A structurally weak iron-and-concrete footbridge over the Indrayani river that had been declared unfit for use but not officially shut to pedestrians and bikes collapsed Sunday about 40km from Pune, killing four people and injuring 51, eight of them critically. One person was reported missing after falling into the rain-fed river at Bhegdewadi, just over a kilometre from the picturesque Kunda Mala vista that attracts hordes of tourists. More than a 100 people were on the footbridge when a portion of the structure gave way close to the stone bank of the river around 3.30pm, state minister for water resources and disaster management Girish Mahajan said. The footbridge connecting Shelarwadi, close to the old Pune-Mumbai highway, with Kanhewadi near Indori is a vantage point for people visiting the area at this time of year to enjoy the surroundings."The crowd on the bridge was beyond its capacity. There is a signboard warning people against standing on the bridge, but it seems everyone ignored it," Mahajan said.Umakant Dalvi, a survivor, said the bridge was so crowded that there was no space for anyone to move. "There were also some bikes on it, which made it worse. Everyone started running towards the main road as the structure heaved and collapsed," he said. Pimpri Chinchwad DCP Vishal Gaikwad identified three of the victims as Chandrakant Sathle, Rohit Mane and Vihan Mane. The identity of the fourth victim wasn't immediately known.Eight of the 51 injured were discharged from hospital after treatment. The Maharashtra govt announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, fire brigade and other agencies used cranes to lift the collapsed iron structure to extricate two bodies by evening."We will resume the search for the other bodies and the missing person early on Monday," Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey said.PWD officials said the footbridge was built over three decades ago and handed over to the Pune Zilla Parishad, which remains responsible for its upkeep. The state govt recently sanctioned Rs 8 crore for the construction of a new bridge parallel to the existing one, with work scheduled to begin after the monsoon.Local authorities, including the village sarpanch, had flagged the bridge as unsafe.Kunda Mala is a popular weekend getaway, especially during monsoon, to witness the Indrayani waters cascading from a rocky area that gives it the effect of a waterfall. Barely a week ago, Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi passed an order listing several restrictions for people visiting rivers, lakes, waterfalls and other popular weekend spots during monsoon in Lonavla and other places in the district.CM Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who is also Pune's guardian minister, condoled the deaths in separate messages while ordering an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Eknath Shinde, the state's other deputy CM, said a structural audit of similar bridges across the state would be done soon.Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi told TOI, "A five-member committee will be constituted to investigate the bridge collapse."

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Trekker shares chilling last video of Raja Raghuvanshi with Sonam; wife's shirt matches one found near body

NEW DELHI: A video shared by a tourist on his Instagram account may offer crucial visual evidence in the shocking murder of Indore man Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. The video, accidentally recorded by traveler Dev Singh on May 23, shows Raja and his wife Sonam walking up the trail near the famous double-decker living root bridge in Nongriat — the day Raja is believed to have been murdered. Singh, who posted the video on July 15, wrote that he had only discovered the footage while reviewing clips from his trip to Meghalaya. 'It was around 9.45 in the morning. We were heading down when the couple was climbing up after staying overnight in Nongriat village. I think this was the last recording of them together,' Singh wrote. He added that Sonam was wearing a white shirt — the same one later found near Raja's body. Singh expressed grief as he watched Raja in the clip: 'He looked normal, completely unaware of what lay ahead.' He also mentioned having another video showing three more people from Indore, who began their trek 20 minutes before Raja and Sonam and were later picked up by police. Singh has appealed for the video to be forwarded to the Meghalaya Police and requested that it not be used without permission. The case so far Raja and Sonam got married on May 11 and travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20. On May 23, Raja went missing in the East Khasi Hills district. His body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Sohra (also known as Cherrapunjee). The investigation soon led to Raja's wife Sonam, who was detained from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, along with four others — her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and three suspected contract killers: Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. According to the Meghalaya Police, the murder conspiracy was planned in Indore earlier this year, even before the wedding. The police claim Raj Kushwaha was the mastermind, and Sonam was a willing accomplice. The hired attackers were reportedly close friends — one even a cousin of Kushwaha — and not professional killers. Police say they were paid Rs 50,000 to carry out the plan and cover travel expenses. The investigation suggests that Raja's murder was premeditated, with Sonam playing a key role in ensuring he was isolated and vulnerable during the trip. After the crime, she surfaced in Ghazipur and surrendered on June 9. The emergence of this new video may help Meghalaya Police further corroborate the timeline of events and tighten the case against the accused.

Watch: Monkey Steals Money From Tourist In Tamil Nadu, Then Does This

Kodaikanal: A monkey stole a bundle of Rs 500 notes from a man near Guna Caves in Kodaikanal, a famous tourist destination in Tamil Nadu, scaled a tree and then threw them from there. The animal snatched the money from a Karnataka tourist, who was reportedly carrying multiple bundles of 500-rupee notes. The monkey unexpectedly appeared, grabbed his backpack, and ran away. Sitting atop the tree, it pulled the notes out of the bag, observed and occasionally dropped one or two of them. A large crowd stood underneath the tree as mere spectators, capturing the monkey's theatrics on their phones. The traveller patiently waited; he and his friends collected the money as and when the animal dropped it. Even though other tourists assisted the group, some notes still fell into the river. This incident took place near the Guna cave area in the Dindigul district. The place gained popularity from the Tamil movie 'Guna' and recently made headlines again with the release of 'Manjummel Boys.' Since being mentioned in the film, the place has witnessed a notable increase in the arrival of tourists. A similar incident took place in early June when a monkey stole diamonds worth Rs 20 lakh from Aligarh-based diamond merchant Abhishek Agarwal's handbag during their visit to the Thakur Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. On June 6, after Agarwal and his family offered their prayers and were leaving for home, the animal suddenly snatched the bags containing the valuables from his hands. The terrified businessman tried everything to get the monkey's attention. But after all else failed, he turned to the police for assistance. Fortunately for the Agarwal family, a senior police official reported that after eight hours of work, the cops managed to corner the monkey and retrieve the bag.

KTR appears before ACB in Formula E race case

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and former Minister K.T. Rama Rao on Monday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the Formula E race case. Rama Rao reached the ACB office in Banjara Hills amid tight security for the second round of questioning in the case. Police made elaborate security arrangements around the ACB office to prevent any gathering of BRS workers. Speaking to the media before leaving for the ACB office, the BRS leader said he would not be scared even if he had to go to jail again. KTR, as Rama Rao is popularly known, said cases registered against him and the harassment in the name of notices would not deter him from questioning the Congress government. The former minister stated that he respects the law and judiciary and that truth will ultimately prevail. 'They have so far summoned me thrice. Even if they call me 30 times, I will appear,' he said. KTR slammed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, saying he drew sadistic pleasure by making BRS president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and former Minister T. Harish Rao appear before the Kaleshwaram Commission. 'Today, I have been summoned. They may arrest me. I went to jail in the past for the sake of Telangana. I am not scared if I have to go to jail once again. Not once, I am ready to go to jail 100 times,' he said. KTR said the Chief Minister has no courage to touch KCR's army of lakhs of cadres. He reiterated that the Chief Minister should come forward to undergo a lie detector test. 'We both have ACB cases against us. I am ready for a lie-detector test, are you ready?' he asked. Claiming that the Formula-E race boosted the image of Telangana, he alleged that the actions of the Revanth Reddy government were maligning the state. The BRS leader earlier visited the party headquarters, Telangana Bhavan, where a large number of party workers gathered to show solidarity with him. The ACB had earlier given notice to KTR to appear on May 28. The BRS leader, however, informed the agency that as he planned to leave for a foreign tour, he would appear before them after he returned. The former minister had appeared before the ACB on January 9 in the case relating to the conduct of the Formula E race in Hyderabad in January 2023, when the BRS was in power. The ACB in December last year booked a case against KTR, former Special Chief Secretary to the government, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department, Arvind Kumar and former Chief Engineer of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) B.L.N. Reddy for alleged Rs 54.88 crore irregularities in the Formula-E deal. The FIR was registered on a complaint by the Principal Secretary to the government, MA&UD department, M. Dana Kishore, who stated that foreign remittances were made without prior approvals of the relevant regulatory authorities, which resulted in an additional tax burden to HMDA to the tune of Rs 8.06 crore. The complainant also alleged that the payment was made while the Model Code of Conduct was in effect for the elections to the State Legislative Assembly without any prior approval of the Election Commission of India. The FIR was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).
