WHAT HAPPENED?
If you don't have personality, it's difficult to become a champion. Just ask Modric, who recently arrived at Milan after leaving Real Madrid and is already busy spreading messages as a leader. The Croatian star spoke to Milan TV, relaunching in grand style the ambitions of a Rossoneri side called upon to put last season's disappointments behind them. To do so, they can draw on Modric's character and experience, who is immediately in tune with the Milan universe, strengthened by a passion cultivated since childhood.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Modric left Madrid as a bona fide legend after spending 13 years and cementing his place amongst the greatest midfielders of all time. The Croatian wizard's ambition to remain competitive ahead of next year's World Cup saw him take a huge pay cut to join Milan, a club he followed as a kid and considers to be among the most prestigious in Europe. It is widely expected that the 39-year-old will take on a leadership role at the club, wearing the famous No.14 adorned by his ex-manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Although his CV speaks volumes about him, Modric won't be taking anything for granted at his new club. "First of all, I come with a lot of respect for everyone: players, coaches and the club in general," the former Spurs man claimed. "I want to bring my hunger to win, help my teammates in every way possible and work hard to earn my place in the team. It's never easy, you have to work hard and fight."
WHAT LUKA MODRIC SAID
"I wanted to stay in Europe to continue playing competitive football. I had other offers, but when Milan called me, it was clear to me. I wanted it right away," Modric explained. "I was also impressed by the fact that sporting director [Igli] Tare came to Croatia to present the project and everything about Milan to me. It was very important for me; it showed me how much they wanted to bring me here. Milan is one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
"You can't be satisfied with being average, you have to set yourself the highest possible goals: winning titles and competing with the best teams in the world. That's why I'm here.
"As a child, I watched Serie A a lot, and Milan was my favourite team. At that time, we watched Milan a lot in Croatia because it was one of the most popular clubs in the world. My idol [Zvonimir] Boban was also there. Now I'm very happy to be here and can't wait to start this new adventure.
"I always say that the most important thing for me is love: love for the game and for football. I still have it, I feel that fire burning inside me. That's what drives me. Then there's also the fact that I work hard, prepare myself to be at my best and live a healthy lifestyle."
WHAT NEXT?
Modric will begin pre-season duties and link up with his new team-mates later this month, having been with Real Madrid at the Club World Cup until last weekend. Massimiliano Allegri's men will take on Arsenal, Liverpool, Perth Glory, Leeds United, and Chelsea in summer friendlies before kicking off their Serie A campaign on the penultimate weekend of August.

USMNT striker Josh Sargent reportedly nears $28M move to Wolfsburg
United States men's national team striker Josh Sargent could be returning to the Bundesliga in a reported $28 million deal. Norwich City are said to be close to agreeing a deal with Wolfsburg for their 2024-25 Player of the Season, returning him to the league where he started his professional career. MORE — Arsenal unveil Noni Madueke The 25-year-old has a deal with Norwich through the 2027-28 season, and he certainly wants to get back in the USMNT picture ahead of the World Cup next summer. Sargent has five goals in 28 caps for the USMNT but has made just five appearances since the end of the 2022 World Cup. He began his club career at Werder Bremen, breaking into the Bundesliga set-up at 18 and scoring his first two goals against Fortuna Dusseldorf and RB Leipzig in December 2018. What's next for Josh Sargent? Is Wolfsburg a good move? Sargent moved to Norwich City and made his Premier League debut in the 2021-22 season, scoring twice in the league and twice in the League Cup before the Canaries were relegated to the Championship. His record in England's second tier is outstanding, as Sargent has 44 goals and nine assists in 98 appearances including 15 goals in 32 games last season. He'll stay in green for a third-straight club if he moves to Wolfsburg, who sold Lukas Nmecha to Leeds and bought Vini Souza from Sheffield United. Wolfsburg are led by young Dutch manager Paul Simonis and are looking to get back to Europe after several mid-table clubs. Those concerned about the move need only note the price tag, which would represent a significant investment in a player right at the tip of his prime. The reported price would make him the biggest purchases from Wolfsburg since Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler about a decade ago. #norwich close to agreeing a deal with #Wolfsburg for Josh Sargent, that could net the Championship club £21m. Talks are at an advanced stage, I'm told, and Sargent has told Norwich he is keen to move to the Bundesliga.

Clint Dempsey: U.S. Team Needs Success For Pro-USMNT Crowds At World Cup
Clint Dempsey says success on the field during friendlies over the next year would help the U.S. fill seats with pro-American fans at the World Cup next year, a turnaround from pro-opponent crowds at this year's Concacaf Gold Cup. U.S. men's natioanl team coach Mauricio Pochettino and current players took note that spectators were overwhelmingly rooting for Guatemala in St. Louis and Mexico in Houston. "We were outnumbered in the games that mattered in terms of the semifinal and then final. There were more fans for the opposing team. So it's up to the national team players to put a product on the field that makes people want to go spend their hard-earned money," Dempsey said Thursday during an interview with The Associated Press. "I think with everybody being back and having that fight and kind of mixing that together with the quality, I think that will give people motivation to go out there and support this team." The Americans have 10 friendlies on FIFA international fixture dates, two each in September, October, November, March and June, before opening the World Cup at Inglewood, California, on June 12. They play at Seattle seven days later, then close the group stage at Inglewood on June 25. "I want to see a team that is playing in an exciting style, whether it's defending well, building out of the back, getting forward, creating chances, getting goals," Dempsey said. "I just want to see the fight and the grit that we saw in the Gold Cup, just with more quality. That's what I'm looking forward to, that team that gets you believing again that they can go and win games against top competition." Dempsey, tied with Landon Donovan for the American record of 57 international goals, played for U.S. teams that were eliminated in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup, reached the round of 16 in 2010 and '14, and failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament. He says the rebuild for 2022, when the Americans again reached the round of 16, was positive with the new energy but came at the cost of veteran expertise. Defender DeAndre Yedlin was the only holdover from 2014. After winning the Concacaf Nations League in 2021, 2023 and 2024, the Americans were eliminated in the group stage of the 2024 Copa America, causing the U.S. Soccer Federation to replace Gregg Berhalter with Pochettino, and lost in the semifinals of this year's Nations League and the final of this year's Gold Cup. "There wasn't that big mix of a lot of older players kind of passing down lessons that they learned over the years," Dempsey said. "And sometimes it's one of those situations where you need someone to shake things up, right? You don't know if it's egos. You don't know what is the reason for why things don't work out. So I think after Copa America after Nations League, there definitely needed to be some things shook up. "And I think the more that people kind of look over their shoulder a little bit, their spots are not guaranteed, you have a culture that through training you can fight your way into getting into that starting lineup, I think people can get behind that and believe in that." Dempsey and wife Bethany have six children that keep them busy, daughters Elyse (16), Fifi (12) and Maevy (2), and sons Jackson (14) and Clay (10) and Linc (4). Jackson plays for Charlotte's academy. Dempsey doesn't coach, and while he never expected to remain in soccer as a broadcaster, he's pleased with his new roles. At the World Cup, the U.S. will be seeded as one of the three co-hosts. That means the Americans won't have a top 10 opponent in their group and if they finish first could avoid a strong nation in the new round of 32. "If you are looking on numbers and looking on paper," Dempsey said, "you have a chance to do something special and hopefully they take advantage of it. I think we need all the best players fit, playing week in, week out. I'm excited to see what they do with mixing a little bit more quality into this fighting and gritty kind of culture that you've seen throughout the Gold Cup." Reporting by The Associated Press. France Captain Griedge Mbock 'Impatient' for Euro 2025 Debut in Quarterfinal
France captain Griedge Mbock is "impatient" to get going as she prepares to make her first appearance at the Women's European Championship. Les Bleues have been boosted by the return of Mbock for Saturday's quarterfinal against Germany after the experienced defender missed the whole of the group stage due to a calf injury. Although it's not as if they fared too badly without her. France topped one of the toughest groups in the tournament with three wins, including over defending champion England. "I feel really good," Mbock said on Friday. "I was away from the pitch for quite a long time, but today I feel good and I'm going to be back to the pitch. I took all the energy that the team gave me, that helped me to hold on for this time of absence. I'm impatient to start this competition on the pitch and, simply, to be able to contribute." The winner will face world champion Spain or Switzerland in the semifinals. The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of them — since her debut 12 years ago. But at Euro 2025, she was restricted to a place on the substitutes' bench and only then so could she cheer on the team from the sidelines. "It's very good news," France coach Laurent Bonadei said. "She suffered a bit in silence for all this time, far away from the pitch. "However, she was present with her teammates in order to give very good advice. That is why I included her on the bench, because she's captain, she's very precious in the locker room also and she'll be ready to start the game tomorrow." France is on an 11-match winning streak, but the quarterfinals have always been somewhat of a stumbling block for Les Bleues. France has only twice made it into the semifinals of a World Cup or Euros: at the 2011 World Cup, where it lost to the United States, and at Euro 2022, where it fell to Germany. Les Bleues have been eliminated in the quarterfinals in six of the past eight World Cups or Euros. "I like talking about overcoming barriers, and I think that, since October, this team has been overcoming barriers at each step," Bonadei said. "We had the friendly games, we had the Nations League and now our group here, which was labeled the group of death and this team advanced and managed to overcome barriers. "So I have a lot of confidence in this team to overcome this next barrier." As well as being boosted at the back by Mbock, France knows it can rely on its ruthless attack. France bagged 11 goals in its three group stage matches — scored by nine different players. Moreover, Germany will be weakened in defense. Captain Giulia Gwinn was ruled out of the tournament after injuring her knee in her team's opening win and her replacement, Carlotta Wamser, is suspended for the quarterfinal after being sent off in Germany's 4-1 thrashing by Sweden.
