Tattersalls Gold Cup on the agenda again for White Birch
Following almost a year off the track, White Birch made his long-awaited return in the Mooresbridge earlier this month and connections could not have been more delighted with his performance in defeat as the grey pushed last year's Irish Derby winner and Arc third Los Angeles to a neck.
It's a triumphant return to action for Los Angeles who manages to get the better of White Birch to take out the Coolmore Stud City Of Troy Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes for Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien 🏆@coolmorestud | @IrishEBF_ pic.twitter.com/gtKzfMQiGk

George Murphy, assistant to his father, said: 'It was a great run and we couldn't be happier with him.
'He had a long time off the track and you'd be hoping he'll improve for the run. He's been in super form all spring, of course you're a bit nervous when they've been off that long but he showed himself very well and we're delighted with him.
'He seems to have come out of it well and we're looking forward to getting him out again.'
Aidan O'Brien nominated the Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot as likely targets for Los Angeles in the aftermath of his recent success and there appears to be every chance White Birch will take him on in both races.
'He's in the Coronation Cup at Epsom, but I'd imagine we'll go for the Tattersalls Gold Cup and go to Ascot after that – that would be the way it's looking at the moment,' Murphy added.
'He (Los Angeles) is a very good horse and I'm sure he'll be tough to beat again, but we'll look forward to it.'

Najee Harris takes huge step towards NFL return after horror Fourth of July fireworks accident
Los Angeles Chargers star Najee Harris took part in football drills for the first time this training camp as he continues to recover from a bizarre fireworks 'mishap' during July 4 celebrations. The running back is coming back from a 'superficial eye injury' he suffered during the freak accident, which happened in the early hours of July 5 and left some people hospitalized. Following the incident, Harris' agent said the 27-year-old is 'fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season.' And the running back took a major step forward in his comeback on Tuesday, when he worked with an athletic trainer, running and handling a football. For the previous 10 days, Harris had been limited to conditioning work - walking laps around the Chargers' practice field wearing a helmet and weighted vest. He has been on the non-football injury list since the start of camp. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has so far stopped short of confirming Harris will be ready for Los Angeles ' season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil on September 5. 'There's a chance he is (available)' Harbaugh said last week, adding that the veteran back can open his eye once more. But precise details of the injury have remained hidden. If Harris remains on the NFI list when rosters are finalized August 26, he must miss the first four games of the 2025 season. Harris joined the Chargers back in March after agreeing a one-year deal worth up to $9.25million back in March. He previously spent four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After the freak July 4 incident, the police released a statement which read: 'This is an unfortunate accident, and our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time. 'We ask for patience and privacy for the families as the investigation continues.'

Olympics sports director reveals reason behind major LA28 switch
Swimming offers the Olympics and LA28 a 'massive opportunity' as the foundation behind the second week of action at the Games, according to sports director Pierre Ducrey. That role is usually associated with athletics, with swimming among the most popular sports in the first week of the Games. Leon Marchand notably ignited an electric atmosphere and home success early on in Paris last year at La Defense Arena. But in Los Angeles, the hosts will go against tradition after the schedule was revealed, placing track and field in the first week and swimming, a sport dominated by the USA over generations, to provide a thrilling finale, including the iconic relays on the final day of the Games on 30 July, 2028. 'Honestly, for fans, those who travel or watch at home, I don't think it will have a lot of impact,' Ducrey tells the Independent. 'The reality is, you know, those are two major sports. Everybody can plan their travel or they're watching from home well in advance, because this has been public now for a few weeks. 'So yeah, I don't believe there will be a major impact, but the reality is, as organizers, when you look at the opportunity to transform your ceremony stadium into a swimming pool, 'I think you cannot turn down this possibility, and that's exactly why this was conducted, where we are going to have a 38,000 capacity pool, and obviously, to have that, we had to flip the two sports in full collaboration with the two federations. 'And we see only opportunities on both sides. So we're very excited with this massive opportunity. Can't wait to see what swimming gives inside the Olympic Stadium, and to have an epic first week will also bring a lot of opportunities. And to your point, it will also give just as many opportunities for the home athletes to shine throughout the Games.' One of the hallmarks of Paris 2028's success was the fan engagement both inside and outside the stadia and, despite the sprawling nature of the City of Angels, Ducrey hopes to recreate that engagement in three years. 'One thing that we certainly hope to have also in LA is the fact that the people were in the streets, they were in the venue, and they really were part of the show,' adds the Swiss. 'And that's something Paris did fantastically well, the engagement with the population before the games during the games, we really have spectators that made every event at the Olympics and Paralympics, special. 'That's really something that we we feel is important to replicate in Los Angeles, we obviously have amazing venues, historical venues, most modern venues one can think of, but the quality of the show and also, very importantly, for the athletes, we need the spectators to be very engaged, and that's something we certainly hope we can have as well in LA.' The debut of breaking last year provoked controversy with the evolution of the Games moving away from traditional sports. And LA28 will be no different, offering a diverse choice for fans with five new disciplines introduced, including squash, the global phenomenon of cricket, and US favourites baseball/softball, flag football and lacrosse. But despite some negative attention surrounding breaking, Ducrey rejects the potential for added pressure for the new sports to deliver. 'I don't think those sports will see that as pressure,' he added. 'You know, they will probably see that more as a fantastic opportunity to showcase their sports on the biggest platform there is out there. I had the opportunity to speak with a number of them, and they are very excited to be additional sports to the program, as per the feat they have with the games, as you know or don't, but this is an opportunity we created as part of Olympic agenda in 2020 to give the opportunity for the organizing committees to bring on board sports that makes sense in their context. 'And this list of sports you just went through is very much the fruit of that assessment conducted by the Los Angeles team, in discussion with the IOC, of course, but trying to find what additional pieces they needed to make their games more appealing. And they went for some sports which have lot of following in the in the US at the moment, also for global sport with massive appeal, like cricket, which will make their return to the Olympic Games. 'So I think this combination that they spent a lot of time developing will definitely be a great addition to the Olympic Games, and does give a platform for the organizers to customize a little bit the product to their audience. And at the end of the day, that's also very important that there is this flexibility, as we could see with, for example, character of baseball in Japan, and we are seeing here through the sport you just mentioned. It does bring a unique opportunity to make these games and the games in general, even more special.'

Shohei Ohtani: Dodgers star sued in real estate deal
Ohtani is referred to in the lawsuit, in which some portions are redacted, as "Otani." The developers say in the lawsuit that they spent more than a decade trying to work on the deal before signing Ohtani to an endorsement deal in 2023. "This case is about abuse of power. Defendants used threats and baseless legal claims to force a business partner to betray its contractual obligations and strip Plaintiffs of the very project they conceived and built. Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity," the lawsuit says. "Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity. Plaintiffs bring this suit to expose Defendants' misconduct and to ensure that the rules of contract, fair dealing, and accountability apply equally to all -- celebrity or not." Ohtani and Balelo are accused in the lawsuit of "tortious interference and unjust enrichment, who used their "celebrity leverage to destabilize and ultimately dismantle Plaintiffs' role in the project" and attempted to sabotage a second business venture. Ohtani is listed in a 2024 press release for the Vista at Mauna Kea Resort project, aimed at appealing to Japanese and U.S. high-end buyers, that says he will be the first resident on the property. "To me, Hawaii is a beautiful blend of Pacific Ocean cultures," Ohtani says in the release. "Here, I found my own paradise at Mauna Kea Resort: Two perfect beaches, two amazing golf courses, and so much more. I selected my homesite and am building my winter home here. This is a special place - a place I will soon call home." Ohtani is in his second season with the Dodgers, after signing a 10-year, $700-million contract, helping Los Angeles win the World Series last year. He is a five-time All-Star and three-time Most Valuable Player, who is hitting .284 with 42 home runs and 78 RBI for the NL West leaders in 2025.
