Nagpur: Mundle English Medium School recently hosted a crime awareness workshop aimed at sensitizing students on safety measures and fostering vigilance in light of rising urban crime rates.
Organised in collaboration with the city police department, the workshop featured Ravinder Singal, commissioner of police, as the chief guest and keynote speaker. Singal stressed the importance of community policing and the proactive role citizens must play in crime prevention. "Being aware, alert, and informed is the first step towards building a safer society," he remarked.
The interactive session covered a wide range of topics, including cyber safety, drug addiction, reporting suspicious activities, and understanding legal rights.
Head constable Atul Agarkar from the cyber crime unit gave an in-depth presentation on online safety, addressing threats such as identity theft, phishing scams, and social media fraud. He advised students to use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and avoid sharing personal information online.
Students were also introduced to various emergency helpline numbers by the police team. In a gesture of gratitude and solidarity, students tied rakhis to police personnel. The school received a memento from Singal as a token of appreciation.

‘Family saw only dishonour in her achievements': Daughter killed for ‘honour' in Gujarat's Banaskantha: was set to get MBBS seat

AHMEDABAD: She dreamed of healing people and worked tirelessly to achieve it. But the regressive mindset of her family could not see her bright future as a doctor — they saw only "dishonour" in her achievement. In the end, 18-year-old Chandrika Chaudhary became a victim of an alleged honour killing in Banaskantha district, just days before the Gujarat high court was to hear a habeas corpus petition filed by her partner, 23-year-old Haresh Chaudhary. Chandrika had toiled day and night to score 478 marks in her NEET exams, making her eligible for admission to a government medical college. But her ambition collided with the walls of age-old fears. Police said her uncle, Shivram Chaudhary, decided that sending her to study would bring "shame" — fearing she might fall in love and marry by choice. Instead of seeing her future, he saw dishonour. Her partner, Haresh, told police and TOI, "Chandrika's uncle, Shivram, visited some colleges and saw boys and girls studying together. He told her father she should not be sent there as she might fall in love with a boy and marry him. They took away her phone, cut her off from social media, and made her do only household chores." When she became drowsy, the duo took her to a storeroom in the house and strangled her with a dupatta. They then staged the scene to make it look like suicide. Police officials said Shivram told some villagers that Chandrika had suffered a heart attack, while told others it was a suicide — asking them not to disclose the truth. Haresh's habeas corpus petition eventually exposed Chandrika's murder. She was killed on June 25. Banaskantha police said the investigation confirmed it was a premeditated killing. Her father remains absconding, while Shivram is in police custody. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 14-Year-Old Raped, Killed By Cousin Hours After Tying Rakhi To Him, Body Found Hanging

33-year-old man raped and murdered his minor cousin after she tied Rakhi on his wrist. He staged it as suicide, but police found evidence. Rakshabandhan, a festival where a brother promises to protect his sister, was shamed after a cousin allegedly raped and murdered his minor sister hours after she tied Rakhi on his wrist. The disturbing news was reported from Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya. As per the police, after killing the girl, he hung her body from a noose to make it look like suicide. As per a report by NDTV, after celebrating Rakshabandhan on Saturday, 33-year-old Surjeet went back to his home upon consuming a lot of alcohol. He raped the girl while she was asleep and then killed her. As per the police, the girl's father was asleep in the next room but couldn't hear anything. The girl's body was found hanging the next day. After the gruesome killing, Surjeet started misleading the investigation. Police got suspicious when he did not let any other family member answer the questions. As the police reached the murder spot, they were sure it was not a suicide case because there were bloodstains in several places. Her body was sent for a post-mortem, which confirmed rape. NDTV further reported that Surjeet was held and he confessed to the crime during interrogation. PTI report, the police have arrested the 29-year-old relative, the husband of the class 10 student's paternal aunt, under various sections of the BNS and POCSO Act. The police further said, the accused was remanded to judicial custody after a local court rejected his bail application. Police also detained four other accused who also video recorded the rape. As per the girl's complaint, the relative visited their residence on Raksha Bandhan on August 9, and took her to a deserted place where she was gang-raped.
