Lisbon girls cap perfect season
Feb. 18—Lisbon completed a perfect 19-0 girls basketball season with nonleague win over Alexandria Bay to highlight Saturdays NAC hardwood action.
In other girls action Harrisville downed Morristown in the West Division finale for both teams and Canton downed Brushton-Moira in nonleague action.
In boys basketball action Harrisville downed Heuvelton and Morristown bested Edwards-Knox in NAC West games.
MCS 62 — E-K 48: The Green Rockets (3-9) opened a 32-23 halftime lead and raced away with a 23-10 third quarter run where Caleb Butler and Ethan Simmons each scored eight points with a pair of 3-pointers. Butler finished with three 3s in a 21-point outing and Simmons finished with 14 points. Landen Morrow tallied 10 with a pair of 3s.
Sawyer Belisle and Wyatt Clement scored seven and six points and Roland Simmons added four.
Kale Geer went 11-12 at the free throw line scoring 21 points Jaxin White tallied 11 for E-K (0-12). Rounding out the Cougars' scoring was Cooper Allen (9), Aiden Keddy (4), Lincoln Averill (1) and Caleb Robinson (2).
Morristown won the JV game to finish at 12-5.
Harrisville 65 — Heuvelton 45: The Pirates (10-2) bounced back from back-to-back losses to Lisbon and broke away from a 25-24 halftime lead with a 26-9 third quarter surge. Joe Shepperd scored 10 of his game-high 31 points in the surge and Aiden Chartrand scored 16 of his 19 points.
Joe Schrodt knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter, Jackson Jenack added four points and Liam Winters and Damian Hoinara added three and one.
The Bulldogs (7-5) Colt McAllister, Parker Felt and Dylan Ashlaw all hit for two 3-pointers in 14-point, 12-point and eight-point efforts. Landyn Ashlaw, Cory Ethridge and Jude Spooner added five, four and two points.
Chat 64 — SRF 40: Jake Johnston scored 34 points with seven rebounds and 10 steals as the Bulldogs (16-0) completed a perfect NAC East season.
"We got to celebrate 10 seniors today. These kids have worked very hard and have developed over the years. We were able to jump out early and get everyone lots of minutes. Now we have to focus and get ready for sectionals," said Chateaugay Coach Jason LaPlante.
Zach Parmeter and Jake Reynolds tallied nine and eight points and Grant Locklin grabbed 10 rebounds and five steals.
Peter Arcadi scored 17 points for the Saints.
GIRLS HOOPS
Lisbon 65 — AB 35: The Golden Knights scored 19 points in the first quarter and were never headed in wrapping up a 19-0 season. Ali Bell netted four 3-pointers scoring 25 points Kylie Quinlan and Sophia Walker each tallied 10. Regan Pirie followed with eight and the LCS scoring was rounded out by: Avery LaPage (2), Alyssa Flack (2), Adia Richards (4), Averee Bouchey (2) and Jalen Backus (2).
Patti Bridgenbaker with 11 points and Julie Fassbauer with 10 led the Alexandria Bay offense.
"A regular season for the record books. The first undefeated regular season in LCS Basketball history. 19-0 and so much to be proud of for this group.
Monday starts the new season with more focus and bigger goals. Let's keep rolling," said Lisbon Coach Matt Russell.
Harr 40 — Morr 14: Harrisville (6-6) took a 2-0 lead after one quarter and both teams were stuck on four for the early stage of the second quarter. The Pirates continued the spurt ability they have shown all season limiting the Rockets two four points in the second quarter while scoring 13 after being sparked by a pair of 3-pointers by Ava Bearor.
The Pirates followed with a 15-6 run the third quarter where Jaylin Fayette scored five points. Fayette scored a game-high 13 points for the Pirates and Bearor finished with nine points on three 3s.
Addison Jackson with seven, Isabelle Miller with six and Katelyn Kobylanksi with five rounded out the scoring for the winners. Scarlett Ritchie scored seven points with tough finishes in the lane for the Rockets followed Makia Greene with four and Issy Woodcock with two.
The JV game produced a 33-31 thriller decided the buzzer when Harrisville's Olivia McCormick buried a 12-foot jumper under tight coverage. Morristown had pulled even on driving basket by Bracelyn McGaw off a pass from Kinley Lalonde.
Canton 50 — B-M 35: Canton (7-12) picked up a nonleague win to aid their momentum heading into the Class B field of the Section 10 Tournament to go along with valuable seeding points. Tessa Alquire scored 15 points and Ashley Aldous, Winnie Downs and Calie Klassen each scored 10 to lead the Knights who jumped out to a 15-5 lead and enjoyed a 13-4 run in the third.
Sarah Aldous and Lilly Abplanalp added four and two points.
Addisyn Mitchell and Choe Poirier led Brushton-Moira with 18 and 15 points.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) — Sean O'Malley lost a title fight that could have stamped him the true face of UFC and decided it was time for a makeover. O'Malley realized to truly be at his best — as a fighter, as a family man — he needed to make difficult lifestyle sacrifices to round himself into peak form. So he weeded out his bad habits. O'Malley said he's on a complete detox of all his vices. He's cleansed himself of scrolling social media, stopped the hours of gaming each day — though he dabbles a bit more in poker — and said he even quit smoking marijuana. The 30-year-old contender also ditched his trademark dyed hair. No more cornucopia of colors that turned his locks into rainbows or cotton candy tops. O'Malley sported brown, braided hair this week and had no plans to brighten it on Saturday night. O'Malley is all business as he trained for his 135-pound title fight against Merab Dvalishvili in the main event of UFC 316. O'Malley, with his flashy knockouts and flashier style that made him pop as a character in a sport currently devoid of over-the-top personality, was unbeaten in seven straight fights and held the UFC bantamweight championship when he fought Dvalishvili last September. Dvalishvili, a 34-year-old from the country of Georgia, won the belt in a convincing — though not aesthetically pleasing — unanimous decision over O'Malley. Dvalishvili (18-4) successfully defended the championship in January against Umar Nurmagomedov and is a slight betting favorite to win at the Prudential Center over O'Malley, per BetMGM Sportsbook. 'I'm ready for the best version of Sean O'Malley,' Dvalishvili said. He seems poised to get it if O'Malley truly has squashed his distractions in his personal life. 'I never felt like I was in a bad place, or sad place or dark place,' O'Malley said. 'I always felt pretty good. I always felt like I could feel better. Whether it helps the performance or not, I feel better. That's all that matters.' O'Malley and his wife recently welcomed their second child, a boy named Matteo, another defining moment where the fighter realized he had become almost addicted to his 'Suga' persona. His life is now 'slowed down' without the constant need to check his phone or the paranoia he said he felt from regular marijuana use. 'I'd catch myself driving, surfing Instagram, and it was like, what the (heck) am I doing?' he said. 'I'd be playing with my daughter, surfing X, and it's like, what am I doing here? I feel like just limiting those distractions definitely made me more present with the family. With training. With friends. In general.' He also found some solace in that fact that he's pretty good in UFC at rematches. O'Malley has two losses since his 2017 debut; to Marlon Vera in 2020 and he rebounded to beat him in March 2024 in 135-pound title fight, and to Dvalishvili. O'Malley fought Dvalishvili the first time with a torn labrum in his hip and needed surgery after the fight. 'He didn't get the best version of me,' O'Malley said. As for the clean hairstyle for this fight, well, that's more about convenience than purposely tamping down the 'Suga' character. 'I just didn't want to sit down for it,' he said. 'I love the pink hair. It's fun. But it's a process. I thought bringing back the OG hair would be pretty cool.' And if he wins, let the party begin? 'I've got to jet home at 3 a.m.,' he said. 'There's no after party this time. I'm going straight home.' Olympic medalist Harrison goes for UFC title Kayla Harrison says she keeps her Olympic gold medals in a sock draw. That's a bit too small of a holding spot for the UFC championship belt. Harrison will take it around her waist if she can knock off 135-pound champion Julianna Peña in the other signature bout of UFC 316. It was Harmon who encouraged Pyfer to join the wrestling team and showed his student kindness and a path toward a professional career that sparked interest in UFC. Harmon has been a staple at Pyfer's fights and Pyfer still returns to the school for pep rallies or other activities to 'get the kids hyped up.' 'He's always going to be somebody very special in my life,' Pyfer said. 'He's the guy that gave me the opportunity to pursue this career and be where I am now. Elks-Lions game features first CFL opening-week meeting of Canadian quarterbacks
It will be a historic CFL first Saturday night in Vancouver. The B.C. Lions will host the Edmonton Elks at B.C. Place in the season opener for both teams. This will mark the first opening week featuring two Canadian starting quarterbacks (B.C.'s Nathan Rourke, Edmonton's Tre Ford) since 1968 and the first time it's occurred in the same game. The 2025 season will kick off Thursday night with the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Saskatchewan Roughriders. On Friday night, the Toronto Argonauts begin their Grey Cup defence in Montreal versus the Alouettes before the Calgary Stampeders entertain the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday night. Also of note in Vancouver, B.C.'s Buck Pierce and Edmonton's Mark Kilam will make their CFL head-coaching debuts. Rourke, 27, of Victoria, rejoined the Lions last season following NFL stints with Jacksonville, New England, the New York Giants and Atlanta. He was the league's top Canadian in 2022 with B.C. Ford, also 27, was Edmonton's '22 first-round pick out of Waterloo. The Hec Crighton Trophy winner from Niagara Falls, Ont., was 9-9 in 18 starts over the last three years before signing an extension with the CFL club this off-season. Ford and Kilam are looking to lead Edmonton to the CFL playoffs for the first time since 2019. Lewis finished last season with touchdown catches in Edmonton's final eight games, leaving him two short of Terry Evanshen's league record. Veteran Trevor Harris gets the start for Saskatchewan, which is looking to improve upon last year's 5-4 home record and 4-3 mark versus East rivals. Pick: Saskatchewan. —- Toronto Argonauts versus Montreal Alouettes (Friday night) At Montreal, Davis Alexander begins his first full season as the Alouettes' starting quarterback. He was an impressive 4-0 last year while incumbent Cody Fajardo — who's now in Edmonton — was injured. Veteran Nick Arbuckle, last year's Grey Cup MVP. is slated to start for the new-look Argos, who begin their title defence without many of the faces that played prominent roles in last year's championship. Chad Kelly, the CFL's 2023 outstanding player, continues to recover from the serious leg injury he sustained in last year's East Division final. Pick: Montreal. —- Hamilton Tiger-Cats versus Calgary Stampeders (Saturday night) At Calgary, Hamilton starter Bo Levi Mitchell chases his first regular-season win at McMahon Stadium, where he played so many years with the Stampeders. A victory would be Mitchell's 100th in the CFL and come in his 141st career start, making him the fastest player in league history to achieve the milestone. Veteran Vernon Adams Jr. makes his first debut with the Stampeders, who are looking to return to the CFL playoffs after missing out last year for the first time since '04. Pick: Hamilton. —- Edmonton Elks versus B.C. Lions (Saturday night) At Vancouver, no one was busier this off-season than Edmonton general manager Ed Hervey, who added the likes of defensive linemen Jake Ceresna and Robbie Smith, defensive backs Royce Metchie and Tyrell Ford and offensive lineman David Beard. Conventional thinking suggests it will take time for the Elks to mesh. Both starting quarterbacks are athletic and dual threats.
