The Rugby Championship: History and stats favour the All Blacks, but the Boks have other ideas
The Springboks begin their defence of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship – as the tournament is branded in South Africa – against Australia at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday.
The annual tournament, officially known as The Rugby Championship, is contested by Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and has been dominated by the All Blacks since 2012, when Argentina joined.
Numbers and stats have no bearing on the next match to be played, but they do define the past.
New Zealand have won the Rugby Championship nine times, South Africa twice and Australia once. Los Pumas are yet to win the title.
Statistics back up the dominance of the All Blacks.
New Zealand have won 51 of their 63 matches played since 2012. South Africa have won 33, Australia 26 and Argentina 12. The All Blacks have scored 2 154 points, the Springboks 1 683, the Wallabies 1 411 and Los Pumas 1 196. New Zealand have conceded 1 197 points, South Africa 1 383, Australia 1 735, and Argentina 2 063.
Of the 12 players who have scored 13 or more tries in the Rugby Championship, nine are All Blacks.
Judging by the four Rugby Championship nations' form over the past two years, this year's title has two contenders – New Zealand and South Africa.
The fixture list already has the Springboks at a disadvantage. Both matches against the All Blacks will be played in New Zealand. 'Disadvantage' might be putting it mildly. New Zealand have only lost two consecutive home test matches against South Africa once in their history – in 1937.
The Boks need to win at least one of the two matches against the All Blacks and ensure they come out of the two matches with at least one more log point than their rivals.
The matches will be played at Eden Park in Auckland and the Sky Stadium in Wellington on consecutive Saturdays in September.
The Springboks have not won at Eden Park since their famous victory in 1937, while the All Blacks have not lost to any opponent in Auckland since 1994.
Wellington has been a happy hunting ground for South Africa, with a win in 2018 and a draw in 2019 against the All Blacks.
History suggests two All Blacks wins against the Boks in the 2025 Rugby Championship, but present form points to two close matches. There is one statistic that might just give the Boks the edge – 65 million South Africans.
The Rugby Championship winners:
2012 – New Zealand
2013 – New Zealand
2014 – New Zealand
2015 – Australia
2016 – New Zealand
2017 – New Zealand
2018 – New Zealand
2019 – South Africa
2021 – New Zealand
2022 – New Zealand

WP add Junior Springbok flair to side to face Cheetahs

Western Province have been boosted by the inclusion of two Junior Springbok world champions in their starting line-up to face the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 16 August. Riley Norton and Gino Cupido have been included in the starting XV for the Currie Cup encounter at Toyota Stadium, which kicks off at 14:00. Joel Leotlela is on the left wing and will link up with Sevens stars Shilton van Wyk and Tristan Leyds in a speedy back three, while Cupido will partner Damian Markus in midfield. Norton will make his senior debut at blindside flank, with Gideon van Wyk on the other side of the scrum in place of the injured Zain Davids. Gary Porter takes over the captaincy from Davids and features in an unchanged tight five, while hooker Luca Bakkes and loose forward Enos Ndiao come onto the replacements bench. Head coach Labeeb Levy said that his team is focused on producing an 80-minute performance in Bloemfontein. 'We have got some incredibly talented players coming in this week and they are surrounded by a settled core who are ready to raise the standards in every area. 'Travelling to Bloemfontein is always a big challenge, but it is once we are embracing. We will need to be on our game from the first to the last whistle to get the result we need,' he said. Wallabies coach on Bok innovations: ‘Why not?'

'If he can test the boundaries and get a strategic and tactical advantage with the athletes that he has at his disposal, why not?' Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt believes that, apart from innovations that break the laws of rugby, there's no reason the Springboks shouldn't implement ideas that give them an edge. Schmidt was speaking to media after announcing his team for the opening Rugby Championship clash between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm). Bok coach Rassie Erasmus popularised the 6–2 bench split, though on Saturday the Springboks will use a 5–3 split and the Wallabies a 6–2, due to the late injury of flyhalf Ben Donaldson. Queried on the trademark innovations Erasmus has used, Schmidt replied, 'Why not?' and said he would love to be a fly on the wall when such ideas are discussed. 'A great man for testing the boundaries' Just four matches into this season and the Boks have already employed a few. Traditional centre André Esterhuizen packed down at flank in the opening game against the Barbarians. A 'hybrid player', Esterhuizen played flank in attack and dropped to centre in defence. Then, in the second Test against Italy, the Boks played a short kick-off to induce a scrum, and introduced the world to the midfield 'fake lineout' maul from open play. The latter led to a try, while World Rugby later deemed the former an intentional infringement. Still, Erasmus said ahead of the Rugby Championship that they have a few tricks up their sleeves. 'I think there are some where it may be stretching things … which then comes down to a sanction other than a scrum. He's a great man for testing the boundaries, isn't he?' Schmidt chuckled, referring to Erasmus. 'If he can test the boundaries and get a strategic and tactical advantage with the athletes that he has at his disposal, why not?' Schmidt praises Bok coaches, players ahead of clash Schmidt described Springbok assistant coaches Tony Brown and Felix Jones as smart, innovative coaches. 'I think the three of them together have some pretty good coaching meetings where they come up with pretty good ideas. If anyone's got a recording of those meetings I'd love to get them.' He said while he admired the Springboks and had learned much from them regarding blooding players to create depth, the Wallabies were still in a restructuring stage. 'We're still trying to get the fundamentals right and not stretch things to the boundary too much.' The Wallabies coach said Brown had added width to the South African game, improving the movement and structure of their game. 'You will even see them go side to side very quickly. They've got some very efficient passing, capability. With a guy like Manie Libbok, I still remember clearly that no-look kick-pass that he did against Scotland in the World Cup. 'I'm expecting that they will be really strong in the set-piece, as they always are. Their kick-chase game will be very strong. 'On any turnover, or any bit of space they get, they've got lethal finishers. With Kurt-Lee Arendse, Edwill van der Merwe, Jesse Kriel, such a strong player, André Esterhuizen.' He said the Springboks have an 'abundance of talent' who were capable of out-muscling, out-speeding and out-skilling their opponents. 'We will just have to be a lot better than we were in that last Lions Test because not just because who we are playing but where we are,' he said.

Boks will be at full throttle, says Kriel

Hard yards on the training pitch will ensure South Africa are operating at full throttle when they kick off their Rugby Championship campaign against Australia in Johannesburg on Saturday, says Jesse Kriel. A capacity 62,000 crowd will be baying for Springbok tries in the cauldron of Ellis Park in what promises to be a rousing opener (kickoff 5.10pm). In recent years, the Boks have exerted total dominance over Australia and are hunting for a fifth successive Rugby Championship victory over the visitors. Kriel said the Boks are ready to return to the standard of play that earned them respect and success throughout the rugby playing world. 'We have very high standards in the environment and there is also good competition in each position, so we spent the past few weeks working on our conditioning and match detail,' he said. 'Thanks to work on the training field, we are confident about our level of preparation. Training was very tough and we all know the game is getting quicker and more physical.
