Southern Score's maiden entry into data-centre space a positive for firm

The Star4 hours ago
PETALING JAYA: Southern Score Builders Bhd 's (SSBB) latest contract win, although small in value, gives the company exposure to the data centre (DC) boom underway in the country.
SSBB's 51%-owned subsidiary, SJEE Engineering Sdn Bhd, has secured a subcontract to supply, install, test and commission electrical, telco and security underground infra works, worth a contract value of RM19.3mil from Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd (SunCon).
Phillip Capital Research stated the contract win not only provided SSBB with initial exposure to a new DC end-client, but also strengthened its prospects of securing additional work from the client's ongoing DC projects.
This is particularly DC-based mechanical and electrical fit out packages, worth an estimated RM100mil to RM200mil.
'This contract marks SSBB's maiden win in financial year 2026 (FY26), lifting its outstanding order book to RM1.3bil, translating to 7.8 times FY24 revenue cover.
'Assuming a 10% profit after tax (Pat) margin for DC-related projects, we estimate this project to contribute RM2mil Pat in FY26, representing 3% of our FY26 forecast,' the research house stated in a report on the construction management services company.
The project is scheduled to commence in July and be completed by December this year, although SunCon reserves the right to defer the timeline by up to six months at its discretion.
The research house added SSBB's order-book replenishment prospect remained well supported by a RM1.2bil tender pipeline, comprising DC (39%), residential (30%) and government-related building (30%) projects.
Due to its robust order book and strategic expansion into the DC space, Phillip Capital Research has maintained its 'buy' rating and target price of 75 sen a share for SSBB.
The valuation is pegged to a target 18 times price earnings multiple on the FY27 earnings per share of 4.2 sen.
For the third quarter ended March 31, 2025, SSBB's net profit rose to RM10mil from RM7.19mil in the previous corresponding period, while revenue grew to RM59.84mil from RM39.35mil a year earlier.
In a filing on its third-quarter financial performance, the company said it is continuously strengthening its position within the construction value chain, ultimately creating greater value for its stakeholders.
'As part of this commitment, the group has successfully expanded its capabilities to include mechanical and electrical (M&E) services through the strategic acquisition of SJEE, an M&E company specialist in the high-tech, DC and healthcare sectors.'
Additionally, the group said it had established Southern Score Digital Sdn Bhd – a digital arm focusing on digital engineering advisory, construction advisory and building information modelling services.
'With the integration of these services into the group, the board is confident that the group will be able to secure more contracts to enhance existing order book and chart a path towards greater heights and long-term sustainable success,' it said.

White House launches TikTok account amid US legal uncertainty

WASHINGTON: The White House officially launched its TikTok account on Tuesday despite ongoing legal uncertainties surrounding the Chinese-owned platform's operations in the United States. President Donald Trump continues to permit TikTok to operate despite a federal law requiring its sale or ban on national security grounds. 'America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?' read the caption on the account's inaugural post, a 27-second video clip. The new White House account garnered approximately 4,500 followers within the first hour of its launch. Trump's personal TikTok account boasts 110.1 million followers, though his last post dates back to November 5, 2024, which was Election Day. TikTok remains owned by China-based internet company ByteDance despite legislative pressures. A federal mandate requiring TikTok's divestment or prohibition was scheduled to take effect on January 19, the day before Trump's inauguration. The Republican president, whose 2024 campaign heavily utilized social media, suspended the proposed ban. Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer by another 90 days in mid-June, with this extension set to expire in mid-September. While previously supporting restrictions, Trump reversed his position after believing TikTok helped secure young voter support during the November election. The platform maintains nearly two billion global users despite geopolitical tensions. Trump's official X account has 108.5 million followers, though he prefers Truth Social, which he owns and where he has 10.6 million followers. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram maintain 2.4 million and 9.3 million followers respectively. This strategic move into TikTok reflects the administration's continued adaptation to evolving digital landscapes despite regulatory challenges. - AFP

Musk's SpaceX, others win US court challenge to labor board's structure

FILE PHOTO: The seal of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is seen at their headquarters in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 14, 2021. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo (Reuters) -A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday agreed with Elon Musk's SpaceX and two other companies that the U.S. National Labor Relations Board's structure is likely unlawful and blocked the agency from pursuing cases against them. The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is the first by an appeals court to find that a law shielding NLRB administrative judges and the board's five members from being removed at will by the president is likely illegal. The 5th Circuit on Tuesday said the protections from removal prevent the president from exercising his power to control the executive branch. "Because the executive power remains solely vested in the President, those who exercise it on his behalf must remain subject to his oversight," wrote Circuit Judge Don Willett, an appointee of Republican President Donald Trump. A series of similar cases challenging the board's structure are pending, and the Trump administration is making the same arguments after the president fired a Democratic member of the board in January and she sued to get her job back. The 5th Circuit upheld decisions by three judges in Texas that blocked NLRB cases alleging illegal labor practices by SpaceX, pipeline operator Energy Transfer, and Aunt Bertha, which operates a social services search engine, pending the outcome of their lawsuits. "The Employers have made their case and should not have to choose between compliance and constitutionality," wrote Willett. The board and the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk was a top adviser to Trump, spearheading an effort to drastically shrink the federal workforce and slash government spending, until the two men had a public falling out in May. SpaceX has a separate pending lawsuit against the NLRB seeking to block a different board case. The NLRB is the only federal agency that hears private-sector labor disputes. The agency's general counsel can issue complaints against employers or unions that are heard by administrative judges, whose decisions can be appealed to the board. The five-member board has been paralyzed and unable to issue decisions since Trump in January fired Member Gwynne Wilcox. The NLRB was designed by the U.S. Congress to be independent from the White House, and before Wilcox no board member had ever been removed by the president. Tuesday's panel included a second Trump appointee and a judge appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush. White House joins TikTok as Trump shields app from ban

WASHINGTON: The White House launched a TikTok account on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump continues to permit the Chinese-owned platform to operate in the United States despite a law requiring its sale. "America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?" read a caption on the account's first post on the popular video sharing app, a 27-second clip. The account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump's personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on Nov 5, 2024 – Election Day. TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on Jan 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. That extension is due to expire in mid-September. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform – which boasts almost two billion global users – after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. Trump's official account on X, formerly Twitter, has 108.5 million followers – though his favoured social media outlet is Truth Social, which he owns, where he has 10.6 million followers.
