CM, oppn leader slam award for ‘Kerala Story'
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan congratulated Malayali artists who won honours in the National Film Awards. The awards to Urvasi and Vijayaraghavan enriched Malayalam cinema, he said. However, he criticised the jury for choosing the controversial film 'The Kerala Story' for awards and said the awards were an insult to Kerala. W ithout mentioning the name of the movie, Vijayan said, "The jury has disrespected the esteemed tradition of Indian cinema, which stands for religious harmony and national upliftment, by choosing for awards a film built on lies, aimed at defaming Kerala and spreading communalism. This is part of the Sangh Parivar agenda to use cinema as a weapon to implement their divisive agenda. We strongly protest this action. Every Malayali and believer in democracy across the country should raise their voice against this injustice. We must unite against the politics that turn art into a tool for promoting communalism." Opposition leader V D Satheesan said the awards to the film The Kerala Story was unacceptable. He said the film's sole intention was to spread religious hatred. "BJP and Sangh Parivar, who are implementing divisive politics, are trying to gain political advantage by spreading false information about Kerala. This will not succeed," he said. TNN

Kerala CM, Opposition slam National Award for 'The Kerala Story', call it a ‘communal propaganda tool'
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday sharply criticised the decision to award national film honours to "The Kerala Story", directed by Sudipto Sen, accusing the jury of betraying the proud tradition of Indian cinema. Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, V D Satheesan, also criticised the decision to award national honours to The Kerala Story, alleging that the BJP government is using the National Film Awards as part of its hate campaign. Filmmaker Sudipto Sen won the Best Director award for his film "The Kerala Story", which also received the award for Best Cinematography. The film had courted controversy for its portrayal of women in Kerala being forcefully converted and recruited by the terror group Islamic State. "We register our strong protest against this action. Every Keralite, and indeed every believer in democracy across the country, must raise their voice against this injustice. We must unite against the politics that seeks to turn art into a weapon for fostering communalism," Vijayan said in a statement here. He said that by granting awards to a film built on falsehoods with the aim of defaming Kerala and spreading communalism, the award jury had insulted the proud tradition of Indian cinema, which has long stood for communal harmony and national upliftment. "In doing so, they are advancing the Sangh Parivar's agenda of turning cinema into a weapon for implementing a communal agenda," the Chief Minister said. He, however, hailed the achievements of Malayalam cinema when the 71st National Film Awards were announced, calling it a "remarkable success". "The moment was made even more special with Urvashi and Vijayaraghavan -- whose exceptional talent has enriched Malayalam cinema -- winning the awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. May these honours inspire Malayalam cinema to soar to new heights with even more outstanding films," Vijayan said. In his statement, Satheesan said the film The Kerala Story was given an award solely with the intention of promoting religious hatred. "This is unacceptable," he said. He accused the Sangh Parivar -- which, according to him, is leading a campaign against Christians -- and the BJP government of "politicising" even the National Film Awards. "By spreading falsehoods about Kerala, the BJP and the Sangh Parivar, which practise divisive politics, are trying to gain political advantage. This will not succeed," he said. He also congratulated the other award winners.

‘Sensitive Matter': MEA Refutes Reports In Nimisha Priya's Execution Case
The Ministry of External Affairs urged restraint and rejected speculation on Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing the death penalty in Yemen. India is working to bring her home. The Ministry of External Affairs urged restraint and rejected speculative reporting around the case of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse facing the death penalty in Yemen, reaffirming that India is working 'through all possible channels" to bring her home. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'This is a sensitive matter. The Government of India has been giving all possible assistance in this case. As a result of our efforts, you all have seen that the sentencing was deferred… As I said last time, we are also in touch with some friendly government in this matter… I would urge to refrain from believing any media report. Please wait for an update from us." The statement from MEA came days after 13-year-old Mishel, the daughter of Nimisha Priya, went to Yemen to plead for her mother's life. Mishel, who had not seen her mother in over a decade, was accompanied by her father Tomy Thomas and Global Peace Initiative founder Dr KA Paul. In an emotional video message delivered in both Malayalam and English, Mishel said, 'I love you, mummy. Please help bring my mother back home. I so badly want to see her. I miss you, mummy." Tomy, also speaking from Yemen, appealed directly to the authorities, saying, 'Please save my wife Nimisha Priya and help her reach her hometown." Nimisha Priya, a trained nurse from Kerala, moved to Yemen in 2008 and later opened her own clinic. In 2017, she was arrested for the alleged murder of her former business partner, Talal Abdo Mehdi. Authorities claim she attempted to sedate him to retrieve her passport- reportedly held by him without consent- but the sedative proved fatal. She was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to death in 2020. Her execution, initially scheduled for July 16, was suspended after sustained diplomatic outreach from India. The MEA confirmed it is providing full legal assistance to Nimisha Priya's family, including visa support and consular access, and has deputed a team of legal and Sharia experts to Yemen. The case remains complex as under Yemeni Sharia law, the victim's family holds the right to pardon in exchange for diyyah (blood money). However, the brother of the deceased, Abdelfattah Mehdi, has publicly refused any clemency, saying, 'There can be no pardon for the crime." Dr KA Paul praised Yemeni authorities for engaging with the humanitarian appeal, saying, 'Nimisha's only daughter did not see her for 10 years. Mishel is here. I want to thank the Talal family. As soon as you release Nimisha, hopefully tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, we shall be very grateful. God will bless you." Calling Nimisha Priya a 'symbol of peace," he added, 'The nation of Yemen will bring investments and prosperity when you address the world because Nimisha has become the daughter of India. What you are doing is an amazing gesture." The Indian government has maintained a cautious stance, urging the media to avoid conjecture as sensitive negotiations continue. The MEA reiterated, 'Please wait for an update from us." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
