What makes a perfect weather day? Ten people could easily have 10 different answers. Still, most would agree that it takes a combination of mild temperatures and minimal rain to get a climate that's just right. But few places in the U.S. have that kind of Goldilocks weather year-round.
Yahoo News used data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to calculate the number of days in each county across the United States with nice weather, based on daily climate data from 2022 to 2024. Nice weather is defined as daily maximum temperature staying between 60°F and 85°F and rainfall remaining below 1 mm.
San Diego County in California came the closest to having four seasons of beautiful weather, logging about 330 — or about 11 months — of nice weather days per year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Aleutians East Borough in Alaska had the fewest nice weather days in a year, just 11. People willing to compromise on rain and temperature ranges may still be able to reach their version of climate perfection outside of the California Coast though. Many counties in Florida boast warm temperatures throughout the year, but there's a rainy season from May through October. People with high heat tolerance may also enjoy Southwestern areas, like Phoenix, where half of the year can reach over 85°F, but winters are rarely cold.

U.S. Northeast, Midwest face severe storms, flood threats

Much of the eastern U.S. and Midwest was facing the threat of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, while heat alerts were issued Sunday for over 50 million people from Kansas to the Carolinas. The big picture: NOAA's Weather Prediction Center issued a Level 3 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall over parts of the Ohio Valley through Monday morning, with storms containing 3-4"/hour rainfall rates developing Sunday evening. Forecasters said parts of Missouri and Illinois could see "locally significant" flash flooding. Threat level: A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Iowa, including Des Moines. Severe thunderstorm watches were issued for parts of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont until 9pm Sunday ET and for portions of Montana and North Dakota through midnight local time. Per a National Weather Service forecast discussion, there's a a slight risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Northeast, including New England; the Ohio Valley into the Central Appalachians; and the Northern and Central High Plains on Sunday and parts of the Northern Plains on Monday. A tornado warning was issued for Cincinnati, Ohio, the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport in Ky. and Covington, Ky. Sunday evening. New York, Boston and Indianapolis were among other major cities under threat from the severe weather. The D.C. area could also see isolated thunderstorms, a day after a flash flood emergency was declared in a Maryland region near the city. Meanwhile, the NWS warned warned the Central Plains, Lower and Middle Mississippi Valley, and Southeast should expect "dangerously hot conditions." Driving the news: A cold front over the Northeast to the Ohio Valley was threatening to unleash showers and severe thunderstorms, with the NWS warning potential hazards could include "frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes." "A quasi-stationary front extending from the Great Basin to the Northern Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley remains quasi-stationary through Tuesday evening," per the NWS. "The eastern half of the front, extending from the Mid-Atlantic to the Middle Mississippi Valley on Sunday, will move southward to the Southeast and then extend northwestward to the Middle Mississippi Valley by Tuesday evening," per the agency. "Moisture pooling along the front over the Ohio Valley will produce showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rain." What we're watching: A building heat dome across central and southeastern parts of the U.S. was expected to impact much of the Midwest by Midweek, with peak heat indices of 105 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit expected in cities including Chicago Wednesday and Thursday.

Plainfield, N.J. flood victims to get some relief, thanks to benefit concert. Here's more on how you can help.

Two devastating storms earlier this month wreaked havoc on communities in Plainfield, New Jersey. On Sunday, a benefit concert was held to help flood victims. City officials say the money will help those who have lost their homes and have no insurance. The sounds of music at Plainfield High School was uplifting and a much-needed tune as people filed in with their hearts full of warmth and their wallets open. City officials say so far they have raised more than $65,000 for victims of the July 3 and July 14 storms and flooding that killed four people and left a path of destruction, inundating homes and streets and taking down trees. With that came the arduous process of cleaning up and the strain on the city workers tasked with doing it. Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp didn't have an estimate how much damage was caused, but said city leaders are getting ready to pass an emergency resolution to get $5 million to reimburse the city for expenses incurred. "So much damage, and so, there's a lot to be made. And we know that the flood insurance isn't gonna cover most of the damage. And in some cases, most people don't have much choice, and that's why we need to have these kinds of people and the legislation that sends them to know that is local, local, right, local legislation," Mapp said. Those who showed up to help weren't just from Plainfield but from all parts of New Jersey and even Pennsylvania. There were current residents and even some who have moved away but came back to lend a hand. "Insurance doesn't cover everything. I've never been in a studio where there was a death. Funerals are expensive, so if I can help by giving a couple of dollars to help the family, even though I don't live here," former Plainfield resident Renee Sterling said. The concert was scheduled to end at 8 p.m, but you can still donate after on the city's official website.

Containment efforts gaining ground in multiple Colorado wildfires

Colorado firefighters have continued making progress as they battle several large wildfires burning across the western part of the state. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, seven uncontrolled fires are burning in Colorado. Multiple organizations provided updates on each fire's progress on Sunday. Deer Creek Fire This fire started in Utah on July 10 and has grown to include part of Montrose County as well. The fire has burned 16,340 acres in Utah and Colorado so far and is approximately 22% contained. Officials said that, in Colorado, a small firing operation took place recently along the northern edge of the fire. They also said crews have secured the southeastern portion of the fire and will continue working in the area near the state border throughout the day on Sunday. Turner Gulch Fire This wildfire has burned 15,413 acres in Mesa County since it began. Since then, firefighters have reached around 34% containment, primarily along the north/northwest border. Firefighters are planning to tackle the eastern edge directly as containment efforts continue. Officials said they've made good progress with a firing operation to the south. Wright Draw Fire Nearby, the Wright Draw Fire remains at 0% containment and has burned 448 acres, but officials expect to make significant progress on Sunday. Firefighters have reportedly made progress creating a containment line along the western side of the wildfire and bulldozing a line above the northern border. Sowbelly Fire Also burning in Mesa County is the Sowbelly Fire. Firefighters have made significant progress since the fire began and have reached approximately 66% containment. The fire has burned 2,274 acres and is reportedly creeping and smoldering. Crews have continued to mop up and access deeper areas looking for hotspots. South Rim Fire The South Rim Fire in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has burned 4,252 acres thus far. Fire crews said they've made progress removing areas of heat on the west and southwest sides of the fire and are working to remove vegetation near the access road and utility poles. The fire is currently 21% contained, with most of the fire activity in the northwest and southeast areas. Ute 63 Fire Between the Ute Mountain Reservation and the Southern Ute Reservation, the Ute 63 fire has burned 550 acres of tribal and private land. The brush fire is at approximately 8% containment, and crews are working to prevent it from spreading toward Highway 140. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the fire is a threat to some residences in the area. Cottonwood Flat Fire Approximately 310 acres have burned in the Cottonwood Flat fire northeast of Parachute. As of Sunday morning, the fire is 35% contained. The NIFC said the fire is showing "minimal fire behavior with creeping, isolated torching and smoldering." The Garfield County Sheriff's Office said the size of the fire held steady throughout Saturday and that County Road 309 will remain closed for now.
