Dangerous dog attack owners defend their pets

BBC News15-04-2025

The owners of dogs that have attacked humans and other pets have said they "saw the beauty" in their animals and wanted to give them a second chance. The number of incidents where an out of control dog has caused injury has risen sharply over the past five years.Rob Chant from Bishopsworth in Bristol took ownership of a Bullmastiff in January. After having the dog, which he named Handsome, for just three days it lost control and began mauling a neighbours' dog. Mr Chant was injured himself by the dog as he tried to intervene and still has a crooked finger as a result of the incident.
Caution: Graphic description of violence
He said: "He was brought up to fight, so his ears are clipped, his tail's clipped so... he's gone jogging it round the corner, gone straight into her (his neighbour's) hallway and he's grabbed her dog and ripped all his leg open. "I panicked, I dived on top of him, and as I grabbed him he's bit down and bit into me fingers, I've grabbed his cheeks. So he's grabbed that finger on one side and done that finger on another side. I'm bleeding all over the place, I've managed to drag him out."The neighbour called the police and her dog had to be put down because of its injuries.Mr Chant said the police told him he would also have to put his own dog down because of what it did, or face prosecution. He found a vet who carried out the procedure for free.
'Big scrap'
Claire Garraway from Withywood in Bristol owns three dogs including a female rottweiler which attacked her 25-year-old son in her home.Ms Garraway said: "My two sons were having a big scrap and she could hear all the commotion behind the door, she didn't know who it was so she automatically bit my son on the bum and he went to hospital and had a tetanus jab."She said: "I was unhappy that she done that obviously but I didn't want to get rid of her or put her down because she's never done anything like that before, and I think the commotion was so much she was doing it out of protection of me."
According to the government, dogs are considered dangerously out of control if they injured people, or made people concerned they were about to be attacked.Penalties included unlimited fines, six months' imprisonment, or both, and offenders might be banned from owning dogs in the future. Allowing a dangerous dog to kill someone could lead to 14 years' imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both.
'Deserve a chance'
Despite Mr Chant's experiences, he said he did not regret buying a dog breed known for fighting.Mr Chant said: "I can see the beauty in him… they deserve a chance. "Alright they were brought up to clip their ears and get in there and fight and win some money, they were brought up like that. "If they come out of that and nobody wants them any more because they're like that they deserve a chance for them to pull back, that's only fair. "And if they don't, then yeah put them down," he said.
Jenny and Colin Coombes from Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset adopted a Romanian border collie rescue dog which they named Cwtch. He bit a builder who was working in their home.Ms Coombes said: "He lunged and he nipped. We made sure the guy went to hospital and he was okay about it."The couple were worried it might happen again.Ms Coombes added: "We did debate returning him to the home, the dogs home that we got him from and they helped us over that they were very good and they supported us and offered us extra training and we got through it. "It was our fault because we were at that stage where we were still inexperienced with handling a dog like that and we just allowed the dog to get a little bit too close to the guy."Ms Coombes said she believed dog attacks were not always the owners' fault. She said: "Sometimes, especially with a rescue dog it can be a dog that's got problems and got issues."
Victims of dog attacks have told the BBC how they have been affected afterwards.Judy Champion was walking home in West Somerset when an elderly man with three dogs parked alongside her."As I passed, the dog shot out [of the car] and grabbed onto my leg," she said. Her wound was bandaged up and she was given a tetanus shot and a course of penicillin to resist against any infections.Mrs Champion is also a dog owner herself and said the experience had left her wary of other people's pets."I'm not scared of dogs," she said. "But now I'm looking out for dogs all the time even though I have two of my own."The owner of the dog that bit Mrs Champion could not be identified so no action was taken.

Sick moment vile yob shouts ‘f*** foreigners' while setting family's home on FIRE in ‘racist' riot carnage

THIS is the vile moment yobs shouted "f*** foreigners" while setting a family's home on fire in "racist" riot carnage. Hundreds gathered on the streets of Ballymena in Northern Ireland on Wednesday facing police armed with riot shields and water cannon on the third night of anti-immigrant demonstrations. 7 This is the vile moment yobs shouted 'f*** foreigners' while setting a family's home 7 A man filming the scenes on his phone can be heard screaming 'f*** the foreigners' 7 Video footage emerged on social media today showing masked thugs stoking a fire in a kitchen Video footage emerged on social media today showing masked thugs breaking into a house and stoking a fire in the kitchen. It is unclear who the property belonged to, but a man filming the scenes on his phone can be heard screaming "f*** the foreigners". He grabs a kettle and while thrusting it into the air in front of a group of thugs, he shouts "yes! f*** the foreigners". The protests erupted in the northern town of Ballymena after the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared Monday in court, where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday and Tuesday included neighbourhoods where Romanian migrants live. Ministers from every party in the province's power-sharing executive strongly condemned "the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days". Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the unrest in Ballymena "mindless violence". Around 20 miles southeast of the town, masked men set a leisure centre in Larne on fire. The centre was temporarily sheltering people from Ballymena who had been evacuated. Some people fixed signs to their houses indicating they were Filipino residents, or hung up British flags. Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill, the Sinn Fein vice-president, called the violence "abhorrent". The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said in a statement that its officers "came under sustained attack over a number of hours with multiple petrol bombs, heavy masonry, bricks and fireworks in their direction". Some of the injured officers required hospital treatment. Police Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson on Tuesday denounced the violence as "racist thuggery" and said it was "clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police". 7 Larne Leisure Centre came under attack and was set on fire in the evening Credit: X / @TheNorfolkLion 7 A sticker with a Philippines flag and the words 'Filipino lives here' on a house Credit: Reuters 7 Fireworks were shot at the police barricade as the unrest unfolded Credit: AFP

Police Scotland officers sent to Northern Ireland amid disorder in Ballymena

An undisclosed number of public order officers will leave Scotland on Thursday after days of amid anti-immigration riots. Officers from Police Scotland will be sent to Northern Ireland today amid anti-immigration riots in Ballymena. The force has responded to pleas from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for support following violent scenes in the County Antrim town. The deployment will involve an undisclosed number of public order officers who are trained to police civil unrest. ‌ They will leave Scotland on Thursday. It comes after three nights of pandemonium in Northern Ireland following an alleged sexual assault in Ballymena at the weekend. ‌ Two teenage boys, both aged 14, were charged with attempted rape following the alleged incident, which reportedly happened in the Clonavon Terrace area of on Saturday evening. The pair pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted oral rape at Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Monday morning. They relied on a Romanian interpreter for communication. By Monday night, the situation escalated dramatically with throngs converging around the town's police station and Clonavon Terrace - in close proximity to where the alleged assault happened. Footage on social media shows protestors torching road barriers and bins as part of a barricade on the street. ‌ It's understood that at least four houses were set ablaze during the disorder. ‌ Unrest spread to other towns on Tuesday and Wednesday, including Coleraine and Larne – where the leisure centre was set on fire by masked vandals who also smashed windows. Officers responded with water cannon, dogs and plastic baton rounds in an attempt to disperse crowds, however, they were met with petrol bombs, a hatchet and masonry. ‌ A total of 32 PSNI officers have been left injured as a result of the ugly scenes. Three teenagers have been charged following the disorder. One man, aged 18, and two teenage boys, aged 15 and 17, have been charged with riot. ‌ The 15-year-old has also been charged with criminal damage. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn said: 'This not what Northern Ireland is about, this is not what we want the rest of the world to see. 'We all, as elected representatives, have a responsibility to seek to calm things down, to support those in the community trying to keep people safe, principally the PSNI, to work with community leaders to lower tensions. 'Whatever views people hold, there is no justification for trying to burn people out of their homes, that is what is going on, and that is what needs to stop because it is shocking and damaging, and it reflects very badly of the image of Northern Ireland that we all want to send to the rest of the world.'

A total of 32 PSNI officers have been injured since the protests over an alleged sexual assault began on Monday night. Last night (WED) unrest also spread to other towns. In Larne, masked youths attacked a leisure centre and set it on fire. The centre had been providing emergency shelter for families following the clashes earlier this week. The force's assistant chief constable, Ryan Henderson, said they would be "surging a significant number of extra officers" into affected areas. He described the violence as "racist thuggery targeted at ethnic minorities and police officers". The force confirmed the deployment, but declined to comment further. Mutual aid agreements are uncommon and are generally "incident based," according to the National Police Chiefs' Council. ACC Henderson said: "As part of my forward planning I have now activated the request for mutual aid resources from policing colleagues in Great Britain to ensure we have the necessary support to maintain public order and bring offenders to justice in the days to come."
