Anthropic CEO says proposed 10-year ban on state AI regulation 'too blunt' in NYT op-ed

The Hindu06-06-2025
A Republican proposal to block states from regulating artificial intelligence for 10 years is "too blunt," Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei wrote in a New York Times' opinion piece.
Amodei instead called for the White House and Congress to work together on a transparency standard for AI companies at a federal level, so that emerging risks are made clear to the people.
"A 10-year moratorium is far too blunt an instrument. AI is advancing too head-spinningly fast," Amodei said.
"Without a clear plan for a federal response, a moratorium would give us the worst of both worlds - no ability for states to act, and no national policy as a backstop."
The proposal, included in President Donald Trump's tax cut bill, aims to preempt AI laws and regulations passed recently in dozens of states, but has drawn opposition from a bipartisan group of attorneys general that have regulated high-risk uses of the technology.
Instead, a national standard would require developers working on powerful models to adopt policies for testing and evaluating their models and to publicly disclose how they plan to test for and mitigate national security and other risks, according to Amodei's opinion piece.
Such a policy, if adopted, would also mean developers would have to be upfront about the steps they took to make sure their models were safe before releasing them to the public, he said.
Amodei said Amazon.com-backed Anthropic already releases such information and competitors OpenAI and Google DeepMind have adopted similar policies.
Legislative incentives to ensure that these companies keep disclosing such details could become necessary as corporate incentive to provide this level of transparency might change in light of models becoming more powerful, he argued.

‘MNS and Sena UBT will contest together in BMC polls': Sanjay Raut

Amid the buzz of an alliance between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut on Friday claimed that Uddhav and Raj Thackeray will together contest the upcoming civic body elections in the state including the BMC and emerge victorious. Though brothers Raj and Uddhav Thackeray have not yet officially announced anything regarding a pre-poll alliance, Raut said talks were already underway for several municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Kalyan Dombivali and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. He asserted that 'no one can break the unity of the Thackerays.' 'The Thackeray brothers will contest the civic polls together and they will win. Talks are already going on for several municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. No evil force can now break the unity of the Thackerays,' he said. 'For Maharashtra and Marathi unity, the brothers have unsheathed the sword. Our discussions with MNS are still ongoing, but the goal is clear—to ensure victory in every civic body where we contest together,' he added. Although neither Uddhav nor Raj has formally announced the official alliance, the two parties have already come together for the August 18 election to the BEST Employees Co-operative Credit Society in Mumbai where the Sena (UBT)-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena and the MNS-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena are contesting jointly against a BJP-backed panel led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's aides Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar. The move marks the first electoral collaboration between the cousins in years, following a series of public appearances together—including a Marathi language event earlier this year on July 5 in Mumbai and Raj's visit to 'Matoshree' on Uddhav's birthday. Sena UBT sees Mumbai and Thane as a key battleground. For the Sena UBT, winning the BMC would be retaining its bastion and rule over Mumbai and winning Thane Municipal Corporation would be a symbolic blow to rival Eknath Shinde, whose political career began there and who currently dominates the body. Leaders from Sena UBT believe that an alliance could revive their organisational presence in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, where both parties have historically drawn significant Marathi support. The BJP, however, dismissed Raut's statement, with BJP leader Pravin Darekar likening the Sena (UBT) to 'an impatient groom who injures his knee before the wedding' and alleging that Raut feared his party's 'extinction' without MNS support. Since the speculation began, workers and office-bearers from both parties have been seen together at protests and public functions, further fuelling talk that the estranged cousins may formally reunite for the long-delayed municipal polls across Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Raut also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his independence day speech, alleging he had turned the country 'from religious to fanatically religious' and 'adopted the Congress's Swadeshi slogan, becoming Gandhian–Nehruvian.'

Congress' contributions in freedom movement must be highlighted, says leader

Congress Party in-charge of Gajapathinagaram Constituency Chitrada Durgaprasad on Friday said that the party's contribution in India's freedom movement and the development of Independent India should be highlighted for the present generation. He urged the students pursuing courses in History to ensure that others also know the importance of freedom struggle and sacrifices of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. He hoisted tricolour in Gajapathinagaram office and asked the party activists to highlight the Congress Party's great role in achievement of independence from the British. He said that the BJP and its frontal organisations have been misusing social media platforms to undermine the contribution of the Congress Party and to show the first Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru in a poor light. He hoped that the Congress would soon get back its glory as people have been observing the qualities of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Washington DC sues to block Trump's federal takeover of its police department

The nation's capital challenged President Donald Trump's takeover of its police department in court on Friday (August 15, 2025), hours after his administration stepped up its crackdown on policing by naming a federal official as the new emergency head of the department, with all the powers of a police chief. District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in a new lawsuit that Mr. Trump is going far beyond his power under the law. Mr. Schwalb asked a judge to find that control of the department remains in district hands. 'The administration's unlawful actions are an affront to the dignity and autonomy of the 700,000 Americans who call DC home. This is the gravest threat to Home Rule that the District has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it," Mr. Schwalb said. The lawsuit comes after Trump Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Thursday night that Drug Enforcement Administration boss Terry Cole will assume 'powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police.' The Metropolitan Police Department 'must receive approval from Commissioner Cole' before issuing any orders, Ms. Bondi said. It was unclear where the move left the city's current police chief, Pamela Smith, who works for the Mayor. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back, writing on social media that 'there is no statute that conveys the District's personnel authority to a federal official.' Chief had agreed to share immigration information Mr. Schwalb had said late on Thursday that Ms. Bondi's directive was 'unlawful,' arguing it could not be followed by the city's police force. He wrote in a memo to Smith that 'members of MPD must continue to follow your orders and not the orders of any official not appointed by the Mayor,' setting up the legal clash between the heavily Democratic district and the Republican administration. Ms. Bondi's directive came even after Smith had told MPD officers hours earlier to share information with immigration agencies regarding people not in custody, such as someone involved in a traffic stop or checkpoint. The Justice Department, said Ms. Bondi, disagreed with the police chief's directive because it allowed for continued enforcement of 'sanctuary policies,' which generally limit cooperation by local law enforcement with federal immigration officers. Ms. Bondi said she was rescinding that order as well as other MPD policies limiting inquires into immigration status and preventing arrests based solely on federal immigration warrants. All new directives must now receive approval from Cole, the Attorney General said. The police takeover is the latest move by Mr. Trump to test the limits of his legal authorities to carry out his agenda, relying on obscure statutes and a supposed state of emergency to bolster his tough-on-crime message and his plans to speed up the mass deportation of people in the U.S. illegally. It also marks one of the most sweeping assertions of federal authority over a local government in modern times. While Washington has grappled with spikes in violence and visible homelessness, the city's homicide rate ranks below those of several other major U.S. cities and the capital is not in the throes of the public safety collapse the administration has portrayed. Residents are seeing a significant show of force A population already tense from days of ramp-up has begun seeing more significant shows of force across the city. National Guard troops watched over some of the world's most renowned landmarks and Humvees took position in front of the busy main train station. Volunteers helped homeless people leave long-standing encampments — to where was often unclear. Department of Homeland Security police stood outside Nationals Park during a game on Thursday between the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies. DEA agents patrolled The Wharf, a popular nightlife area, while Secret Service officers were seen in the Foggy Bottom neighbourhood. Mr. Bowser, walking a tightrope between the Republican White House and the constituency of her largely Democratic city, was out of town Thursday for a family commitment in Martha's Vineyard but would be back Friday, her office said. The uptick in visibility of federal forces around the city, including in many high-traffic areas, has been striking to residents going about their lives. Mr. Trump has the power to take over federal law enforcement for 30 days before his actions must be reviewed by Congress, though he has said he'll re-evaluate as that deadline approaches. Officers set up a checkpoint in one of DC's popular nightlife areas, drawing protests. Troops were stationed outside the Union Station transportation hub as the 800 Guard members who have been activated by Mr. Trump started in on missions that include monument security, community safety patrols and beautification efforts, the Pentagon said. Troops will assist law enforcement in a variety of roles, including traffic control posts and crowd control, National Guard Major Micah Maxwell said. The Guard members have been trained in de-escalation tactics and crowd control equipment, Maxwell said. National Guard troops are a semi-regular presence in DC, typically being used during mass public events like the annual July 4 celebration. They have regularly been used in the past for crowd control in and around Metro stations.
