A more than 100-year-old home was destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning in North Kentville, N.S.
The Kentville Volunteer Fire Department was called around 2 a.m. to the fire on Aldershot Road. Deputy Fire Chief Ian Fairclough said four people were home at the time and were able to safely escape.
'The fire had spread throughout the home within about 15 minutes of it being reported,' Fairclough said in an email to CTV News.
'The bulk of the fire was knocked down within an hour, but it took significant time for overhaul to find all hidden fire left in the walls, ceilings and floors, as the amount of damage meant it was not safe to be inside most of the structure.'
He said there were approximately 40 firefighters on scene, with the last unit leaving around 8 a.m. One firefighter was assessed on scene for a minor injury, but did not require hospitalization.
The home was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Fairclough said it is not believed to be suspicious. The fire itself started outside the home before spreading.
The building and property are being secured by the insurance company. He said the residents are taking with family until they can find other accommodations through their insurance company.
