Former hurler Niall Gilligan found not guilty of assaulting boy with stick
Mr Gilligan, of Rossroe, Kilmurry, Sixmilebridge, had been accused of assault causing harm to the boy at the Jamaica Inn Hostel, Sixmilebridge on October 5th, 2023.

At Ennis Circuit Court on Wednesday, the jury delivered a majority not guilty verdict.
Mr Gilligan sat impassive in the court as the registrar read out the not guilty verdicts in the case concerning the assault causing harm charge and use of a stick.

Walmart stabbing suspect faces terrorism charges in mass attack at Michigan store
A 42-year-old man is facing charges of terrorism and assault with intent to murder after 11 shoppers were stabbed at a Walmart supermarket in the US state of assailant used a folding knife to stab five men and six women, including a Walmart employee, on Saturday afternoon in Traverse victims, ranging in age from 21 to 84, are all expected to survive. "The deputy took the suspect into custody without further incident."He added that the suspect's motive was "yet to be determined". "Our detectives, with assistance from the FBI, interviewed him at length, and that will be part of the investigation as it moves forward," he Pennington, a Walmart spokesperson, said: "Violence like this is unacceptable. "Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders."FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said on Saturday that federal personnel were responding to provide any necessary support to local Governor Gretchen Whitmer said: "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence."Traverse City is about 255 miles (410km) north-west of Detroit.

Hero dog attacks man who attempted to assault woman on the street
A young woman walking her dog through a Massachusetts park said her loyal pet saved her from being attacked by a creepy man who forcefully grabbed her arm. The victim was strolling with her dog in the Rockland Town Forest when she was approached by a man who attempted to assault her on Wednesday, police said. He allegedly made the woman, who is in her twenties, feel extremely uncomfortable right off the bat. 'During this encounter, they were alone in the woods,' Rockland Police Lieutenant Steven Somers told WCVB. 'He was inquiring if she was alone, then the conversation went inappropriate, started making inappropriate comments to the young female.' As she tried to walk away from the culprit, he aggressively yanked her arm so she was unable to leave, she told police. Thankfully, she was not alone in her fight against her assailant, as her Australian Shepherd promptly leaped into action to protect its owner. The canine reportedly lunged at the suspect, causing him to lose grip of the woman so she could sprint away to her car. She called the police and outlined the distressing encounter with the man, who has yet to be identified. He was described as a white male with a medium build, likely in his fifties. He had short-to-medium length hair with some grey in it and no facial hair. During the alleged attack, he was wearing a light t-shirt, khakis and sneakers. The Rockland Police Department scoured the wooded area, but officers were unable to track down a man who matched this description. In the meantime, the police department has upped its presence in the park. Cops are now asking for the public's help as they continue their investigation into the alarming matter. While the victim and her heroic dog remain anonymous, members of the local community have spoken out about the shocking incident. 'It's very scary to think that something like that could happen right next door,' Gabriel Lisboa, an employee of the nearby Advanced Auto Sales, told WCVB. 'I wish we were able to help a little bit more with more cameras because the cops passed by yesterday. 'We tried looking, find something at least that would give them a lead at least.' Maria Depaule, a Rockland resident who walks her own dog through the trail almost everyday said she had never felt unsafe before. She also said she noticed that there were plenty of police officers in the park on Thursday. The victim was not physically injured after the Wednesday incident, but police said she was left shaken and afraid.

Prayer service held for mother and two children killed in shooting incident
A prayer service held for a mother and two children killed in a shooting incident in Co Fermanagh has been told that 'we cannot rationalise what should never have taken place'. Vanessa Whyte, 45, a vet originally from Co Clare, her son James, 14, and daughter Sara, 13, were killed in a suspected triple murder and attempted suicide at a house in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday morning. He described how she worked hard and laughed a lot, and carried burdens 'we may never fully understand'. 'But we're here, and that's the main thing. 'We're also here to remember and be a support for (Vanessa's mother) Mary and her family, and the siblings. They're at home tonight, they decided not to come. James and Sara, young lives just beginning, so full of promise, so loved, so full of light, they've been taken away from this world all too soon in a violent way. 'We just find it impossible, my dear friends, to make sense of any of it. We cannot rationalise what should never have taken place, what we can do is remember the pain that we feel now, that pain is borne out of love. 'If we didn't love Vanessa, and so many of you would have known her, and if we didn't love her children, we wouldn't be grieving. This heartbreak is the price we pay for love, but it is also love in itself that will help Vanessa's family and all of us indeed, to carry it over the weeks and months to come. A prayer service was held for Vanessa Whyte and her children (PA) 'Mary, I know you're at home and you're listening. She was Vanessa's beloved mother, and her grief is a very deep ocean indeed. He said the family's hearts have been 'fractured beyond belief'. 'You have lost a sister, a niece and a nephew, and there are no words that can fill the space that they have left behind. But you're not alone. 'You are held by a community of people who are walking with you through this darkness.' A murder investigation has been launched, while an adult male remains in a serious condition in hospital. It is understood that the funeral of Ms Whyte and her two children will take place in Barefield later this week. On Saturday, detectives from the major investigation team, who are carrying out the murder investigation, said they are continuing with their inquiries and appealed for information involving the movements of a vehicle. Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness said: 'Our investigation is ongoing and we are working tirelessly to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy. 'I would continue to appeal generally for anyone with information to come forward, and more specifically, I would ask anyone who saw a silver Mercedes saloon car being driven in the Clones Road area of Newtownbutler, or between Maguiresbridge and Newtownbutler, on the evening of Tuesday July 22 to call detectives on 101, quoting reference 276 23/07/25. 'Anyone who was travelling in the area and who may have captured dashcam footage which could assist, please get in touch.' The man who remains in a serious condition in hospital was a member of the same household, the PSNI said.
