Council raises more than £15m from property sales
The sites released by Southampton City Council in the last year include a student accommodation block, retail units and warehouses.
More than £15m was raised through private sales and auctions, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The council, which warned in February that it faced bankruptcy, said it needed to manage assets better and had disposed of properties that might carry a future "disbenefit".
The authority currently has a temporary capitalisation direction from the government, allowing it to use the receipts from asset sales to fund revenue costs in its budget.
It said individual sale prices could not be disclosed.
However, one site - a DPD depot in Raunds, Northamptonshire, which was purchased in 2017 - appears to have been sold at a £620,000 loss, according to council documents.
In 2020/21, it was delivering rental income of more than £477,000, papers showed.
Other disposals include a vacant office in Cambridge, where the council surrendered its lease, and two properties in Southampton that were sold at auction.
Labour councillor Sarah Bogle, in charge of Southampton's economic development, said decisions were taken as part of a five-year asset development and disposal programme (ADDP).
She said: "We want to have the right assets and use them much better and manage them a lot better, which I think historically we haven't always done."
ADDP manager Julianna Clark said the council had secured "good" capital receipts, with some above initial estimates.
She said: "These particular assets that we chose are saying it is better for you to cash the capital receipt because in the longer term you could potentially hold it for a disbenefit."

Developer seeks to build 49 new homes in village
A developer has sought permission from a council to build 49 new homes in a village. Stonebond Properties in Chelmsford has submitted plans to Thurrock Council for authorisation to build on land adjacent to The Paddocks, Hillcrest Road, Horndon on the Hill. The 3.8-acre greenbelt site is currently used for equestrian purposes and comprises paddocks, stable blocks. The application involves demolition and then the construction of the 49 homes, 50% of which would be affordable, the developer said. The affordable housing element will be split between 70% affordable rent and 30% intermediate housing, reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The site will have a new access road to cul-de-sacs, a footpath and "substantial green infrastructure and informal play space", the plan said. The exact mix and types of homes will be determined at a later stage, the developer said, but the scheme was expected to provide a "good range of sized units", from one-bedroom starter units to larger family homes. A new north-south pedestrian "green link" across the site will provide connections from Hillcrest Road to Orsett Road via Horndon Recreational Ground. When announcing its public consultation, Stonebond Properties said: "This is the first in what we hope will be a series of engagement and workshop sessions for our site, known as The Paddocks at Hillcrest Road, Horndon on the Hill. "We believe this site presents an exciting opportunity to create a high-quality residential development that respects both the character of the village and its surroundings. "We welcome the chance to collaborate with the residents of Horndon on the Hill to design a bespoke, welcoming development that is proportionate to the village, and that offers pedestrian links to local services and amenities." The company said the scheme will include onsite and offsite ecological enhancements to achieve at least 10% biodiversity net gain. There will also be contributions towards supporting local infrastructure, including education and health facilities; and public transport. Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Museum to have development protection extended
Brixham's town centre museum is to be given a further five years of protection from potential development. The heritage museum was listed as an asset of community value five years ago. The listing, which means residents can bid to take it on if Torbay Council ever decides to dispose of it, expired earlier this year. The council is now set to renew it, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The museum has been operating for 50 years and has been run mainly by volunteers. A decision to re list the museum for another five years is expected to pass through the council's cabinet on 14 July. A report to the committee said the museum "preserves local heritage and supports learning". "It further enhances the cultural tourism offer and enriches visitor experience to Brixham and the bay,' it added.
