Wizz Air unveils its roadmap to net zero by 2050
The roadmap focuses on three key areas: flights (30% emissions reductions from new aircraft technology and fleet renewal), fuel (53% emissions reductions from SAF), and footprint (4% emissions reductions from air traffic management modernisation).
As part of its Customer First Compass initiative, the company has invested €14 billion ($15 billion) to enhance its operations, including investments in the latest technology aircraft and SAF production.
This commitment to Flying Towards Net Zero is crucial for the aviation industry's long-term sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience.
Flying Towards Net Zero reflects the International Civil Aviation Organisation's long-term climate goals, which aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050.
The plan is anchored by five fundamental pillars: 53% decarbonisation through increased use of SAF, 21% decarbonisation through technological advancements in aircraft and engine technology, 7% decarbonisation through fleet renewal, 4% decarbonisation through air traffic reform, and 2% decarbonisation through operational efficiencies.
Wizz Air has the lowest emissions intensity per passenger kilometer of any airline globally and a target to reduce emissions by 25% by 2030. The company operates the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleet in Europe, thanks to investing in the best-in-class technology aircraft (Airbus A321neo). To enable these decarbonisation levers, the future of aviation depends on radical innovation.
SAF production must scale now, as it is limited and uncompetitive for a low-cost business model. Governments must ensure a long-term policy framework that drives SAF adoption and introduce incentives that close the price gap between SAF and conventional jet fuel.
Infrastructure reform is also essential for airlines to decarbonise, as air traffic inefficiencies add millions of tonnes of unnecessary emissions each year. Wizz Air is already using AI technology to improve operational efficiency, but other actors must also play their part.
Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air Corporate & ESG Officer, says: 'Wizz Air supports an ambitious vision for net zero, but the truth is that the current pace of change is not enough, and without radical intervention, aviation will fail to meet its commitments.
Achieving a net zero roadmap is fraught with uncertainties. The most significant challenges extend beyond scientific issues and encompass policy decisions, investment strategies, market dynamics, and the timely implementation of essential measures. Scientific advancements also encounter obstacles related to cost, infrastructure, and regulatory approval.
We need action, not just ambition. That's why we're calling on governments, regulators, and the fuel industry to wake up to the reality of aviation's transition and start delivering the changes that will make net zero possible. Aviation needs a policy and investment revolution to shape the industry's path.

Oman Airports is in advanced talks with European low-cost airline Wizz Air to operate direct flights between European cities and the Sultanate, following the carrier's decision to end its Abu Dhabi operations by September, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA). 'We are seriously exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from various European airports to Oman — whether via Budapest or other cities,' Al Amri was quoted as saying by ONA. The talks come at a strategic moment, with Wizz Air set to wind down its presence in the Gulf and re-focus on core European markets. The potential Muscat expansion reflects both the airline's shift in focus and Oman's growing appeal as a regional aviation and tourism hub. Al Amri noted that attracting global carriers is part of Oman Airports' broader strategy to diversify revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and support national objectives in aviation, logistics, and tourism. If finalised, the new routes would strengthen Oman's connectivity to Europe and potentially increase tourist traffic, reinforcing the Sultanate's position as a gateway to the Gulf and beyond.

Wizz Air to Exit Abu Dhabi by September 2025
Wizz Air has announced it will suspend operations in Abu Dhabi as it refocuses business away from the UAE. The low-cost carrier said it will strategically look to European markets, following a review of market dynamics. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will suspend all flights from September 1. A statement from Wizz Air said: 'Wizz Air Holdings PLC today announces a strategic realignment that reinforces the Company's core strength and focus in Central and Eastern Europe and select Western European markets. 'This decision follows a comprehensive reassessment of market dynamics, operational challenges, and geopolitical developments in the Middle East. 'As a result of the suspension of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations as part of this strategic realignment, Wizz Air will suspend all locally based flight operations effective September 1, 2025 and intends to exit from the joint venture going forward and will focus on its core markets. 'Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has faced increasing operational challenges over the past year, including: • Engine reliability constraints, particularly in hot and harsh environments, which have impacted aircraft availability and operational efficiency• Geopolitical volatility, which has led to repeated airspace closures and operational disruptions across the region, as well as wreaking consumer demand• Regulatory barriers, which have limited the Company's ability to access and scale in key markets 'These factors have significantly impacted the viability of Wizz Air's ultra-low-cost model in the region and its ability to deliver profitability in line with its core European operations. 'Wizz Air will intensify its focus on its core Central and Eastern European markets, as well as select Western European countries such as Austria, Italy and the UK. 'This strategic realignment to core markets will enable the Company to redeploy resources to regions with greater long-term potential for sustainable growth and profitability. UAE Flights: Air Arabia Starts Resuming Operations
Sharjah-based airline Air Arabia confirmed on Wednesday that it has started resuming operations on previously suspended flights. 'As regional airspace continues to open, Air Arabia is gradually resuming operations. Customers are advised to visit to check the latest updates and their flight status. Affected passengers will be notified directly via SMS and email,' the airline said. 'Air Arabia remains fully committed to the safety of our customers and crew, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this period,' the airline added. In an earlier update, the airline said it had temporarily suspended all flights to and from Iran, Iraq, Russia, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan until June 30. Jordan flights were on hold until June 26. Earlier today, Dubai-based carrier flydubai said it will resume operations to the Syrian capital from June 26, 2025. This move comes as more airspace in the region reopens and restrictions are lifted. The carrier plans to resume its full schedule across the network from July 1, following the completion of all necessary assessments. 'This remains a developing situation, and both flight and network planning are continuously reviewed, with flydubai operating within approved international air corridors and adjusting frequencies as required,' the airline said. In Abu Dhabi, Etihad flights to Tel Aviv, will remain suspended until July 15, the Abu Dhabi-based airline said. Meanwhile, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has cancelled flights to and from the UAE until June 30, in line with a similar move by Hungarian carrier Wizz Air. Dubai's flagship carrier, Emirates, announced on Tuesday that its regularly scheduled flight operations have fully resumed, experiencing only 'minimal disruptions'.
