We just want to see the giant flag, Akmal quips amid police warnings
PETALING JAYA : Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh brushed off police warnings to the public to stay away from the wing's gathering outside a hardware store in Penang today related to the upside-down Jalur Gemilang issue.
'We just want to come and see the giant flag and eat nasi kandar,' he said in a tongue-in-cheek post on Facebook.
DAP had sponsored the giant Jalur Gemilang for the hardware shop in Kepala Batas after the owner was accused of hoisting the national flag upside down.
Akmal previously said that he and other leaders would turn up outside the hardware store today to see if DAP had hung its flag correctly.
Bersatu Youth also said that it would join its Umno counterpart.
Penang police chief Azizee Ismail however urged all parties to wait for a decision on the matter by the deputy public prosecutor's office and to refrain from any actions that could heighten tensions.
He also warned that police would take stern action against any party that breaches the law or commits a breach of peace, according to the relevant laws.
Akmal previously threatened to protest at the shop if the owner was not charged by today, saying he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to put up a flag properly'.
Civil society group Projek Sama subsequently urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene and rein in Akmal, to stop the Umno man's 'witch-hunt', especially if the shop owner was not charged over the issue.

Ong, 79, was fined the maximum amount of S$30,000 on Friday after he pleaded guilty to the charge on Aug 4. A second charge, of instigating former transport minister S Iswaran to obtain flights and a hotel stay from him, was taken into consideration for sentencing. Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng agreed with both the prosecution and defence that judicial mercy should be exercised in this case due to Ong's ill health. He suffers from an incurable form of cancer that has damaged his skeletal system and severely compromised his immune system. He also suffers from other complications that further increase his risk of infection and place him at risk of gangrene. Ong is the founder of Singapore-based Hotel Properties Limited which is a shareholder of various businesses, including Hard Rock resorts and Four Seasons resorts across Europe and Asia.

Bung to testify in graft case on Monday
Bung Moktar Radin and Zizie Izette Abdul Samad were ordered to enter their defence last November on charges of corruption and abetment over a RM150 million Felcra investment. KUALA LUMPUR : Bung Moktar Radin, who was ordered to enter his defence on charges of corruption over a RM150 million Felcra investment almost three years ago, is expected to take the witness stand at the sessions court on Monday. M Athimulan, the lawyer for the Kinabatangan MP and Sabah Umno chief, confirmed the matter. 'Yes, the defence will begin their case on Monday,' he told FMT in a text message. The trial, to be presided over by sessions court judge Rosli Ahmad, is also fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sept 2, 2022, then sessions court judge Rozina Ayob ordered Bung and his wife, Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, to enter their defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against them. Zizie is charged with abetting her husband. The High Court acquitted them of the charges following a revision application after it ruled that Rozina had erred in calling them to answer the charges. Last year, the Court of Appeal allowed the prosecution's appeal to order the couple to enter the defence, saying that the revision application was premature. Three months ago, Bung and Zizie failed to set aside the appellate court's decision. Bung, the non-executive chairman of Felcra at the time, was charged with two counts of receiving bribes of RM2.2 million and RM262,500 as an inducement to obtain Felcra's approval to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual unit trusts. He is alleged to have accepted bribes from Norhaili Madhi, a Public Mutual investment agent, through Zizie. He was also charged with receiving a bribe of RM337,500 from Norhaili under Zizie's name at the same location on June 19, 2015. Zizie faces three charges of abetting Bung in the commission of the alleged offences. Lawyer K Kumaraendran is appearing for Zizie, while deputy public prosecutors Law Chin How and Fadhly Zamry are representing the prosecution.

High Court upholds sexual assault conviction against counselling teacher

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A former boarding school counselling teacher who was convicted of sexually assaulting six male students three years ago had his conviction upheld by the Kuching High Court today. The 35-year-old man had been found guilty by the Kuching sessions court in October 2022 of six charges of sexual assault, each carrying a 15-year sentence. Judicial commissioner Faridz Gohim Abdullah ordered the prison sentences to be served concurrently, reported Dayak Daily. Faridz also upheld the sentence of 24 strokes of the rotan. According to the facts of the case, the teacher committed the offences against victims aged between 14 and 16, between 11.30pm and 4.00am on separate days in March, April, and May 2018, within the school compound. Investigations revealed that several of the students were assaulted more than once.
