Rivalling Musk's Optimus Robot, China Unveils Rs 5 Lakh Bot That Can Fist-Fight

NDTV7 days ago
A humanoid robot that can fist-fight and even do cartwheels has been unveiled by a Chinese company that costs a little over Rs 5 lakh ($6,000), rivalling other companies producing similar bots. The new R1 robot by Unitree Robotics, unveiled on Friday, could be seen performing handstands and throwing combination punches.
The R1 weighs about 55 pounds and has 26 joints to allow for flexible movement. It is also equipped with multimodal artificial intelligence, including voice and image recognition. The robot's capabilities, as shown in the viral video, mark a significant leap forward in robotic locomotion and balance.
Apart from displaying ample boxing capabilities, the robot also performed "kip-up' -- a complex gymnastic manoeuvre involving a person or robot transitioning from a supine position to standing without using their hands.

As of the last update, the video had garnered nearly three million views and hundreds of comments, with the majority asking if the robot could perform everyday chores.
"Will it fight anyone you point at? Asking for a friend," said one user while another added: "Can it walk my dog and serve breakfast to my kids?"
Meanwhile, other users tagged Elon Musk and his Tesla Optimus company, which also develops general-purpose, bipedal humanoids, capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive or boring.
"Yo @Tesla@Tesla_Optimus@elonmusk. You guys still trying compete? Hope you're not still in the lab in few years while these guys are ramping and deploying next year?" the user said.
Apart from Mr Musk's company, US firm Boston Dynamics and its Atlas robots have also helped pioneer the humanoid robot market. However, an advanced human-like bot for just Rs 5 lakh, if done successfully, could mark a major milestone for China in the robotics and AI race.
Currently, Unitree's larger, more advanced humanoid robot H1 sells for more than Rs 77 lakh ($90,000). Unitree's older G1 humanoid, which has costs Rs 13.8 lakh ($16,000), grew popular for use in research labs and schools.

Eight cooperatives join hands to launch 'Bharat' taxi service, onboard 200 drivers

India's cooperative sector is set to challenge ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber with the launch of a taxi service under the brand Bharat by the end of this year, backed by Rs 300 crore authorised capital and having already onboarded 200 drivers across four states. The Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, registered on June 6, represents a consortium of eight prominent cooperatives, including the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). Last month, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had indicated that a cooperative taxi service will be launched by the end of 2025, while unveiling a comprehensive cooperative policy for the sector. "The key objective is to ensure better returns to drivers and provide quality, safe and affordable services to passengers," NCDC Deputy Managing Director Rohit Gupta told PTI. The venture operates without any government stake, being entirely funded by the participating cooperatives. The founding members also include Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL). Around 200 drivers have already joined the cooperative, with 50 each from Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The cooperative is actively reaching out to other cooperative organisations to expand the network, he said. The cooperative has floated a tender to select a technology partner for developing the ride-hailing application. "We will finalise the technology partner in a few days," Gupta said, adding that the app is expected to be ready by December. A technology consultant and IIM-Bangalore have been roped in to formulate the marketing strategy for the pan-India platform, which will operate as a single app across the country. The service will adopt a cooperative pricing model, with membership drives currently underway to scale operations. The move comes as the cooperative sector seeks to leverage its collective strength to compete with established private players in the rapidly growing ride-hailing market.

Tamannaah Bhatia defends sensual lyrics of ‘Aaj Ki Raat', says babies eat only while dancing to it: ‘Mothers care about baby eating'

Tamannaah Bhatia has made a name for herself in both the South and Hindi film industries with her solid performances. She is also widely known for her dance numbers, including Stree 2's hit track 'Aaj Ki Raat'. In a recent interaction, Tamannaah spoke about how she chooses her projects and why she can't take up work just for the sake of it. She also defended the sensual lyrics of 'Aaj Ki Raat' and shared how kids love the song. Speaking to The Lallantop, Tamannaah said, 'So be it. If a child is eating their food while watching my song.' When the host asked which song she was referring to, the actor said 'Aaj Ki Raat' and added, 'I can't tell you the number of mothers that have called me up and said, 'My child will eat food only if he hears Aaj Ki Raat.' Because bacche apne diaper mein aise aise hil rahe hote hai (moves side to side).' But when she was questioned about the sensual lyrics of the song and whether that might impact a child, she responded, 'Mummyo ka concern hai ki bacche khana kha rahe hai ya nahi? Priorities hote hai. Ek aadh saal mein unko kaunse lyrics samajh mein aayenge (Mothers' concerns are whether their kids are eating properly or not. There are priorities. What lyrics will they understand at the age of one)? There is music. We forget films, we remember the songs. It's the fact.' The song 'Aaj Ki Raat', which revolves around a woman asking her lover to admire her from a distance, turned out to be a massive hit with audiences. Stree 2 also enjoyed tremendous box office success, earning Rs 857.15 crore worldwide. The film starred Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana in key roles. Following 'Aaj Ki Raat', Tamannaah also appeared in the item number 'Nasha' from the recent Ajay Devgn-starrer Raid 2. On the professional front, Tamannaah Bhatia will next be seen in VVAN: Force of the Forest, alongside Sidharth Malhotra. The film is directed by Deepak Mishra and Arunabh Kumar. She also has Ranger in the pipeline, which stars Ajay Devgn.
