Spieth Has High Praise for Scottie Scheffler

Spieth Has High Praise for Scottie Scheffler originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Jordan Spieth didn't hold back when talking about Scottie Scheffler after his final round at the 2025 Open Championship. Following a tough week at Royal Portrush, Spieth was asked about Scheffler's continued dominance and delivered a candid comparison to one of the NBA's most respected stars.
The statement summed up what much of the golf world already knows. Scheffler, who walked away with yet another major title at this year's Open, isn't flashy or loud. He's just consistently excellent.
'Nikola Jokic is the only guy I can think of that's a superstar that's equally unassuming in any sport in the modern era, and I'm happy if anybody else can find another example, but it's very rare,' Spieth said. 'That's what Scottie's like.'
Scheffler's performance at Royal Portrush was just like a clinic on the game. Despite some challenging conditions at times and a course that gave several top players trouble, he stayed steady from start to finish. He closed Sunday with a 68 to win by four strokes, claiming his second major of the season and further cementing his status as the undisputed top player in the world. His only blemish was a double-bogey on the eighth hole.
Meanwhile, Spieth's own tournament didn't go according to plan. After a tough start on Thursday, with a 73, he bounced back with a 69 on Friday to make the cut. Following a 72 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday, Spieth finished outside the top 30, marking yet another frustrating major showing for the 2017 Open champion.
Still, Spieth knows greatness when he sees it. His Jokic comparison wasn't just a compliment; it was a recognition of how rare Scheffler's humility and excellence truly are. Like the Denver Nuggets star, Scheffler stays out of the spotlight off the course but dominates when it matters.
While Spieth continues to chase his next big moment, he seems just as much a fan of the game's current king as the rest of us. Meanwhile, Scheffler will get a chance to finish the career grand slam next June at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.

Orient bring in Palace defender Adaramola

Leyton Orient have signed Crystal Palace defender Tayo Adaramola on a season-long loan. Adaramola, 21, has played in the FA Cup for the Eagles, but he spent last season on loan at Stockport County and Bradford City. The left-back becomes Orient's ninth summer signing as they bid to improve on last season's League One play-off final defeat. "Tayo has had a few loans away from Palace now, and he comes here with real pedigree," said the O's head coach Richie Wellens. "He's a proper athlete, gives us a huge amount of pace, and we think we can develop him." Football Transfers

Liverpool duo's absence from preseason squad sparks departure rumours

Liverpool have been extremely busy in the transfer market, and while they have made some statement signings, they are also looking to sell a few players. One such player is Darwin Nunez, who is considered surplus to requirements at Anfield after misfiring last season. Another player who has been linked with a departure is Luis Diaz. Liverpool are in no mood to sell the Colombian, but if they get a substantial bid, then they will consider. Bayern Munich have shown interest in the 28-year-old winger, and they are in constant contact with the Reds to reach an agreement. Amidst the talks, Nunez and Diaz were omitted from Liverpool's squad for the preseason fixture against AC Milan in their Hong Kong tour. Once Liverpool announced their squad list for the fixture, fans were shocked to see that both the forwards were left out. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp In the last two friendlies, Nunez was in fine fettle as he scored four goals, whereas Diaz didn't feature in either of the games. Their absence from this fixture has indicated that the Reds are preparing for life after the attacking duo's departure. A look at Nunez and Diaz's stats from the 2024/25 season While Diaz has attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Nunez has also been a popular name in the transfer window. Napoli tried their best to sign the Uruguayan, but they failed to reach an agreement with Liverpool. As per recent reports, Nunez is linked with a move to Al Hilal, who are seeking a replacement after getting rejected by Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. Last season, Diaz played a big role in helping the Reds win the Premier League. He primarily played on the left wing and also occasionally featured as a striker. The 28-year-old netted 17 goals and provided five assists in 49 matches last season across competitions. He stepped up in crucial games and provided Arne Slot with dynamism on the left flank with his pace, dribbling and work ethic. Meanwhile, Nunez wasn't at his best last season, but registered seven goals and four assists in 45 games. Only time will tell if it is a temporary absence or if the two players will eventually move away from the Liverpool squad this summer. Stokes hits a century in 4th test as England makes a stunning start on 4th day against India

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Ben Stokes scored his 14th test century as England ran up a 311-run lead in the fourth test against India on Saturday, with India then losing two wickets in the first over to go to lunch at 1-2. The England captain had a brilliant all-round performance with his 141 coming after he'd taken five wickets in India's first innings at Old Trafford. The hosts were all out for 669 in their first innings in Manchester, followed by Chris Woakes' double strike and a hat-trick chance. Yashasvi Jaiswal went for a duck after just four balls of India's second innings, caught by Joe Root. And it was even worse for Sai Sudharsan, going for a golden duck when caught by Harry Brook. It was an awful start for India, which looks likely to lose the test and the five-match series, which it trails 2-1, after a thrilling start to the day. The 34-year-old Stokes enthralled the crowd with his spectacular batting — scoring his first test century in two years, including three sixes. After reaching his century, he took off his helmet, looked up to the sky and then raised his bat to acknowledge all ends of the crowd. With it, he became the fourth different England player to get five wickets and a century in a test innings. Having resumed on 544-7, England was determined to pile the pressure on India and Stokes was at the heart of it - supported by Liam Dawson (26) and Brydon Carse (47). Stokes was eventually caught by Sudharsan off Ravindra Jadeja, who finished the innings with four wickets. But a troubled morning got even worse for India after a desperate start to its second innings, leaving it 310 behind. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP cricket:
