AFL match stopped 26 seconds in after Hayden McLean knocked out cold

7NEWS4 days ago
Sydney big man Hayden McLean has been stretchered off the ground just 26 seconds into his side's clash with crosstown AFL rivals GWS.
The forward/ruck clashed heads with Giants defender Jack Buckley as he flew for a mark inside the Swans' forward 50 just moments after the first bounce.
Both players came down heavily, but McLean was knocked out cold as the game stopped and he drew immediate concern.
Buckley also appeared to hold his head in pain but was able to get up and shake it off.

AFL finally making move to stamp out gut punches

The AFL's new football boss Greg Swann is on a mission to stamp out gut punches. The ugly off-the-ball act — where are a player whacks another player in the stomach — has long being tolerated in the league, with players only receiving a slap on the wrist when caught. But it is a blight on the game, it looks dirty, and Swann has had enough. 'Guys punching guys in the guts — give them a week (suspension),' Swann said on SEN on Tuesday. 'It probably has stopped a little bit (this year) but if we did (banned players) then it stops completely.' Swann said it was poor looked and was copied by lower leagues and younger players. 'Everything that happens at the elite level filters down to the juniors and you just don't want those things,' he said. Swann also has the sub rule in his sights. 'Clubs don't like it. We'll have a look at that,' he said. 'It will be about the stats again, if you lose players in the first or second quarter and how that affects your ability to win games. 'Does that change if you've got four on the bench or five? 'I think we'll have a look at that.' Swann also wants to clean up free kicks in the ruck, and get the ruckmen jumping at the ball again. 'I've been really impressed by the amount of data in the AFL. In the centre bounce ruck contest, only one in 5 is a jump. The other four (contests), they walk across the line and wrestle,' Swann said on Triple M's Mick in the Morning. AFL great Nick Riewoldt then asked Swann if he would like to see ruck aerial work make a comeback. 'I think so. I don't think it's good for the game (to lose the ruck jump),' he said 'When they do cross the line and grab each other, it's like chook lotto when they blow the whistle, 'Who is getting the free?' ... because they're both wrestling, they're both holding, and I think it's going to stop. 'That's something we're going to look at. 'As a code, we haven't been strong in communicating what's going on. So, let's put the stuff out there: if we make a decision, let's explain it – if we get something wrong, let's own up to it.' Changes to the father-son rule and academy bidding have also been flagged by the new footy boss, as well as making games shorter.

Greene laments seeing red in disciplinary 'slip-up'

Toby Greene thought he was past the disciplinary lapses that marred the start of his career. But now the GWS captain concedes that's not the case after a "slip-up" forearm to the back of Sydney star Isaac Heeney's head. It's led to his suspension for Thursday night's crunch clash with the Western Bulldogs. Greene's absence is a huge blow to the sixth-placed Giants (52 points) who are chasing a top-four spot, against the finals-hunting Bulldogs (ninth, 44 points). "I was just probably highly emotional and got don't argued sensationally by Isaac and then did what I did - which if I had my time back, I would love it back, but that's not possible," Greene told the Ausmerican Aces podcast. "There was a bit going both ways and and I probably let that get the better of me in terms of getting emotional and pretty wound up. "I've been guilty of it previously in my career, and it was certainly a slip-up and something I'd like to have my time back but you obviously don't. "I'd like to learn my lesson, and I thought I was almost past that, but clearly not. So, mate, a bit to work on." When asked what he made of people who would consider him a dirty player, Greene, 31, said: "It's probably fair enough". "What I did was pretty dirty, and I've done that in my career, but I mean, I don't go out there premeditating anything," he said. "It's just something I need to get better at in my game ... I've just got to worry about making sure I'm playing every weekend." Greene also avoided suspension for swinging a foot, which didn't make contact, towards the groin of Sydney defender Dane Rampe - an incident which came to light after his podcast interview. Midfielder Stephen Coniglio will captain the Giants with Greene and Josh Kelly (injury) unavailable. He noted his skipper had generally managed his aggression in recent years, with the "turning point" around five years ago when Greene's teammates made it clear they considered him a leader. "Whenever he's walked the line he's made some really good decisions in the last couple of years and it's fuelled a couple of our really good performances," Coniglio said. "And so we just need more of those decisions."

Geelong coach Chris Scott set to sign contract extension until end of 2029

Chris Scott is set to rule himself out of becoming the inaugural Tasmanian coach and sign a contract extension at Geelong. The two-time premiership coach is on the verge of inking a new deal through to the end of 2029, according to Channel 7's Caroline Wilson. Scott was already contracted until the end of next season, but will soon sign the blockbuster extension. He is not the only big name to recommit to the club with Wilson also reporting CEO Steve Hocking also extending until the end of 2029. 'They've both attracted interest elsewhere, but we can report tonight that the Geelong board have just extended Steve Hocking's contract until the end of 2029,' Wilson said on The Agenda Setters. 'So that's a four-year new contract for the former AFL football boss who went back to Geelong and was with Chris Scott for that flag a couple of years ago. 'Chris Scott has not yet made an announcement, nor do I think it's been signed, but he will extend his deal, which currently runs to the end of next year, also to the end of 2029.' Wilson also reported Scott will get a big pay rise next year in the line with the expanded soft cap rules. 'He'll also get a pay rise next year, even though he's contracted because, of course, the soft cap, as we know, has been expanded,' she continued. 'So this is already one of the greatest partnerships in football at what is now looming as probably the most stable footy club.' Scott, who has won the most games as coach this century, was courted by Tasmania to be the Devils' inaugural coach. He spoke with CEO Brendan Gale and met with board member Alastair Lynch. But he will continue his stint as Geelong coach for a record-extending 19th season if he remains in charge for 2029. Already the record-holder for most games coached at Geelong, Scott was delivered the club two premierships (2011 and 2022). He has the Cats well-placed for another tilt this year as they sit in fourth place with four rounds left in the season. With Scott now off Tasmania's list, Wilson believes former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is now their No.1 target. The Magpies great has already publicly declared his interest in becoming the inaugural coach. Tasmania have been slated to enter the AFL in 2028, but there are still a few hurdles to clear before it becomes official.
