Himachal: Emergency was murder of Constitution, says Jai Ram, Cong hits back
Calling the imposition of emergency, the 'dark chapter of democracy', leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Wednesday said, 'It was the murder of the Constitution. Such a step was never taken by any democratic government in the world in the past. This is due to one person, her ambitions and becoming bigger than the Constitution of the country,' terming the emergency day as a 'black day'. Himachal leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur (File)
'Emergency was the product of the Congressmen's evil mentality. The country's then Prime Minister, late Indira Gandhi, mistook the Constitution of India as the Constitution of Indira,' said former chief minister.
Thakur said, 'Unfortunately, even today the Congress does not accept its wrongdoings. That is why when the Sukhu government came to power, it brought the first Bill in the legislative assembly to stop the 'Loktantra Prahari Samman' amount started by our government.'
'Slogans like 'Indira is India and India is Indira' reflected that mentality of Congress,' former state president and MP Suresh Kashyap said, while speaking at a programme in Baddi.
Kashyap said that the declaration of Emergency in 1975 was not the result of any national crisis, but it was a strategy of a scared Prime Minister to save power, which was imposed due to the challenge posed by the judiciary. 'Indira Gandhi misused Article 352 under the pretext of 'internal disturbance', while at that time there was no war, no rebellion and no external attack, it was just the stubbornness to neutralise the decision of Allahabad high court to cancel Indira's electoral membership and save her chair,' said Kashyap.
Indira Gandhi used the hammer of emergency: Bindal
BJP state president Rajiv Bindal said, '50 years ago, emergency was imposed in India. It was a dark chapter in the history of Independence.'
'Prime Minister of the country, Indira Gandhi, to save her throne, bypassed the decision of the HC and imposed emergency in the country and transformed the whole country into a dictatorship. After 50 years, the whole country should know about that horrific decision,' said Bindal.
Sukhu lashes out at BJP
Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu lashed out at the BJP for observing Emergency Day as a 'black day', saying the BJP was tarnishing the very Constitution that gave it power.
'Congress established democracy and framed the Constitution. Today, BJP is observing 'Murder of Democracy Day' by defaming that very Constitution. It is this Constitution that brought them to power, and now they are disrespecting it,' said Sukhu, taking a direct dig at the BJP's campaign.

Gujarat AAP's Makwana resigns from all posts; alleges bias against OBCs
Ahmedabad: Botad MLA Umesh Makwana has announced his resignation from all positions within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat, accusing the party of discrimination against members of the OBCs. However, he clarified that he is not resigning from his MLA seat. Makwana submitted his resignation from the posts of AAP's Gujarat Assembly Whip as well as the party's National Joint Secretary, stating that his decision was based on long-standing internal bias within the party's structure. 'The Aam Aadmi Party, like the BJP and Congress, has shown step-motherly treatment to the people of the Backward Classes,' Makwana said in a statement. 'All political parties, without exception, have been unfair to OBC communities,' he added. Makwana, who has been one of AAP's more prominent OBC faces in Gujarat, claimed that despite repeated attempts to raise concerns over representation and internal equity, his voice was ignored. On this, AAP's Isudan Gadhvi posted, 'Umesh Makwana is suspended from the party for five years for anti-party and anti-Gujarat activities.' Makwana, a from Bhavnagar University, is a social worker and philanthropist, known locally for establishing primary and secondary schools. He is also known for distributing over 600,000 food packets during the COVID‑19 lockdown along with other AAP MLAs under the 'Manavta Seva Rath' initiative. Belonging to the Koli community, he runs a construction and general trading business, and declared assets worth around Rs 85 lakh with liabilities of Rs 28 lakh in his 2022 election affidavit. High on civic engagement, his legislative record shows nearly 97 per cent attendance and 24 Assembly debates, far above state averages. Political observers believe this move could trigger tensions within AAP's Gujarat unit, which is still building its grassroots presence in the state. Makwana's exit from organisational roles is being seen as a blow to the party's efforts to consolidate OBC support ahead of future electoral battles. Makwana's continued position as a sitting MLA may indicate his intention to either remain as an Independent or align with another party in the near future. Meanwhile, the AAP delivered a strong electoral performance by retaining the Visavadar Assembly seat in Gujarat's bypolls held on June 19, with senior leader Gopal Italia defeating the BJP's Kirit Patel by a margin of 17,554 votes (75,942 to 58,388).

‘Pakistan's PR': Congress, BJP join hands to attack NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani
Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Thursday criticised Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate of Indian origin for the New York City mayoral polls. Zohran Mamdani announced a campaign platform focused on appealing to the everyday concerns of New Yorkers.(PTI) Singhvi said that when Mamdani speaks, the public relations team of Pakistan 'takes a day off.' 'When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan's PR team takes the day off. India doesn't need enemies with 'allies' like him shouting fiction from New York,' Singhvi said in a post on the social media platform X. Zohran Mamdani also faced criticism from the other side of the aisle in India, with BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also attacking the New York assemblyman. According to the actor turned politician, Mamdani sounds more Pakistani than Indian. "His mother is Mira Nair, one of our best filmmakers, Padma Shri , a beloved and celebrated daughter born and raised in great Bharat based in New York, she married Mehmood Mamdani ( Gujarati origin) a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran, he sounds more Pakistani than Indian,"Ranaut claimed. Zohran Mamdani declares victory over Andrew Cuomo in NYC Democratic mayoral primary Zohran Mamdani has claimed victory over a wounded, but still formidable, former state governor, Andrew Cuomo, in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary. Now he faces an equally tough task: Defeating Mayor Eric Adams and a Republican opponent — and maybe even Cuomo again — in the general election, while fending off critics who argue the 33-year-old democratic socialist is too far to the left. While the results have yet to be finalised, Mamdani had a commanding lead that will be exceedingly difficult for Cuomo to overcome when the vote count resumes July 1 in New York City's ranked-choice voting system. Mamdani's likely win was a political lightning bolt—partly because of the stunning upset of New York's once all-powerful former governor and also because of the signals it sent about what kind of leader Democrats are gravitating toward following the party's bruising loss to Republican President Donald Trump last year.

Shashi Tharoor shreds Pakistan in fluent French—Watch the Congress MP's viral speech in Moscow
Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, is famously celebrated as a wordsmith, rhetorician, linguist, and logophile. However, did you know that this seasoned politician is also a polyglot, equally capable of impressing you with his fluent French? Tharoor's command of the language extends far beyond a mere 'Au revoir,' 'Bon appétit,' 'S'il vous plaît,' or 'C'est la vie.' In a striking display of his linguistic and diplomatic prowess, Shashi Tharoor openly criticised Russia in Moscow for its plans to include Pakistan in a counter-terrorism panel. In Moscow, Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the Russian Liberal Democratic Party, announced Russia's plans to host a conference early next year involving the parliamentary leaders of six countries: Turkey, Iran, Russia, India, Pakistan, and China. He emphasised the necessity for concrete action, rather than mere discussion, on the issue of terrorism. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared his speech on his Instagram account, captioning it, 'My conversation (in French) with Russian Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) Chair Leonid Slutsky, on Tuesday in Moscow, addressing the problem of Pakistan providing a safe haven for the terrorist groups.' Upon hearing Russian Slutsky's proposal, Shashi Tharoor said in fluent French, 'Il y a un pays qui, malheureusement, offre un refuge sûr à ces groupes terroristes.' (There is a country that unfortunately provides a safe haven for these terrorist groups) Tharoor further remarked, 'Ils ont leur quartier général, ils forment des terroristes dans leur pays, les financent, les arment, et les envoient dans d'autres nations.' (They [Pakistan] have their headquarters, train terrorists in their country, fund them, arm them, and send them to other nations.) "Il est difficile pour nous d'ignorer le fait qu'ils bénéficient d'un patronage au Pakistan." (It is difficult for us [India] to ignore the fact that they enjoy patronage in Pakistan) Tharoor concluded. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of an event in Moscow. "Good to catch up with old friend Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the #PrimakovReadings in Moscow," Tharoor, who is currently visiting Russia, said in a post on X. Tharoor, who is the head of Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, also met former Russian Ambassador to the UN Andrey Denisov, who is now the First Deputy Chair of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian Federation Council. "Enjoyed catching up with old friend Andrey Denisov, former Russian Ambassador to the @UN and to China , and now the First Deputy Chair of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian Federation Council," Tharoor said in another post. The annual 'Primakov Readings' is a meeting of experts of international relations and world economy from 40 countries including India.
