
RM24.2 million fixed deposit fraud: Eight submit representation letters to AGC

Kota Kinabalu: Eight of the 10 individuals, including two bank managers, charged with being members of an organised crime group linked to fraudulent withdrawal of RM24.2 million from fixed deposit accounts, have submitted letters of representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) regarding the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Nazran Mohd Sham informed High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol on Monday that the prosecution had received representations from eight accused persons, namely Josepin J. Langkan, Leong Hin Ping, Vireonis Jonok, Hasran Magin, Subramaniam Thangavelu, Sugumaran K. Ponniah, Mazlani Jenuary and Nasir Abdul Rasid. Nazran said that the eight had submitted representations for the charges to be reviewed. As for the other two remaining accused persons, Nazran said they are considering submitting representation letters as well. The two are Iren Chin Nyuk Thien and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip. The 10 were separately charged with being members of an organised crime group involved in serious offences for the material benefit of the group led by Josepin J. Langkan between April 26, 2024 and July 10 the same year at the MBSB branch, here. They are contractor Josepin J. Langkan, 38; Subramaniam Thangavelu, 56, a teacher; Nasir Abdul Rasid, 60, a pensioner; Iren Chin Nyuk Thien, 38, and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip, 53, both branch bank managers; Sugumaran K. Ponniah, 56, a self-employed; Vireonis Jonok, 35, an unemployed; Leong Hin Ping, 62, a pensioner; Hasran Magin, 46, a fisherman; and Mazlani Jenuary, 53, an unemployed. The charges stated that Josepin allegedly committed the crime between April 26 and June 17, Subramaniam (between May 9 and July 4), Nasir (between April 26, and July 1), Chin (between April 26, and June 13), Christina (between May 9 and June 17), Sugumaran (between May 17 and July 3), Vireonis (between June 5 and June 26), Leong (between April 26 and July 10), Hasran (between April 26 and June 1) and Mazlani (between April 26 and July 4). The 10, on Nov 7, 2024, claimed trial to the charge under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between five and 20 years, on conviction. Duncan fixed May 27 and June 5 for mention to update the court on the representations by the accused. The court also directed that the trial date previously set for May 13-15 be vacated. Josepin, Leong and Vireonis were represented by counsel Hairul V Othman and Luke Ressa Balang; Subramaniam was represented by counsel Datuk Ram Singh and Prem Elmer Ganasan; Sugumaran, Nasir and Mazlani were defended by counsel Dominic Chew and Ariel Dasan; Chin was represented by counsel Mohd Al Hafidz Mohd Lokman and Luqman Syazwan Zabidi; Christina was represented by counsel Arthur and Hasran was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan. All accused, except Chin and Vireonis, were ordered to be remanded further. Inquest Into Zara Qairina's Death To Begin Sept 3
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Coroner's Court here has set Sept 3 to commence inquest proceedings for Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Coroner Azreena Aziz today scheduled the proceedings to run from Sept 3 to 4, Sept 8 to 12, Sept 17 to 19 and Sept 22 to 30. Earlier, Conducting Officer Mohd Fairus Johari, who is also a Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP), said the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday applied for an inquiry into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina. He said 195 witnesses are involved in the case, but the final witness list will be determined before the inquest begins. Azreena requested that the witness list be finalised at least two days before the start of proceedings. Other Conducting Officers are Dana Arabi Wazani, Afiq Agoes and Dacia Jane Romanus, all of whom are also DPPs. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here on July 17. She had been admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar at 4 am on July 16. In a statement last Wednesday, the AGC said an inquest would be conducted into Zara Qairina's death after reviewing the investigation report submitted by police.

Kota Kinabalu Coroner's Court sets September inquest dates for Zara Qairina's death

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 18): A Coroner's Court here today fixed several dates in September to hear an inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, to determine whether any criminal elements were involved. Sabah State Court director Azreena Aziz, presiding as a coroner, reserved Sept 3-4, 8-12, 17-19 and 22-30 for the hearing. Today was the first mention of the inquest. In a statement on Aug 13, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said it had decided to conduct an inquest to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding Zara Qairina's death. The AGC said the decision was made after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police in connection with the death of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha student on Aug 12. According to the AGC, the inquest proceedings aim to establish the cause of death and determine whether there were any criminal elements involved. 'This process will be conducted at the Coroner's Court independently and transparently under the provisions of the law,' the statement read. The AGC said the decision to proceed with an inquest was in line with subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code [Act 593]. On Aug 7, the legal team for Zara Qairina's family issued a statement requesting the AGC to instruct an inquest to be held to investigate whether there is criminal elements were involved in her death death. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I in Kota Kinabalu on July 17 after being admitted a day earlier. Man arrested for setting fire to family home in Kedah
SUNGAI PETANI: A 39-year-old man has been arrested for setting fire to his family home in Sungai Lalang, Bedong, yesterday. The incident also destroyed a neighbouring house. Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the suspect, the complainant's younger brother, was detained shortly after the fire. "Initial investigations found that the suspect admitted to starting the blaze by lighting pieces of paper with a lighter inside the house. "The incident followed a quarrel, and the suspect went on a rampage before setting the fire," he said in a statement today. Hanyan said the suspect and the complainant lived in the wooden-and-brick house with another sibling. "No drugs or prohibited substances were found during checks. The suspect's urine test returned negative and he had no history of mental illness," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine. Earlier, firefighters rescued a man during the 7.52pm incident. Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 2 chief Senior Fire Superintendent II Mohd Naim Mat Jaafar said the fire destroyed two houses before it was brought under control.
