Man accused of hammer attack in East Boston to undergo competency evaluation
Eric Vargas, of East Boston, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident on Tuesday, police said in a statement.
A judge set a $5,000 bail for Vargas during his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court in East Boston, court records show. Vargas will also undergo a competency evaluation, and was committed to Bridgewater State Hospital.
At around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a man walked into the Boston Police station in East Boston and reported he had been attacked by a man with a hammer earlier that morning, police said.
The man told police that at around 6:30 a.m., when he was walking into a bakery at 40 Maverick Square, a man he didn't know walked up to him and asked him to use his phone. The man said he didn't have one and walked into the bakery, police said.
When the man left the bakery, police say the other man, later identified as Vargas, hit him in the head with a hammer.
The man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby health center, police said.
Officers on patrol found Vargas sitting on the steps of a building on Paris Street at around 5:16 p.m. Wednesday, and arrested him after 'further investigation,' police said.

A federal judge in Boston has sentenced a Natick roofer to one year in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to tax evasion. U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy on Tuesday, Aug. 12, also sentenced Jake Miller, 42, to one year of supervised release. Murphy also ordered Miller to pay $449,329 in restitution. Miller pleaded guilty in February to one count of tax evasion. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Miller owned Kostas Roofing, which he ran under an alias of Paul Kostas. From 2013 to 2021, Miller deposited money earned from his roofing business into a personal bank account rather than a business account. He did not file income taxes during those years, despite receiving at least $1.6 million. The U.S. Attorney's Office determined Miller should have paid nearly $450,000 in taxes as a result of that unreported income. More than $100,000 in jewelry bought with fake money by 2 men at Boston jewelry store, DA says
A Tennessee man was arrested after police said he used fake money to buy more than $100,000 in jewelry from a store in Boston. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney, 20-year-old Devin Johnson and another man purchased numerous pieces of jewelry from Victoria Jewelry on Temple Place in Downtown Crossing back in April. They allegedly bought a rose gold and diamond bracelet worth $15,000, a rose gold and diamond chain worth $50,000, two Rolex watches worth $45,000 and $23,000 and a gold and diamond tennis chain worth $30,000. The items together were worth $160,000 An employee of Victoria Jewelry told police he had made contact with one of the men via Instagram and text message, who told him he wanted to purchase the items. The two men allegedly paid in cash and two days later, store employees put the cash through a money counter and learned it was fake. Detectives said the bills had "In Prop We Trust" written on them and were similar to money used on movie sets or for toys. Johnson and the other were identified through video surveillance. Detectives said they also tracked social media pages used by the men, which featured photos and videos of them displaying the items identical to those purchased at Victoria Jewelry. In one Instagram post, the second man allegedly displayed a watch and tagged Johnson with the caption, "We made history bro." Johnson was arraigned on July 22 on one count of larceny over $1,200. He was released on personal recognizance and told to stay away from Victoria Jewelry. He's due back in court on Sept. 23 for a pretrial hearing. The second man has yet to be arraigned. "The facts here outline an incredibly audacious scheme to purchase real jewelry—and hugely expensive jewelry at that—with phony money, which eventually came undone through thorough, tenacious work by Boston police detectives. These suspects, like so many others, may have thought they got away with something. Like so many others, they thought wrong," said Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden in a statement.

Hyde Park shooting leaves 2 people wounded, one detained by Boston Police
Boston Police shut down a street in Hyde Park late Wednesday morning after two people were shot. One of them was critically wounded. Another person has been detained by police. Officers were called to Farraday Street just after 10 a.m. for a report of a person shot. But when they arrived, they found two people with "multiple gunshot wounds," according to a police spokesperson. "At least one victim sustained injuries believed to be life-threatening. Officers rendered aid to both victims on scene until the arrival of Boston EMS. The victims were then transported to local hospitals for further treatment," police said in a statement. "Due to the severity of the injuries, Boston Police Homicide Detectives responded and are leading the investigation. At this time, a person believed to be involved in the incident has been detained. The investigation remains active and ongoing." Investigators have not released any information about the victims. Police at the scene were very focused on a car that was parked in the street with its front end nearly on the sidewalk. Officers left more than a dozen evidence markers in and around the car. It's not clear yet if the shooting happened inside or outside the vehicle. A woman later told WBZ-TV the car belongs to her cousin and she has not been able to reach her. Neighbors told WBZ they didn't see or hear anything unusual this morning. No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
