Pretoria High Court officials suspended amid fraud and corruption probe

The Citizen16-05-2025

Three officials from the Pretoria High Court have been placed on precautionary suspension following allegations of fraud and corruption.
This is according to the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ).
'The three officials, who cannot be named at this time, are suspects in an ongoing investigation by the South African Police Service's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), looking into fraudulent and corrupt activities in the court.
'The OCJ takes a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and corruption, and the officials were therefore placed on precautionary suspension to allow investigations to proceed without being compromised,' the OCJ said in a statement.
News of the suspensions comes days after Chief Justice Mandisa Maya visited the Mthatha High Court in the Eastern Cape, following reports that officials at the court are allegedly involved in a bribery scheme. The scheme reportedly involves soliciting payments from advocates to perform tasks already within the scope of their jobs, including locating missing files, transcriptions, and allocating trial dates.
An internal and criminal investigation by SAPS has also been launched in this regard.
At the time, the OCJ said it had become aware of the allegations in December 2024.
'Subsequently, the OCJ instituted a forensic investigation in line with the organisation's Fraud Prevention and Anti-Corruption Policy while working closely with relevant law enforcement agencies.
'Accordingly, the department took a prudent approach to releasing specific details on its ongoing investigation to the media so as not to jeopardise any future legal processes or further investigations that may ensue.
'The OCJ reiterates that it is dependent on all stakeholders in the fight against fraud and corruption, including the media, to act in a manner that safeguards the integrity of the processing of legitimate complaints,' the office said. – SAnews.gov.za

'We don't want Helen Zille as mayor': Ntsiki Mazwai

Outspoken media personality Ntsiki Mazwai has called for South Africans to reject former DA leader Helen Zille's plans to run for mayor of Joburg. Known for her controversial comments, the Moja Love star has gone as far as to call the 74-year-old a 'white supremacist'. Last week, the woman dubbed 'GodZille' confirmed that she was contemplating the monumental task of 'saving' Johannesburg. In a viral X post, Ntsiki Mazwai appealed to South Africans to reject Helen Zille's Joburg mayoral bid. She said: 'We cannot afford to have Helen Zille as mayor of Joburg. She is 100 million times worse than Cyril Ramaphosa. 'She is a white supremacist, and if you look at the Western Cape, you'll see that black people are abused there. They live in s**t conditions. She wants to bring that to Joburg'. Ntsiki – who has repeatedly called out politicians, particularly from the SA, added: 'She comes from a traumatic past for black people and she is triggering. We don't want her, she can go and retire, it's good'. She added that voting for Helen Zille as Joburg's next mayor would be 'a huge and scary mistake that would negatively impact the black masses' In another comment, Ntsiki agreed with her followers that the current mayor, Dado Morero of the ANC, was not the best option for the city. 'Anyone is better than Dada, guys. Helen is still not the answer', she posted. While Ntsiki Mazwai has rejected Gozille's ambitions, others are supporting it. In a tweet that also went viral, author Khaya Dlanga urged South Africans to give Helen Zille a chance, claiming that she offered a 'real, visible alternative' Anti-Apartheid activist Adam Habib stated that Helen was 'Johannesburg's best hope'. He added: 'Joburg needs water, power, roads, and frankly, governance. No one else has delivered it. Zille can!' Actor Siv Ngesi added, 'Jozi is such a huge mess, even the locals who hate @helenzille know that this would be the best thing for that dump of a place!' Speaking to eNCA, Helen Zille claimed that she had until Friday to officially submit her application to contest her bid as Johannesburg mayor. The DA's selection panel would then pick a suitable candidate from several names, including Zille's. 'Joburg is my hometown. I was born in Hillbrow, which looks very different than what it does today. Joburg was a functional city that I love and believe is the powerhouse of South Africa. Its health and its functionality is make or break for South Africa.' She added: 'If Joburg doesn't succeed, South Africa does not succeed.' KZN murder accused found dead in police van after court appearance

Eduan Terblanche (53), who is accused of murdering his partner Stacey van Heerden (49) at a Mooi River hotel on May 28, was found dead inside a police van yesterday. According to The Witness, Terblanche was being transported from the Mooi River Magistrate's Court to holding cells in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, shortly after his bail application was postponed. He was meant to return to court tomorrow for the continuation of his bail application. However, his family confirmed they were last night informed of his death. Police in Mooi River have now opened an inquest docket to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding his death. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident without naming Terblanche. Netshiunda said police were investigating an incident 'where an inmate, who was being transported from court to the police station, was found dead inside a police van on arrival at the station on Monday'. Terblanche appeared in court yesterday using a crutch and wrapped in a blanket. He was facing charges of murder and defeating or obstructing the course of justice after his partner, Van Heerden, was found dead at the Gleneagles Hotel. According to the charge sheet, Van Heerden was killed, allegedly by Terblanche who then reportedly set fire to the hotel room while she was still inside. Former George police colleagues face corruption charges

Two former police colleagues will appear in the George Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of corruption. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi said the two, aged 39 and 44, were arrested on Tuesday morning by the Hawks' George-based Serious Corruption Investigation team. 'It was reported that a detective constable at the Thembalethu [police station[ in George, who recently resigned, was investigating a case of an alleged assault. 'He allegedly told the suspects to apologise to the complainant and pay an amount of R2,500 to make the case disappear.' However, after the suspects alleged paid the money to the detective, he failed to hand it over to the complainant. Vukubi said thereafter the other police officer, who was also stationed at the Thembalethu police station, became aware of the complaint laid against his colleague with regard to the assault case. 'The detective allegedly intimidated and improperly persuaded the complainant to influence her testimony against his colleague, who is an ex-detective.' Western Cape Hawks provincial head Major-General Makgato welcomed the arrest of the two suspects. Less than a week ago, the same Hawks unit arrested a Knysna municipal employee after an early morning raid at the municipal building. The 41-year-old general assistant was arrested on Wednesday last week for allegedly selling municipal jobs. At the time, Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said the man allegedly received R37,500 between September 2019 and November 2021 from two members of the public in exchange for employment at the Knysna municipality. 'The first victim paid an amount of R30,000 and the second one paid R7,500. 'The victims through the suspect's [alleged] criminal activity suffered a loss in the amount of R37,500 and did not receive employment as promised,' Zinzi said at the time. The Herald
