Pochettino stands firm on Pulisic omission from US squad: ‘I'm not a mannequin, I'm the head coach'
SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 — United States coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his decision to omit Christian Pulisic from recent friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland yesterday, saying he alone was responsible for choosing his squad.
AC Milan star Pulisic has been at the center of a simmering controversy over his request to be excused from US duty in the Concacaf Gold Cup, which kicked off yesterday.
Former US international players including Landon Donovan have criticised Pulisic's decision, questioning his commitment to representing the United States.
Pulisic hit back at his critics on Thursday, revealing that while he had asked to skip the Gold Cup, he had been willing to play in the warm-up games — only to be denied by Pochettino.
The winger said that he had accepted Pochettino's decision but did not 'understand' it.
Asked about his decision to leave out Pulisic yesterday, Pochettino said it was not for players to pick and choose which games they wanted to play in.
'He explained why he only wanted to be involved in two games,' Pochettino said of Pulisic. 'And I respect and I understand him. I understand him. But I don't need for him to understand our decision. Because my position is, I am 53 with a lot of experience in football.'
'If he performs well and he is the best, it's normal he's going to have a place in the national team.
'It's not because a player [is saying]: 'I want to play.' 'I want this.' 'I want that.' I signed my contract with the federation and I am the head coach — I am not a mannequin.'

Pochettino said it was important to start the Gold Cup with a "good feeling". "Today's game was also a difficult one, especially because of the negative things that happened in recent weeks," he was quoted as saying by ESPN. "Some results that haven't gone well always generate a bit of noise. It's important for the players to have that confidence." With the World Cup on the horizon, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Pochettino said the Gold Cup would be a chance for players to stake their claim for a place in the squad next year. "We want to win, but at the same time it's to help the players to perform and to knock (on) the door and say, we can perform for the national team and we can be involved in the next World Cup," he added. "That is what I expect. Win, and the player really believes that they are having the opportunity...(to) fight for a place in the World Cup." ATLANTA, June 16 — Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said Sunday he is confident new signing Liam Delap will become England's number nine after Harry Kane. Bayern Munich striker Kane, 31, has led the line for England for most of the last decade, but Delap is showing great potential, which led Chelsea to snap him up for £30 million (US$41 million) from relegated Ipswich Town earlier this month. 'I don't have any doubt that he can be in the future England's number nine,' said Chelsea's coach on the eve of their Club World Cup opener against Los Angeles FC, when asked if Delap could succeed Kane. Maresca would not confirm if the 22-year-old forward will start at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday but said Delap was not showing any nerves after taking the Blues' number nine shirt. (AFP pic) SAN DIEGO : Saleh Al-Shehri's penalty kick in the 21st minute held up as the winner as Saudi Arabia shut out Haiti 1-0 in Concacaf Gold Cup Group A play in San Diego. Al-Shehri drew a foul in the penalty area on Frantzdy Pierrot in the 18th minute, then converted a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner to lift Saudi Arabia (1-0-0, 3 points) in the opener for both teams. Haiti had an opportunity to pull even in the fifth minute of second half stoppage-time, but Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi (four saves) denied Dany Jean in the centre of the goal on a right-footed shot from outside the box. Haiti (0-1-0, 0 points) posted a decisive edge in corner kicks (11-1), but Saudi Arabia finished with more shots on goal (5-4) and shot attempts (13-7).
