblance they do to the ones given by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during the money laundering probe related to the National Herald case . Quoting from their statements, ED in its chargesheet against the Gandhis noted that both Sonia and Rahul parried questions related to acquisition of National Herald by Young Indian, in which they together own 76% stake, for a paltry Rs 50 lakh, saying that only the then Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, who passed away more than four years ago, knew the answers. "Robert Vadra has been evasive in his replies and did not provide any answers to the questions posed to him for explaining the transactions entered by SLHPL and SLRPL with OPPL (Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd). However, the documentary evidence collected during the course of investigation clearly establishes that the sale consideration was suppressed, and thus, the misrepresentations were made in the sale deed as well as in the balance sheet of these entities," ED has noted in its chargesheet. In the National Herald money laundering case, in his responses to six of 10 questions put to him, Rahul had said, "Motilal Vora would be aware of the transactions". As per the chargesheet, when Sonia, too, was asked to specify the purpose of floating Young Indian, she told investigating officers that only "Vora would have been aware". She, however, could not produce documents to substantiate her claim, ED alleged in its chargesheet.
