Elgin men charged after crash leads to gunfire, high-speed chase, officials say
Two Elgin men who allegedly struck a vehicle while driving in Addison, fired at the people in the car when they followed them and took police on a high-speed chase are being held in the DuPage County jail without bond, officials said.
The incident began early Sunday morning when the driver of a Hyundai Sonata — later identified as Iban Pelayo, 19, of the 400 block of Locust Street — reportedly drove onto the shoulder of the Lake Street exit ramp from Interstate 290 in an attempt to get around a car, a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and the Elmhurst Police Department said.
When he merged back onto the ramp, he struck the car's right passenger side and drove away, the report said.
The victims followed the car, which struck a mailbox near Stone Avenue and Ellsworth Avenue but did not stop, officials said. As the two vehicles continued to an area near Lake Street and Villa Avenue, the passenger in the Sonata — identified as Cristopher Martinez Mendoza, 19, of the 400 block of South Edison Avenue — allegedly fired a gun at the victims' car, prompting them to end the pursuit and call the police, the release said.
An Elmhurst police officer spotted the Sonata about 1:05 a.m. and tried to pull it over near the I-290 eastbound on-ramp but Pelayo instead drove onto the interstate and tried to flee at speeds that reached 115 mph, the release said.
When Pelayo exited at St. Charles Road, his car crashed, causing it to go airborne, and was stopped by police before he could drive away, officials said. Martinez Mendoza fled on foot and was apprehended about 10 minutes later, the release said.
Police recovered two live 9 mm rounds from the Sonata and a Polymer 80, known as a ghost gun, with a 9 mm magazine loaded with 10 rounds from a culvert where Martinez Mendoza allegedly threw it, the report said.
Martinez Mendoza has been charged with one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm-direction of an occupied vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon-no FOID.
Pelayo was charged with one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm-direction of an occupied vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted the prosecution's request that both men be retained in jail pending the case's outcome, the release said.
'Crashing into and then shooting at another vehicle before leading police on a high-speed chase, as alleged in this case, may be something you see in the movies, but in DuPage County this type of behavior will quickly land you behind bars,' State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. 'Thankfully, no innocent motorists were injured or killed as a result of the defendants' alleged actions.'

North Fort Myers man faces vehicular homicide charges in crash that left one dead
A North Fort Myers man faces vehicle homicide charges after authorities say he raced another vehicle, weaving through traffic, which led to the other driver's death. Dillon Glenn Sandy, 21, faces one count of vehicular homicide. Sandy's court case file, which would include the arrest affidavit with the victim's identity, was not available by publication. Around 1:45 p.m. April 18, Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a fatal traffic crash on northbound Interstate 75, on the Daniels Parkway Overpass, at mile marker 131. Fatal crash arrests: Second driver arrested in Pennsylvania in Cape Coral 125-mph crash that killed motorist A Hyundai Sonata driven by Sandy and a Nissan Maxima, driven by the victim, a 24-year-old Lehigh Acres man, were traveling north on I-75, at high speed, approaching slower traffic, when Sandy's car entered the right lane to pass the slower traffic, while the victim's car entered the left lane to pass the slower traffic. Troopers said both vehicles then attempted to change back onto the center lane. In doing so, troopers said, the left side of Sandy's car collided with the right side of the victim's car. After the collision, both cars collided with the concrete barrier wall. The victim's car overturned, ejecting the driver. Sandy then collided with the ejected driver, who died on scene. Sandy and a 23-year-old North Fort Myers man traveling with him suffered injuries and were taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center, in Fort Myers. Troopers said that on June 5, after an exhaustive criminal investigation, they arrested Sandy. Sandy remained in custody by publication on $50,000 bond. His arraignment is July 7. Police make three arrests in connection to OKC food hall shooting in May
Oklahoma City police have made three arrests in connection with a May 5 shooting near The Collective. The shooting ― which seriously wounded four people and injured at least five more ― occurred outside the food hall in Oklahoma City's Midtown, where people had gathered for a Cinco de Mayo celebration and to watch an Oklahoma City Thunder playoff game against the Denver Nuggets. According to police, investigators learned there was a fight outside of the restaurant between a female suspect and two other patrons. As detailed in arrest affidavits written by police, detectives learned from shooting victims that the 23-year-old woman was heard calling her boyfriend claiming that she had been jumped and that "she was going to have her man come over and shoot the spot up." About five minutes after the phone call, the boyfriend, 25, pulled up in a red Hyundai Sonata with another man, and shots were fired at the crowd, according to the affidavits. The Oklahoman is not naming the three people because they have not been formally charged. More: Police searching for answers after shooting near OKC food hall: Everything we know so far Affidavits also show that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Moore and was later found burned near Interstate 240 Service Road just west of Bryant Avenue on May 7. After the shooting, the woman's boyfriend was stopped in traffic in Moore on May 12 and was arrested on weapon charges, according to Oklahoma City police. Detectives later learned the names of the other two people during the investigation, and both were taken into custody on June 3, almost a full month after the shooting occurred. The boyfriend was already in violation of his probation after pleading guilty in 2024 to assault and battery with a deadly weapon and was taken into federal custody May 23, jail spokesman Mark Opgrande said. The suspects face a range of accusations, including multiple complaints of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, use of a vehicle to facilitate a shooting, third-degree arson and destroying evidence. Online court records do not list attorneys for any of the three in the case. Immediately after the shooting, The Collective provided shelter to people who were injured while first responders were coming to the property. "People were running in to The Collective and the staff was getting them in, making sure they were staying as safe as possible in there," said Nathan Wiewel, a spokesperson for The Collective. "The staff at The Collective were treating them, making sure that they were as safe as possible, making sure that responders could get to them." As the shooting fell on May 5, the food hall was hosting a Cinco de Mayo event and had additional security due to anticipated crowds. The recent shooting outside The Collective seemed to echo an incident from 2012 when eight people were hurt from gunfire in Oklahoma City's Bricktown. A crowd of thousands had been watching a Thunder-Lakers playoff game on the jumbotron outside the arena in Thunder Alley when the 2012 shooting occurred, which led to officials shutting down the large outdoor watch parties. It turned out that the 2012 shooting was not directly tied to the game but was the result of a dispute between two groups of people on the street. As far as the May 2025 incident outside The Collective, however, police said they do not know what caused the fight between the women ahead of the shooting but said they would continue investigating. "These swift arrests highlight the tireless work of our investigators and our commitment to keeping Oklahoma City safe," police said in a news release June 4. In the meantime, The Collective is now operational again after almost a month of recovery.
