Field Of Gold found to be lame after Sussex Stakes disappointment

Rhyl Journal3 days ago
John and Thady Gosden's star three-year-old was sent off the 1-3 favourite to emulate his sire Kingman and thrive against his elders on the Sussex Downs, but could only finish fourth as his Juddmonte-owned pacemaker Qirat caused a seismic shock at 150-1.
The Clarehaven training team suggested the 'engine wasn't there' in the immediate aftermath of the contest and now a potential reason for his disappointing performance could have been found.

'We don't have the full picture yet, but he is lame on his left-hind,' Barry Mahon, European racing manager for Juddmonte, told the PA news agency.
'John called me this morning at 7am and said he was 'off' behind with a bit of swelling in his leg and the vet is due out to see him later today so until we have the full picture we can't fully diagnose it.
'But the fact he is lame suggests that could potentially be why we didn't see the true horse that we know yesterday. We just have to sit tight now until the vet can run through all the tests he can run through.'
With the severity of Field Of Gold's setback still to be determined, it is unknown at this stage when one of the standout performers of the 2025 season will be next seen in competitive action.
Mahon continued: 'Plans are on ice and the thing with these things is, it might be a week before anything will show up on an X-ray or whatever, so it's not something you will have an answer for straight away.
'But the fact the horse is lame indicates there is an issue and we have to address that. What that is and whether it will be a short fix or a long fix, we just don't know at this stage.'
Despite Field Of Gold's surprise reversal, there was still plenty of joy for the Juddmonte team with Ralph Beckett's Qirat stealing the spotlight, with Mahon reflecting on a race of contrasting fortunes.
He added: 'It was disappointing from a Field Of Gold point of view, but from a Juddmonte point of view the winner is a home bred and won it in good style and there has to be some satisfaction in that.
'As someone said to me yesterday, it was bittersweet but there was still plenty of sweet.'

Martin names the only Rangers player who was 'fantastic' vs Motherwell

Although captain James Tavernier opened the scoring for the visitors to Fir Park within the opening 14 minutes, Jens Berthel Askou's men dominated the second 45 and got their leveller late on, thanks to Emmanuel Longelo. Speaking after the game, boss Martin publicly criticised his players, outlining that there is a mentality issue at Rangers and some players aren't willing to run and do the hard graft when things get tough. Read more: In his post-match press conference, though, Martin did single out a few players for their positive showings. Indeed, he dubbed Lyall Cameron's display off the bench 'fantastic', as he praised central defensive duo John Souttar and Nasser Djiga, as well as goalkeeper Jack Butland. He said: "Lyall Cameron came on, was fantastic. [He] just ran, just played his position, did everything that we worked on in training, was great. "John [Souttar] and Nasser [Djiga], Jack [Butland] did great. So there's a few really, really good performances, but not enough." Rangers now turn their attention back to the European scene, with the first leg of a third-round Champions League qualifier on the horizon against Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night. Should they get the better of the Czech side, the Ibrox club could face the winners of the tie between Benfica and Nice or whoever emerges victorious out of Red Bull Salzburg and Club Brugge in the play-offs.

Benjamin Sesko set off 'alarm bells' at Arsenal as Man Utd given cause for concern

Benjamin Sesko looks likely to leave RB Leipzig this month, with Manchester United and Newcastle interested in the striker but he was once a key target for Arsenal before they signed Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal opted against the signing of Benjamin Sesko in order to sign Viktor Gyokeres after deeming the RB Leipzig striker a high risk. Mikel Arteta's side finally announced the arrival of the Swede last month in what had been one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer window. ‌ The two key striker targets for the Gunners ended up being Gyokeres and Sesko, but it was the 27-year-old who was preferred, with Sesko now at the centre of a battle between Manchester United and Newcastle United. ‌ There was a time when the Slovenian, 22, looked set for a move to north London considering the club had amassed a year's worth of background work on his progress at RB Leipzig, according to ESPN. ‌ After engaging in preliminary talks with the Bundesliga outfit, Arsenal chiefs soon found that any deal for the promising forward would be too expensive for a player who has yet to realise his full potential. The story reported that there were three main reasons for a deal for Sesko setting off "alarm bells" including the mammoth fee Leipzig were requesting as well as his own personal terms. Having only had two seasons in a European top-five league - where he scored 21 goals across all competitions last season - sources said the club were wary about the mental demands Sesko would have to endure of being the player leading the Arsenal attack and whether he'd be able to handle the scrutiny. While Gyokeres has yet to establish himself in one of Europe's premier domestic leagues, his stunning record of 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting CP as well as the confidence Arsenal had in the strength of his character saw them pull the trigger on a move for the striker. Sesko is reportedly yet to decide his next move, with Newcastle seeing their bid of just under £70m rejected after they turned down Liverpool's £110m offer for Alexander Isak. While Ruben Amorim's side have yet to table a formal offer for the 22-year-old, they remain intensely interested in bolstering their attacking ranks with his signature. ‌ However, Arsenal's reasons for pulling out of a deal for him could spark some concern at United, who know all about spending big money on young strikers who end up struggling to justify their price tag. The potential arrival of Sesko could spell the end of Rasmus Hojlund's Old Trafford career as Amorim admitted he remains unsure of whether the Dane - who said he wants to fight for his place - will remain a United player by the end of the month. United spent £72m on the 22-year-old and are already aware that his value has dropped significantly since joining due to his low scoring rate. They have reportedly slashed his price tag and would be willing to listen to offers for him for just £30m. ‌ Speaking after the striker scored in United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth in pre-season, the Red Devils boss said: "I'm really happy with Rasmus, but I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market. "The important thing is that the strikers who are here are working really well, they are improving, they are helping the team and that's the most important thing. The important thing is that Rasmus is scoring goals. ‌ "He's connecting really well with the team. He's improving. Again, I don't know what is going to happen until the market is closed. We suffered a a lot because of the lack of goals last season. But I think not just the goals, but the way Rasmus connects the play. "Every time we have to kick the ball, we are kicking the ball when we are more pressed. The ability for him to hold the defender and to connect in the support is helping us to play a lot better and we are playing better because he's playing better."

Hibs predicted XI for Scottish Premiership kick-off

Pick the same starting XI and hope they get the job done. All being equal, that would seem a pretty simple formula for Hibs at Dens Park today. Yeah, simple ... The issue, of course, is that a lot of the guys who SHOULD be expected to start against Dundee played a lot of minutes in Thursday night's Europa League contest with Midtjylland at Easter Road, which went into extra time before the Danes scored a dramatic late winner. Physically, as well as emotionally, a few of David Gray's go-to performers might not be feeling at their absolute best. Which is never ideal on day one of their domestic season. Hibs also travel to Belgrade on Wednesday to take on Partizan in the Europa Conference League the following night. Does the manager hold anything in reserve for that one? The club have never made it to European group/league phase football, so the prize on offer must be pretty tempting. On a day when Josh Mulligan is making a return to Dens, however, it's not as if Gray has a lot of options. Nicky Cadden played less than half an hour in midweek, stepping down at half-time in extra time with a tight hamstring after coming on as a sub midway through the second half. Hibs are still a midfielder short. The back three are set in stone. And new striker Thibault Klidje is yet to show much, in limited appearances. With all of that in mind, we probably shouldn't expect too many changes. Probably. Anyway, here's how we think the visitors - still without Joe Newell, Rudi Molotnikov and Lewis Miller, for different reasons - might line up: 1 . GK Jordan Smith Absolutely outstanding in the midweek loss to Midtjylland, with the Danes requiring a couple of world-class strikes to beat the 30-year-old Englishman. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . RCB Warren O'Hora Irish defender was another who emerged from his Europa League baptism of fire with credit. Back to the bread and butter menu of SPFL action today. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . CB Rocky Bushiri A force of nature. Has already started the season as he means to go on. With drama. So much drama. | SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . LCB Jack Iredale Looked absolutely spent - and possibly a little hurt - by the time he was replaced in extra time on Thursday night. Hibs could drop Jordan Obita into the back three, at a pinch. | SNS Group Photo Sales
