Stuart Greenhalgh reports on activities in the Mid Cheshire crown green bowling scene…
CASTLE Sports cemented themselves at the top of the Mid Cheshire Crown Green Bowling League Premier Division with a full house at home to Owley Wood B.
It was a tough night for Owley Wood as they were on the wrong side of a 210-90 scoreline.
Frodsham Red Lion A jumped to second place by beating Castle Sports B 205-108.
Crewe PO had a good night against Owley Wood A, beating the home team 174-200.
Wharton cons A had a tricky time on the artificial surface at Helsby, narrowly winning 175-178.
In Section One, Victoria remained top with a comfortable 154-195 away win against Tarporley A.

Barnton A had their first home match in Section One, winning 207-131 against Castle Sports C.
Kingswood BC had a full house at home to Middlewich RBL A, winning the match 210-126.
In Section Two, after two games, Sandbach Park head the table by 10 points from Castle Sports D.
Section Three sees Barnton CC C lead the way by 17 points, although second-placed Owley Wood D remain unbeaten.
With there being an odd number of teams in Section Three, resulting each week in one team having a bye, it means some teams have only played one match.
In Section Four, Cuddington hold top spot 18 points in front of Winnington B.
Meanwhile, it was a tough outing for the Cheshire county side on Sunday.
The home game was played at Castle Sports and Cheshire had eight winners in a 223-195 win over the Potteries.
But, away on the artificial surface at Biddulph Bowling & Recreation club, Cheshire had to wait until the last two games to pick up a couple of wins with Neal Ocego returning a 21-12 card and Jason Cornes coming out on top 21-20.

Paul Drinkwater, on his debut, just lost out 21-20 to Lee Brown.
With 10 winners, the Potteries won their home leg 242-197 to secure the overall victory.
Sunday's Federation match is against East Lancs.
Interestingly, the Mid Cheshire team will contain many of the players from both county sides of Cheshire versus the Potteries - one Sunday they are fighting for every point against each other, the following Sunday they are teammates.
The home leg for Mid Cheshire Fed is at Alsager and the match starts at 2.30pm. Your support would be appreciated.
My apologies to Mid Cheshire ladies for missing the start of your season.
After two matches, Division One sees Castle Sports Ladies holding top spot 13 points ahead of Frodsham Red Lion.
Third place Norley are ahead of fourth place Winnington Ladies by just one point.

BOWLING: League news, Littler Cup, Brunner Cup, Mid Cheshire Ladies County, Rudheath
Stuart Greenhalgh brings us another update from the crown green bowling scene in Mid Cheshire… THE last 16 of the Cheshire County League's Brunner Cup was played on Saturday and three Mid Cheshire teams progressed to the quarter finals. They are Castle Sports, Wharton Cons and Rudheath. Results: Lever Club 225-206 Wilmslow BC, West Kirby Victoria 241-157 Victoria, Macclesfield BC 212-201 Winnington, Houldsworth WMC 233-191 Lloyd Hotel, Castle Sports A 245-188 Frodsham Red Lion, Wharton Cons 252-121 Barnton CC, Rudheath Bowls 221-193 Manor Road, Packhorse BC 223-192 Mersey Valley A. Meanwhile, the quarter-finals of the Littler Cup have been decided with matches to be played on Thursday, May 29 at venues still to be decided. Draw: Frodsham Red Lion B v Wharton Cons A, Castle S&SC A v Comberbach A, Victoria A v Meadowbank, Lk Graylams v Owley Wood B. In the Mid Cheshire League, Crewe PO, in first place in the premier after being unbeaten in three games, went away to second place Castle Sports A. It was not going to be a great night for the Crewe team on a superb looking green. The first four struggled on a very quick green, with Castle taking all four games with only one Crewe player hitting double figures. The second four and the last two from Crewe had a slightly easier time as the green slowed as the match went on. It was only in the 10th match though that Crewe got a win. Castle Sports won 203-124 to take over top spot, pushing Crewe PO down to fifth place. Only two sides remain unbeaten in the Premier now - Wharton Cons A and Rudheath A. Rudheath, after three straight wins, found themselves at home to Castle Sports B and their 210-146 victory pushed them up to second place. Over the last few years Rudheath have been improving steadily. Will this be the year they break into the top three? Wharton Cons A produced a great score at Owley Wood A, where they had only one loser. Wharton pushed themselves to third place courtesy of winning 102-198. Next time out, Rudheath travel to Wharton Cons so one of these two teams' unbeaten run will end. The remaining games in the Premier saw Frodsham beat Helsby A 194-139 at home, while Shavington secured a 204-157 home success against Owley Wood B. Comberbach A bagged an away win against Victoria B 169-174. In Section One, Victoria A came out on top at Barnton CC A. Victoria held on to the top spot thanks to their narrow 186-178 victory. Barnton are in second place and these two teams are being tipped to play in the Premier next year. Third place Frodsham Red Lion B played at Wharton Cons B, with the home side grabbing the win 193-171. Rudheath Bowls B had a convincing win against Meadowbank 199-127. Kingswood BC pocketed an impressive home win against Castle sports C 206-100. The final game in the section saw Comberbach B register a home win against Tarporley A 183-171. In Section Two, unbeaten Moulton RBL A lead the table from Barnton CC B, who lost at Helsby B 170-163. Moulton won 158-180 at Middlewich RBL B. Over in Section Three and Barton CC C top the division from Wharton Rec A. Barton C achieved a good home win 201-141 against Owley Wood C, while Wharton lost at Crowton, 192-154. It was week three in the Mid Cheshire Ladies League first division and Castle maintained the top spot with a win at Lady Owls 151-118. In second place Red Lion Ladies, the only unbeaten team in the division, triumphed at Winnington Ladies 154-119. Barnton A, who are in third place, had a commanding home victory against Rudheath SSC 168-68. Mid Cheshire Ladies County started their campaign against Staffordshire. The away match at Florence Bowling Club started with three home winners for Staffordshire, plus Paula Gammon winning for Mid Cheshire 21-12 giving the home side a 75-52 lead. In the second four at Florence, again Mid Cheshire just had the one winner - Carly Williams, 21-12. This left Mid Cheshire trailing 150-113. A much better last four gave Mid Cheshire two winners, Sophie Riley 21-19 and Dot Barker 21-5, which left the final 216-187 in Staffordshire's favour. The home leg was at Castle Sports, where it was extremely hot and the green fast. (Image: Contributed) (Image: Contributed) Before the game started there was a very poignant one-minute silence for long-standing Ladies county player Elaine Garner, who was an excellent bowler mostly for the away team. Elaine sadly passed away in December, 2024, and will be sadly missed by all. Mid Cheshire's first four all won at Castle. Sue Worrall was the best winner at 21-3, with Nicola Boulton and Viv Raddy winning to 14. The last game in the first four was a mighty tussle, with both players - after they had grasped the pace – producing some great bowls. Tamsin Birkett won 21-20 to leave Mid Cheshire in front at 84-51. In the middle four, Mid Cheshire extended their lead with three winners - Carole Latham, Dawn Nield and Hazel Williams all winning while Janet Salmon picked up Staffordshire's first win. After the middle four, Mid Cheshire led 160-112. The last four and Mid Cheshire had their second loss but picked up three more winners thanks to Debbie Williams, Alisha Marshall and Stacey Linegar Orange, who was the equal best winner of the day 21-3. Stacey was also presented with the player-of-the-match award, while Mid Cheshire bowler Dot Barker won the away award. Mid Cheshire won the home leg 234-158 and won the match overall 421-374, which is a great start. North Derbyshire will be next up. Saturday was the final night of Rudheath Spring Open. Three bowlers that play in the Mid Cheshire League were involved, namely Andy Hamman, Ant Lloyd and Tom Vickers. The first round we lost Hamman, who just missed out 21-20. Losers in the last sixteen got £75. In the last eight Ant Lloyd bowed out 21-16 and Vickers was defeated by Kery Morris. Losers in the last eight received £150. The semi finals matched Dan Petcher and Ryan Walters, with Walters winning 21-16. The second semi-final pitted Kerry Morris with Matt Gilmore and it was the latter who won 21-14. Losing semi-finalists received £300. Matt Gilmore (Image: Contributed) Gilmore went on to win the match and the £1,200 first prize 21-13, with runner-up Walters taking home £600.

'Nothing anyone could do' to prevent fatal crash
'Nothing anyone could do' to prevent fatal crash Motorbike racer Morgan McLaren-Wood, who was injured in the crash which killed two fellow riders on Monday, says "there was nothing anyone could do" to prevent the tragedy. England's Owen Jenner, 21, and New Zealander Shane Richardson, 29, were fatally injured when 11 riders crashed during the British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park in Cheshire. Another rider, Tom Tunstall, suffered a broken bone in his neck while five riders, including McLaren-Wood, sustained minor injuries and three escaped unharmed. "I was maybe a row behind Shane and Owen, maybe five or six bikes behind them - maybe a bit more," McLaren-Wood, who suffered a sprained wrist and bruising around his back and knee, told BBC Sport. "It was just chaos - there was nothing anyone could do. There were bikes everywhere. There was nowhere for anyone to go - it's such a tight track and there's not really any run-off on it either." Richardson and McLaren-Wood forged a relationship in their homeland of New Zealand before both moved to the UK. McLaren-Wood said his compatriot helped him adjust to living in England and was always happy to offer advice about racing and life in general. Richardson was a joiner since the age of 16 and ran a joinery business alongside his racing career. He and his partner Hannah James have two children, Maddie and Max. "Shane was such a lovely guy. After every race he'd always have a chat back in the pits, he'd ask me how my race went, I'd ask about his and he'd give me advice on how to get better and where to improve," McLaren-Wood said. "He was such a loving dad. I can't imagine what they're going through right now, it's so sudden and unexpected." McLaren-Wood said he did not know Jenner "as much as I would have liked". Jenner, from Crowborough in East Sussex, started his racing career in Junior Motorcross before progressing to the tarmac. He won the 2018 Team Green, 2020 Junior Supersport and 2023 Junior Superstock titles. Jenner joined the Kramer Team for the 2024 British GP2 season, winning the title with 18 wins out of 20 race finishes. 'Always ways to improve safety in elite sport' Fatalities are rare in motorbike racing, but unfortunately not unheard of. British Superbikes rider Chrissy Rouse died after a crash at Donington Park in 2022. Superbikes can reach speeds of up to 200mph, and the bikes used in Supersport regularly clock well in excess of 100mph. Former rider and MLav Racing owner Michael Laverty told BBC Sport that the riders were probably reaching speeds of "about 90 to 100mph" when they crashed on the opening corner of Oulton Park on the first lap. McLaren-Wood, who races for Josh Davis Motorsport By UGGLY & Co Kawasaki, expects the incident to impact some of the riders, but insisted they all enter the sport knowing the risks. "I think it will affect a few people," McLaren-Wood said. "Most of us out there know it's the sport we love to do and we will go out there fighting again, and avoid anything like that happening again." Motorsport Vision Racing (MSV), who are responsible for circuit operations at Oulton Park, and the Motorcycle Racing Control Board (MCRCB) said on Monday they are "investigating the full circumstances of the incident in conjunction with the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary". "I think there are always ways to improve in safety in elite sport," McLaren-Wood said when asked what the sport could learn. "Maybe there were too many riders out there, I don't really know. I'm not a safety expert, but I think it was mostly a tragedy." The Oulton Park event marked the beginning of the 2025 British Superbikes season, with a further seven rounds set to take place across the UK before three 'showdown' events. The Supersport Championship is a support class to the main British Superbike series. The next event of the British Supersport Championship season takes place at Donington Park on 16-18 May.
