The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed that two people died when a car went off a cliff at KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
The bodies of a woman and a Grade 12 pupil were retrieved from the wreckage on Sunday after an aerial search was conducted to find the vehicle.
The department said MEC Siboniso Duma sent a team from his office to visit the Shabalala and Madlala families in Ward 13, KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg.

'This follows the unfortunate tragic accident that claimed two lives. It is not clear what caused a vehicle driven by Mama Anastasia Shabalala to reverse and inadvertently fall off a cliff. We thank a local teacher Ms Mbali Msomi who alerted Traffic Ambassador, Ayanda Msweli. We acted immediately by calling for the helicopter rescue team and reinforcement.
'We are saddened by the death of Mama Shabalala and Lona Madlala, a Grade 12 learner. Both were in the car. Mama Shabalala, a single parent, received this car last year as a gift from her children. Sadly she left us on Women's Day,' Duma said.
Duma said the Helicopter Rescue Team worked under very difficult conditions to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage located more than 800 metres down the cliff.
'We thank Reverend Xaba and our Ambassador, Pastor Vidima for being with the families. I have mandated my office to arrange social workers to provide professional counselling service to the families.'

JOHANNESBURG - Judiciary monitoring group Judges Matter said it's high time the country's judiciary doubles down on its zero tolerance for abuse of power. This comes after Chief Justice Mandisa Maya announced a landmark sexual harassment policy for the South African judiciary on Women's Day at the weekend. The 25-page document is part of efforts to address longstanding claims of sexual harassment in the legal fraternity. The newly introduced policy outlines clear procedures for addressing complaints of sexual misconduct in the judiciary and disciplinary measures against offenders. Co-ordinator at Judges Matter, Alison Tilley, weighs in on the move. 'The idea is to establish a gender desk at the office of the Chief Justice, and people would be able to go and complain there, but in different ways, so you don't have to do a full-on Judicial Service Commission complaint like Ms Mengo had to do. You can also raise a concern in confidence and ask for mediation.' Tilley said the policy also seeks to address the skewered power dynamics that make it hard for complainants to come forward. 'It does do that, and then it also creates a reporting mechanism so that you don't have to directly confront your boss or your boss' boss, but you can then go to the gender desk and report there and talk through your options.'

Lotus Gardens women create a lasting safe space for abuse survivors
Pretoria West women recently committed to support each other and create a safe space to fight issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and crimes against women and girls. On August 8, the group from Lotus Gardens gathered at ELC Church to establish an important safe space and support network in the fight against GBV in the spirit of Women's Day. The initiative was hosted by Manzimankulu Women and Children, and the Njabulo Substance Prevention Centre. Organiser, Poppy Lekola, said the event aimed to empower women, provide them with resources, and promote a sense of collective strength in a community facing the widespread issue of GBV. 'Women's Day is about us and for us. We wanted to create a space where every woman in our community can feel heard, understood, and safe,' she said. She highlighted that many abused women in the community are afraid to speak out because they fear judgment. She said however, they wanted to build a network of support so no woman feels alone in her struggle against abuse. 'We wanted to strengthen the sisterhood support system that we are supposed to be.' She emphasised that women should not only gather on Women's Day to support one another. 'Women don't experience abuse on this day only, some have to endure it every day of their lives. It is important that as women, we remain a beacon of hope and safety for our sisters all the time,' she said. WATCH: GBV life coach and counsellor, Nthabiseng Masilela, emphasised the critical need for such initiatives. 'Survivors of GBV and those affected by it really do need such programmes, because they are a space where they feel comfortable to share their stories without feeling judged,' she said. She added that said such initiatives help survivors begin their healing journey. 'When women gather and unite like this, they are able to share important information about their rights and available support services while supporting each other,' she said. The event also provided a platform for women who have experienced GBV to share their stories. The aim was to promote shared understanding and break the silence surrounding the abuse of women. Lorraine Tshabuse shared her experience of being in an abusive marriage, saying, 'I stayed in an abusive marriage for over eight years, suffering in silence, but my journey to healing started the day I decided to speak out. 'To all women in abusive relationships, know that you are not to blame. Your story is valid, and we are here as your sisters waiting to support you.' Heideveld community rallies against gun violence after tragic shooting of a witness
A 30-year-old woman was gunned down in Heideveld on Saturday morning — just a kilometre from Phoenix Secondary School in Manenberg, where police and community leaders were launching an initiative to 'silence the guns.' 'That might be the reason she was shot and killed,' said Manenberg Community Police Forum deputy chairperson Vanessa Adriaanse The shooting on 5th Street at about 11:15am, close to Phoenix Secondary School happened a kilometre away from the venue for the Western Cape police board's anti-gun campaign launch. The #SilencingTheGun campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the devastating impact of illegal firearms. Adriaanse said the shooting took place while community members, mostly women, were gathered for the campaign launch in honour of Women's Day. 'This is devastating, to think that we were launching the silencing the guns campaign where we mostly invited females because it's Women's Day. We wanted to acknowledge the women on the Cape Flats. Western Cape police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said the circumstances and motive of the shooting form part of the investigation 'Manenberg SAPS registered a murder case for investigation after a 30-year-old woman was shot and fatally wounded during a drive-by shooting this morning, Saturday, 9 August 2025, at about 11:15am in 5th Street, Heideveld. The suspects are yet to be identified and apprehended.' Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application. Western Cape Deputy provincial police commissioner Luyanda Damoyi described the circulation of illegal firearms in the areas as 'tremendous'. 'Many of the firearms currently in circulation were once legally owned, but after certain incidents involving the owners, such as robberies at their homes, they became illegal. Some have been lost by security forces or stolen from security companies, and others from the South African Police Service. 'What we are doing now is taking measures to address this. We are regularly inspecting firearm licences held by owners. One area of concern is deceased estates. For example, if someone owned three firearms and then died, their family might not report this to the police. We have identified 1,502 firearms linked to deceased owners, and we are visiting those addresses. We have already recovered a number of weapons in different provinces.' Cape Times
