Investors Unfazed by Trump's 100% Semiconductor Tariff Threat

Bloomberg7 days ago
US President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 100% tariff on chip imports left analysts puzzled and shares little changed as the industry tried to work out which companies that make and design semiconductors could be hit.
Trump said in a meeting at the Oval Office this week that the tariff would apply to companies unless they had 'committed to build' in the US. He named Apple Inc., which had just announced a new $100 billion domestic manufacturing plan, as an example. The biggest chipmakers have largely committed to US production projects or seem to be covered by other trade agreements, making it unclear how wide-reaching the levies would be.

Chinese tariff on canola seed comes into force as farmers hope for resolution

REGINA — A Chinese tariff of nearly 76 per cent on Canadian canola seed is set to come into force today. The duty, announced Tuesday, has already caused the price of one of Canada's most valuable crops to fall, wiping out millions of dollars in its value. It comes a year after China launched an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola. The investigation was in response to Canada's 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, and the two countries have since hit each other with various levies. Canola farmers and Ottawa have rejected claims of dumping, arguing exporters have followed rules-based trade. Farmers and Prairie premiers have called on the federal government to resolve the issue by speaking constructively with Chinese officials. US Two-Year Yield on Verge of Falling to Lowest Level Since May

US short-dated bonds yields are near their lowest level in more than three months, reflecting conviction among traders that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month. The two-year yield, among the most sensitive to changes in monetary policy, was trading around 3.67% on Thursday. It has slumped nearly 30 basis points since the end of July, with much of the move following weaker-than-expected payrolls data.
