National Conference May Approach Supreme Court Over J&K Statehood Delay, Says Farooq Abdullah

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir acknowledged that his party is 'waiting patiently' for the Centre to fulfil its commitment regarding statehood
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah warned on Saturday that his party would approach the Supreme Court of India if there was any further significant delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing reporters in Kokernag after a party workers' meeting, Abdullah expressed the widespread local desire for an immediate resolution of their issues, which he said is hindered by the region's current union territory status.
Abdullah underscored that the local populace, particularly following the elections late last year, is eager for its demands to be met, including the desire to see its elected representatives, such as National Conference MLA Altaf Kaloo, take on ministerial roles. However, he noted that these aspirations cannot be realised until full statehood is restored. He expressed hope that the restoration of statehood would also return 'all the powers" previously enjoyed by the region.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir acknowledged that his party is 'waiting patiently" for the Centre to fulfil its commitment regarding statehood. However, he warned that if the central government 'takes a long time", the National Conference would have 'no option but to go to the Supreme Court".
Several mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are frustrated over the prolonged delay in reversing the 2019 decision that stripped the erstwhile state of its special status under Article 370 and bifurcated it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The Supreme Court, in its December 2023 verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370, had directed the Election Commission of India to take necessary steps to hold elections in the assembly by September 30, 2024, and urged the government to restore statehood at an early date. Despite the recent assembly elections, statehood remains elusive.

Farooq Abdullah warns Middle East conflict could trigger global economic crisis

Srinagar, June 23 (UNI) National Conference president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Monday warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could spiral into a global economic crisis if not contained. Expressing concern over US strikes on Iran, Abdullah said he hoped world powers were closely monitoring the situation. 'If this conflict escalates, the economic condition of every country will deteriorate. They should make efforts to stop it, and I pray they succeed . Our condition in India is also very bad,' Abdullah told reporters in Srinagar. The veteran leader said the United States has long maintained a policy of preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power. He also issued a stark warning to Arab nations, suggesting they could be next in line for similar attacks. 'All the Sunni countries oppose the attack on Iran, but they lack the courage to speak out. Today they think only Iran has been targeted, but I am warning them — one day, Israel will attack them too,' he said. 'They want their oil and gas. Israel is only standing in front while as America is standing right behind,' Abdullah added. On the domestic front, Abdullah strongly refuted media reports claiming that the Centre is considering restoring Jammu and Kashmir's statehood only after fresh elections under a new framework. He accused sections of the media of spreading misinformation. 'Statehood is the rightful claim of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is not a favour to them,' he asserted. In a separate development, Abdullah announced the formation of a Human Rights Wing within the National Conference. The wing will be headed by retired Justice Hasnain Masoodi, the sitting MLA from Pampore. He will be assisted by two other members yet to be named. UNI MJR BM

Odisha: Dharmendra Pradhan seeks Manohar Lal's intervention for timely release of 15th Finance Commission grants to ULBs

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday met Housing and Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to seek his intervention on the timely release of 15th Finance Commission grants to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Sambalpur and Deogarh for the year 2024-25. According to an official release from Dharmendra Pradhan's office, 'Union Education Minister and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Sambalpur Dharmendra Pradhan met Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal Khattar to seek his intervention towards ensuring timely release of 15th Finance Commission grants to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Sambalpur and Deogarh for the Financial Year 2024-25.' 'These funds are critical for carrying out essential developmental initiatives and completing a wide range of civic and infrastructure works, including improvement of roads, sanitation, urban beautification, health and wellness, among others in the region,' it said. It added that Pradhan also sought his cooperation for affordable housing projects, PM-SVANidhi, e-bus services and effective regional waste management mechanisms. Earlier in the day, Dharmendra Pradhan paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee on his 72nd death anniversary, remembering him as a visionary whose principles continue to shape the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the country. Highlighting Dr Mukherjee's role in advocating for a unified India, Pradhan reflected on his 1953 protest against dual systems in the country, which led to Mukherjee's brave entry into Jammu and Kashmir. 'For the BJP and the Jan Sangh, Syama Prasad Mukherjee was a visionary whose thoughts still guide the Bharatiya Janata Party and the country. Seventy-two years ago, in 1953, he raised an important issue while protesting that there cannot be two systems within one country. He believed that if India had two separate laws or systems, it could not truly be called united or independent. To prove his point, he risked his life and entered Jammu and Kashmir. That moment became a part of history,' Pradhan said. He further emphasised that it took 72 years to fulfil his sacrifice, with the historic abrogation of Article 370 by the government in 2019, a tribute to Mukherjee's enduring legacy. 'If we compare both dates, it took almost 72 years to fulfil Syama Prasad Mukherjee's sacrifice. It was the privilege of the Prime Minister to make his dream come true. On August 5th, 2019, the government made a historic decision to abrogate Article 370, honouring Dr Mukherjee's vision,' Pradhan said. Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, BJP MPs from Delhi, Delhi assembly speaker Vijendra Gupta and other senior members of the Bhartiya Janata Party accompanied him. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological parent organisation of the BJP. He also served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. (ANI)

SC notice to states on plea of Wazahat Khan, complainant against influencer Sharmistha Panoli

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to Centre and certain states on a plea filed by Wazahat Khan, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of influencer Sharmistha Panoli, seeking clubbing of FIRs lodged against him across multiple states for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his social media posts. A vacation bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh issued notices to the government of Assam, West Bengal, Delhi and Haryana and posted the matter for hearing on July 14. 'These hate speeches lead us nowhere,' said Justice Viswanathan to Khan's counsel. On request of Khan's counsel, the bench further ordered that as an interim measure till the next hearing date, no coercive action shall be taken against him for the FIRs registered or may be registered, which are similar. The bench noted that Khan was arrested in two cases registered in West Bengal and was in police custody in the FIR registered by the Golf Link Police Station, Kolkata, and was remanded to judicial custody in the other Bengal FIR. Justice Viswanathan invoked a saying that wounds inflicted by fire may heal, but not the wounds inflicted by the tongue. During the hearing, Khan's lawyer said that cases have been registered against him nationwide in retaliation for his complaint against the social media influencer Panoli. Khan is 'reaping as he has sown' but he has apologised for the tweet, after having 'learnt the lesson the hard way', said the counsel. Khan, whose complaint led to influencer Sharmistha Panoli's arrest on May 30, was himself arrested on June 9 in Kolkata's Amherst Street area. Multiple FIRs were filed against Khan, including one in Assam, for 'allegedly spreading hatred on social media and hurting religious sentiments,' according to Kolkata Police officials. Panoli had posted a video on social media and allegedly made communal comments after Operation Sindoor, after the Pahalgam attack, which left at least 26 people dead in Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)
