Nicky Henderson stuns ‘disastrous' Il Est Francais with £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab

NICKY HENDERSON stunned the 'disastrous' Il Est Francais with a £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab. Hendo's brilliant mare Aston Martini - whose previously biggest claim to fame was 1 Master trainer Nicky Henderson plundered a very decent prize in France - as hot favourite Il Est Francais flopped again Credit: PA Aston Martini, who is rated 132 over hurdles, was getting 2lbs from Il Est Francais but could have given weight all round as she ran out a decisive ten-length winner. It was yet another flop for 3-5 chance Il Est Francais, who looked a world-beater when winning the Kauto Star Novices' Chase at Kempton in 2023. The Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm-trained chaser put in one of the greatest jumping performances the Surrey track has ever seen that day. And he looked like the King George winner last Boxing Day only to be nutted late on by Banbridge in a Christmas cracker. But a weak finish in the Ryanair saw questions over his future once more - after he bled when flopping at Auteuil last November. Now doubts have surfaced all over again after he could only finish third in a race that should have been his for the taking. Henderson - who is His Aston Martini, who is closely related to former Grand National winner Rule The World, stamped her class all over this 2m3f race. Most read in Horse Racing Sent off around 7-1, jockey Felix De Giles never had to get serious, merely easing out the mare to win comfortably. Sun Racing's Matt Chapman was one of those commenting on Il Est Francais' latest nightmare. And he suggested the horse could benefit from being sent to Henderson, with a change of scenery perhaps enough to reignite his career. Chapman said on Sky: "You know what, if I was the owner I'd try a change of scenery. "That's not to do with the way current connections train the horse, but I'd maybe send him to Nicky Henderson. "Perhaps different surroundings, a different feed, whatever might make a difference to the medical condition - or whatever it is he has. "Maybe it won't make a difference where he was, but I would just try something different and see if anyone else can sort out his issues. "Because they have been going on some time now and, for me, it might time to try something different… or give up! "But I wouldn't personally give up on him." George didn't sound too disappointed afterwards, saying Il Est Francais would now enjoy a summer break before coming back in the autumn. Another crack at the King George looks logical but he is out to 20-1 for that now. Speaking after the win, Henderson said: "That was fantastic, a great performance, and we only came here to achieve one thing and that was to get some black type, as there were no more Listed races in Britain and we've had it in mind for some time. "It nearly scuppered our plan to see Il Est Francais in the race, but she was amazing. "It's a beautiful track and it was beautiful ground with so much grass on it, it's a great place. "I was talking to Noel George and he said it wasn't just Il Est Francais in there and there was also some other very good horses in there. "It's actually the second time we've won that race and we won it with Fixe Le Kap in 2017 and I rode here 50 years ago in a cross-country, which is a bit scary!" Katie Walsh salutes ‘absolutely brilliant' Rachael Blackmore after retirement from saddle

Blessed with supreme talent, Walsh believes every highlight of Blackmore's glittering career has been thoroughly deserved after she brought the curtain down with one final winner for long-time ally Henry de Bromhead at Cork on Saturday. Walsh said: 'Every opportunity she was given, she grabbed with two hands and she had a marvellous career. 'She would do very little wrong and all she would do is get better and better and better. She always had her homework done and knew exactly what she was doing. 'Her Cheltenham Festival winners were provided by Willie Mullins and Henry de Bromhead and to think she had the support of the champion trainer and another right at the top of the game was testament to her ability - and she also had an association with plenty of the big owners like Gigginstown. 'She had a great way of reading races, she was strong both physically and mentally and would line up there with the best of them every day of the week and she was just an inspiration as a human being, she was just absolutely brilliant.' It was once Walsh herself and contemporary Nina Carberry who were seen as the trailblazers for women in the weighing room, but Blackmore's achievements have rewritten the record books and surpassed the stellar accomplishments of her predecessors. The 35-year-old bows out with 18 Cheltenham Festival victories and as well as her historic Gold Cup triumph aboard A Plus Tard in 2022, is amongst a select number of riders to have held aloft all four trophies of jump racing's blue riband, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Champion Hurdle and Stayers' Hurdle. Blackmore also eclipsed Walsh's then third-placed record finish by a female in the Grand National when becoming the first woman jockey in the 182-year history of the Aintree marathon to win the race aboard Minella Times in 2021, with Walsh highlighting a supreme dedication to her craft which allowed glass ceilings to be shattered. Walsh continued: 'It's been great to witness some of those great days and she's a star person and a perfect example to any young jockey starting out in the game - if you do what Rachael Blackmore does and you are good enough, success will come. 'She was extremely dedicated and worked very, very hard and you don't get anywhere in this industry without working hard - and that's what she did. 'She is a lovely person and she never changed a bit from the moment she started to the moment she finished and I'm delighted she gets to retire on her own terms.' Blackmore was once the Pony Club protege who became an unintentional superstar of sport, but despite somewhat humble beginnings, her record is backed to stand the test of time, with Walsh - whose brother Ruby is one of the most decorated riders of all time - feeling her name is more than worthy of being mentioned amongst the greats of racing. 'I can't see anyone in my lifetime that might surpass Rachael's achievements,' added Walsh. 'At this moment in time, there is nobody, but that's not to say that someone won't come through - you would not have predicted this would happen 10 or 15 years ago. "Who knows and that's the beauty of it, but I'm just glad I was there for it and saw it all from the start to the finish - and in years to come, if no one else does come along, I can say I remember Rachael Blackmore and I know how her story started and how it finished.' There have also been tributes paid from the world of Flat racing, where Hollie Doyle - fresh from passing Hayley Turner to become the most successful British female jockey at Ascot on Saturday - assessed the incomparable legacy Blackmore leaves and the impact she has had on the sport as a whole. 'She's obviously been a huge trailblazer and she's just a great jockey,' said Doyle. 'What she's done for everyone in racing really has been great and it's been a great lift really over the last few years to have someone like her do what she's done. 'She's done it all, hasn't she? She's ticked every box and I suppose shut down any questions that were asked. I think it's even harder in National Hunt racing and she has done it all. 'Henry de Bromhead has obviously been a great supporter and gave her the ammunition, but she's been a great jockey and I think she's proved a lot of people wrong.'

Taxi journey changed Rachael Blackmore's life forever

Rachael Blackmore retires as a jockey having achieved things many riders could only dream of. Since riding her first Cheltenham Festival winner in 2019, she went on to record 18 victories at the famous meeting and completed a clean sweep of the feature races after winning the Stayers' Hurdle on Bob Olinger this year. She also won the Gold Cup on A Plus Tard in 2022, the Champion Hurdle on Honeysuckle in both 2021 and 2022 and the Champion Chase on Captain Guinness in 2024. But her finest moment in the saddle came at Aintree in April 2021 when she partnered Minella Times to victory in the Grand National, becoming the first female to win the race. All of those victories came for trainer Henry de Bromhead, who started using Blackmore as a jockey after a conversation in a taxi on the way to Aintree with Eddie O'Leary, the brother of Michael O'Leary, who manages the Ryanair boss' Gigginstown operation. The Waterford handler told Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1: "It was at a time when we had no stable jockey. We were just using the best available and Eddie suggested trying Rachael. She'd ridden a good bit for them. "She'd had one or two rides for me, but she'd ridden a good bit for Gigginstown. And she'd just been champion conditional. And yeah, I said, sure, give it a go. "I really liked her profile and obviously I've seen her riding all these winners. So yeah, there was no sort of fixed job or anything. "She just started riding for us and she just kept winning. Everyone wanted her after that and just went from strength to strength from there. "I don't think either of us ever thought we'd have achieved what we did together. We've had some amazing times, but even more than just (racing) she's so much more to us, me and my family than a jockey. It's a jockey-trainer relationship. "She's an amazing person and just delighted to see her going out on her terms." De Bromhead also reflected on a hugely emotional victory at Cheltenham in 2023 as Honeysuckle laned the Mares' Hurdle to win at the Festival for the fourth year in a row. The victory came just months after the death of the trainer's son Jack, 13. "That was a big day for all of us, including her," said De Bromhead. "A lot of pressure. It was the mare's last run. Obviously personally and professionally, it had been a really tough time and it was amazing how she pulled it off with Honeysuckle. It's a day that will stand out in my memory forever."
