Women to become jockeys for charity horse race at Goodwood
A group of women are training to become jockeys for the day in order to race at the Glorious Goodwood festival.On 31 July, 12 women will race at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester, West Sussex, in the Markel Magnolia Cup, which is raising money for The King's Trust International's Project Lehar.The women, who are novice riders, include an author, police officer, lawyer and fashion designer.Among those training for the race, Kate Hutchins, a social media influencer from Brighton, said: "My work day-to-day can be glamorous, so to do something that's the complete other end of the spectrum is so cool."
Currently, 15 riders are in the running to race at Qatar Goodwood Festival, with the final 12 to be confirmed after British Racing School standard riding and fitness assessments in May.James Crespi, Goodwood Racecourse director, said: "Every year the inspirational women who take part in the Markel Magnolia Cup become part of our incredible story, and it's something we're immensely proud of."Project Lehar offers vocational training, entrepreneurship and life skills courses for girls and young women from low-income backgrounds in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.The Markel Magnolia Cup has raised more than £2.7m for charitable causes since its inception in 2011.Ms Hutchins added: "This journey has really changed my life already. I have suffered with anxiety, and my whole adult life I have been trying to get to the bottom of it."Since I've been training to be a part of the Markel Magnolia Cup and riding almost every day, that's just disappeared. It's life-changing."Among the other competitors is Lois Logan, an up-and-coming show jumper and daughter of TV host Gabby Logan and former rugby player Kenny Logan.

Denbighshire jockey marks her success with prestigious award
Heidi Palin, from Llandyrnog, won the title of Champion Amateur National Hunt Lady Jockey 2024-25 on May 30 at Stratford Racecourse. She has been amateur jockey for Dan Skelton in Warwickshire for the last five years. Heidi said: 'I had three rides on Friday at Stratford and needed to win one of the races to win the title. 'I left it till the last race to cross the line and come first riding FrereD'Armes, winning by 13 lengths. There was a feeling of relief and excitement. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the support from everyone at work and my family. 'After my summer break, I'll be back to work at Dan's and hopefully get some good rides, and try and go for the Champion Lady Amateur Jockey again next year.' Heidi joined the Denbigh and Flint Pony Club when she was younger and then tried her hand at show-jumping. After she finished school at the age of 16, she then went to the British Racing School in Newmarket, where she completed a nine-week course. From there, she went to ply her trade at Dan Skelton's yard in Warwick.

Giant leap for Gabby's girl as Lois Logan swaps showjumping for horse racing at Glorious Goodwood
Her mother Gabby is a former Commonwealth Games gymnast and commentator, who has just landed a plum role as one of the three hosts of Match of the Day. Her father Kenny is a retired Scotland rugby union international, who now runs a sports marketing company, and her twin brother Reuben is also a professional rugby player. And now, Lois Logan has proven that sport runs through her genes as well, after the 19-year-old showjumper signed up to ride at Glorious Goodwood on July 31. Lois, who is studying geography at Loughborough University, is one of 15 amateur female jockeys training for the 2025 Markel Magnolia Cup. All are in the running to race down Goodwood's home straight, with a final field of 12 riders set to be selected after the British Racing School holds standard riding and fitness assessments next month. The race, which has raised more than £2.7 million for charitable causes since its inception in 2011, is this year supporting The King's Trust International Project Lehar. The scheme aims to empower adolescent girls in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh through vocational training, skills development and promoting gender equality. Lois said: 'My dream has always been to be a showjumper. I remember the 2012 Olympics when Team GB won, and I was just like: "I really want to do that." 'As a family, we're really involved in sport. But horses are very different from anything my Mum had seen before. 'It's taken her some time to understand it as a sport. Her mind will be blown by racing, I think. My dad is a bit more savvy because he grew up around horses and animals.' Lois was inspired to take part in the race by 2019 winner Khadijah Mellah and friend Eleanor Franchitti, who competed last year. 'I never thought it would be a possibility for me,' added Lois, who lives with her parents in Buckinghamshire. 'It didn't really cross my mind. 'I'm a showjumper which is really different to racing. Even when Goodwood DM'd me on Instagram and reached out to me and said: "Can we have a chat?", I still didn't put two and two together. Then when they asked me, I said: "Yes! Absolutely." 'I'm just going to go into it, enjoy the whole thing and obviously do the best I can.' Other contestants taking part include Nina Barbour, chatelaine of Bolesworth in Cheshire, and US author Christy Cashman, who lives in Kilkea Castle in Ireland.
