Akhilesh hits out at govt for appointing another acting DGP
1 2 Lucknow: Responding to the appointment of senior IPS officer Rajeev Krishna as the state police chief on Saturday evening, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said that Uttar Pradesh has got yet another acting DGP. Akhilesh has been critical of the BJP govt in the state which has been appointing acting DGPs one after another since May 2022 when the then state police chief Mukul Goel was removed from the post. Since then, govt has appointed four acting DGPs – DS Chauhan, RK Vishwakarma, Vijay Kumar and Prashant Kumar, who passed the baton to Rajeev Krishna on Saturday. It was after Mukul Goel's unceremonious removal from the post of DGP in May 2022 that the UP govt decided to appoint acting DGPs to "bypass" the system in place where names of three eligible IPS officer had to be sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for its stamp on the name of the state police chief. After this, the SP took on the UP govt accusing it of bypassing the Centre in appointment of DGP. It was in 2024 that the state cabinet cleared the draft of 'Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh Selection and Appointment Rules' which provided for appointment of a select committee by the state chaired by a retired judge of the high court to shortlist a DGP from a panel of three names suggested by the state govt. The committee is yet to be constituted. Lashing out at the state govt for appointing an acting DGP, Akhilesh took on the outgoing police chief Prashant Kumar whom he had repeatedly accused of surrendering to political pressures. "Now that the tenure of the outgoing DGP Prashant Kumar has ended, it is time for him to reflect on what he got in return for proving every wrong as right. Instead of an individual, had he shown his commitment towards the Constitution and law of the land, he would have walked out with his head held high," Akhilesh said. "It is now the time to see if the new DGP will be able to deliver justice with an objective and impartial approach or finds himself stuck in the mess that the outgoing state police chief has left behind and falls prey to politicking. Why should the people of Uttar Pradesh bear the brunt of a law-and-order mechanism which has been in shambles only because Lucknow and Delhi do not have good (political) relations," he said. Akhilesh said it was because of the ongoing power tussle within the BJP that UP was not getting a full-fledged DGP for years. "Despite having a double-engine govt, they are unable to strike a consensus and shortlist a DGP in the state, hence one must not expect any wonders at the crime and law and order front from the BJP govt," the SP chief said.

Shah arrives in Kol, to address party workers' rally today
Kolkata: Union home minister Amit Shah, who arrived in Bengal on Saturday night on a two-day visit, held a meeting with the key state functionaries. Shah, who reached at 10.10pm, is expected to address BJP functionaries at a meet on Sunday. Former BJP Bengal president Dilip Ghosh, whose absence was noticed at PM Narendra Modi's Alipurduar rally, is not likely to be present at Sunday's meet. Two days after Modi asked party workers to take up the "big responsibility" of "deciding the future of Bengal", Shah is likely to touch upon issues that will define BJP's campaign in the months to come. In tune with the tempo set by the PM in Alipurduar, Bengal BJP netas have named Shah's Sunday meet as "Vijay Sankalpa Karyakarta Sammelan". "Party workers are enthusiastic and eagerly looking forward to listening to Shah. Bengal is at a crucial juncture as recruitment scams and violence in Malda and Murshidabad have disillusioned people about Trinamool," said Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader Indranil Khan. Shah will begin his day with the inauguration of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Rajarhat. He is scheduled to attend the party functionary's rally at Netaji Indoor Stadium and then visit Swami Vivekananda's residence before leaving Kolkata. While 15,000 karyakartas — including representatives from mandals across the state — have been invited to attend Shah's rally, Ghosh's name is not on the list. Ghosh said: "I don't attend meetings of top leaders unless I am invited. There is a culture in politics to follow top leaders wherever they go. That is not correct. I work with ground-level workers and meet them when they want to meet me." Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, however, said that Ghosh's presence is decided by the party brass in Delhi. "Dilip Ghosh is our party leader and the party will only decide on inviting him," he said.

Uttam demands transparency on ‘Rafale losses'
Hyderabad: Irrigation and civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday demanded full transparency from the Centre regarding the losses suffered during Operation Sindoor and the conflict between India and Pakistan, particularly the reported downing of . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing a media conference at AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Uttam, a former IAF fighter pilot himself, said: "When Rahul Gandhi first raised questions on Rafales being shot down, he was accused of being anti-national. But today, General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has confirmed that Rafale aircraft were brought down." He also cited Air Marshal Bharti, Director General Air Operations, who in the DGMO briefing had said: "Losses are normal in combat. The objectives of the mission have been achieved and all pilots have come home." Uttam emphasised that while the pilots returned safely, "the aircraft have not returned to their bases," highlighting the need for transparency. He criticised the BJP govt for initially denying these losses and launching a campaign against Rahul Gandhi. "Now that the CDS himself has spoken, the govt should stop the denials. We are proud of our armed forces, but transparency strengthens trust and helps us learn from every operation. How did the US President announce the ceasefire before the DGMOs of India and Pakistan? The govt of India has never clearly explained how this happened. " He stressed the need for a serious reassessment of India's defence technology, pointing out that most of the firing during the four-day operation happened from within each country's international borders. "Yet, we lost fighter aircraft. This requires a thorough review of our technological capabilities," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BJP-led govt at the centre should act urgently on the concerns raised by the air force chief about delays in fighter aircraft supply, talent shortages, and the gap between sanctioned and operational squadrons in the armed forces. India's operational fighter squadrons were below the sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. All three armed forces are short of manpower by over 10 percent. Given the live threats on both our borders (China and Pakistan), we should be going beyond the sanctioned strength. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) did not deliver the Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets on time as said by the Air Chief. This can prove to be a serious problem. The entire country and the govt of India must wake up to the reality to strengthen our armed forces considerably," Uttam said. Quoting the Air Chief Marshal directly, Uttam said: "India has fallen behind China in defence technology and production although our training standards remain superior. This is of serious concern and urgent necessary corrective steps should be taken. The best minds are not joining the service in sufficient numbers, especially in operational and R&D wings. The govt should attract top talent." Uttam reaffirmed his pride in the Indian armed forces while urging the govt to ensure they are equipped, supported, and respected with honesty and transparency. The govt must acknowledge what happened, learn lessons, and be accountable. "We salute the for their decisive victory, but we must be prepared for the challenges ahead," he said.
