Cincinnati Open: Paolini beats Gauff to march into semifinal

Cincinnati [US], August 16 (ANI): Jasmine Paolini advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing Cincinnati Open women's singles competition, defeating Coco Gauff in their quarterfinals clash on Saturday. Paolini, the world number nine with three career tour-level titles, outclassed Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion by 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, making a remarkable comeback after fumbling the first set. This is her third win against the American in as many meetings in 2025. During the decider, Paolini encountered an injury scare, rolled over her ankle while hitting a running forehand and after some consultation with her trainer, she shrugged off the pain to win the match. Despite not being in her best form this year and having lost several matches from positions of a win, Paolini overcame her past to win seven points on a trot and 12 of the last 15 to make it to her 15th semifinal of the season and her second at the WTA 1000 level. Gauff's match was filled with errors as she hit 16 double faults and 62 unforced errors in action, which lasted just over two hours. 'It was so tough," Paolini said afterwards as quoted by WTA's website. 'At the beginning, I was just running and trying to put the ball inside the court … but after a little bit, I started to feel better the ball. I stayed there every point, I tried to fight every point, and it worked," she added. For a spot in the final, she will have to overcome former top 10 player Veronika Kudermetova, who marched into her first WTA 1000 semifinal since 2023. Paolini has lost three successive matches against her, though they last played at this same tournament in 2021. (ANI)

Pogba watches as Monaco start Ligue 1 season with a win

Paul Pogba watched as Monaco easily beat Le Havre 3-1 in their Ligue 1 opener on Saturday as Lyon won away at Lens. HT Image The 2018 World Cup winner's appearance in the locker room at the Louis II Stadium was one of the highlights of the first half. Dressed in a vintage Monaco jersey, a cap on his head, and a big smile on his face, Pogba saw his team quickly take the measure of an outclassed Le Havre. Midfielder Pogba signed a two-year contract with Monaco from Juventus this summer in a bid to relaunch his career back home in France. The former Manchester United player had made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, suspension and an extortion case in which he was the victim. However to see Pogba in a Monaco jersey, fans will have to wait a little longer, along with Guinea-Bissau forward Ansu Fati, the club's other big summer signing. Adi Hutter's hosts proved dominant particularly in midfield opening after 32 minutes after Gautier Lloris bundled Aleksandr Golovin's powerful cross into his own net. Englishman Eric Dier, also a summer signing, doubled the lead with a header from a well-taken Lamine Camara corner just after the hour mark. Le Havre pulled a goal back six minutes later when Rassoul Ndiaye got the better of new Monaco goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky before Maghnes Akliouche put the result beyond a doubt after 74 minutes. Earlier Georges Mikautadze scored the only goal as Lyon got their campaign off the mark at Lens. Mikautadze struck at the end of the first half to give the seven-time Ligue 1 champions their first win since American businesswoman Michele Kang took over as president in June to save the club from relegation after compatriot John Textor resigned amid financial irregularities. Lyon turned the page on this era by winning against their former coach Pierre Sage, who took over at Lens after Will Still's departure. Financially constrained for summer signings, Lyon built its success with what it already had with strikers Malick Fofana and Mikautadze and midfield stalwart Corentin Tolisso combining well. Fofana ran rings around the Lens defence, breaking through at the end of the first half when he provided an ideal cross to Mikautadze. Despite 18 shots on goal, Lens were unable to deliver with Wesley Said and Deiver Machado both missing numerous chances. New recruit Florian Thauvin came off the bench for Lens after 57 minutes to rapturous applause from the home fans but despite bringing creativity and freshness, the World Cup winner could not make the difference. bur/ea/dmc JUVENTUS FOOTBALL CLUB

Jamil decides to move forward without Chhetri

In his first assignment, Khalid Jamil is preparing the national team for the CAFA Nations Cup to be held in Tajikistan later this month Panaji: The All India Football Federation ( AIFF ) took many by surprise when it publicly announced that 13 players from four clubs had not reported for the CAFA Nations Cup preparatory camp on the opening day in Bengaluru. Newly-appointed coach Khalid Jamil selected 35 probables for the assignment in Tajikistan, but with four clubs – Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United – busy with the Durand Cup knockouts, not everyone was available. An hour later, the AIFF announced the list of 22 players who were attending the camp. In both lists, Sunil Chhetri 's name was missing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Berkshire Hathaway: American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends These 5 Books For Turning Your Li... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Chhetri, India's highest goal-scorer and most capped footballer, was coaxed out of international retirement by national team coach Manolo Marquez early this year. He played four matches, but with Jamil now in-charge, it appears that the coach has decided to move forward without the Bengaluru FC striker. Chhetri turned 41 early this month. Khalid is just seven years older, with their playing careers overlapping for six years. The top domestic goal-scorer in last season's Indian Super League is not the only experienced player who has been left out. Also missing from the probables' list is Mohun Bagan captain Subhashish Bose, defender Ashish Rai, and Mumbai City midfielder Brandon Fernandes. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu returns to the national team set-up after being dropped by Manolo. Jamil's first list of probables was always going to throw a few surprises. The coach didn't disappoint, picking two Jamshedpur players, Albino Gomes and Manvir Singh, besides Hyderabad FC defender Alex Saji, all of whom are uncapped. The biggest surprise though was Sunil Benchamin, a left-back from Army Red who is currently on an amateur player contract. Last season, Kerala-born Sunil was playing in the third tier of Indian football with Diamond Harbour, helping the team qualify for the I-League. Jamil's first assignment with the national team will be the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup 2025, where India have games against hosts Tajikistan (Aug 29), Iran (Sept 1), and Afghanistan (Sept 4). 'The AIFF appreciates cooperation of Jamshedpur for releasing Khalid Jamil despite an ongoing tournament, a gesture of national interest,' the federation said in a statement . 'We urge all clubs to release national team players for this crucial assignment, which also prepares the squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers against Singapore.' While 13 senior players are missing from the camp, 10 U-23 players from Mohun Bagan, Jamshedpur, and NorthEast United have also failed to report in Bengaluru as Naushad Moosa's team prepares for two friendlies against Iraq in Malaysia and the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers in Qatar. The AIFF has called for "cooperation from all stakeholders." It is unlikely that the clubs will release players before the end of their campaign in the Durand Cup, with the final scheduled for Aug 23. 'The clubs are within their rights not to release players for the preparatory camp,' said a senior official. 'The international window is from Sept 1-9 and clubs are bound to release players only 48 hours prior to an international assignment.'
