Anthropic CEO says proposed 10-year ban on state AI regulation 'too blunt' in NYT op-ed
Amodei instead called for the White House and Congress to work together on a transparency standard for AI companies at a federal level, so that emerging risks are made clear to the people.
"A 10-year moratorium is far too blunt an instrument. AI is advancing too head-spinningly fast," Amodei said.
"Without a clear plan for a federal response, a moratorium would give us the worst of both worlds - no ability for states to act, and no national policy as a backstop."
The proposal, included in President Donald Trump's tax cut bill, aims to preempt AI laws and regulations passed recently in dozens of states, but has drawn opposition from a bipartisan group of attorneys general that have regulated high-risk uses of the technology.
Instead, a national standard would require developers working on powerful models to adopt policies for testing and evaluating their models and to publicly disclose how they plan to test for and mitigate national security and other risks, according to Amodei's opinion piece.
Such a policy, if adopted, would also mean developers would have to be upfront about the steps they took to make sure their models were safe before releasing them to the public, he said.
Amodei said Amazon.com-backed Anthropic already releases such information and competitors OpenAI and Google DeepMind have adopted similar policies.
Legislative incentives to ensure that these companies keep disclosing such details could become necessary as corporate incentive to provide this level of transparency might change in light of models becoming more powerful, he argued.

‘MNS and Sena UBT will contest together in BMC polls': Sanjay Raut

The move marks the first electoral collaboration between the cousins in years, following a series of public appearances together—including a Marathi language event earlier this year on July 5 in Mumbai and Raj's visit to 'Matoshree' on Uddhav's birthday. Sena UBT sees Mumbai and Thane as a key battleground. For the Sena UBT, winning the BMC would be retaining its bastion and rule over Mumbai and winning Thane Municipal Corporation would be a symbolic blow to rival Eknath Shinde, whose political career began there and who currently dominates the body. Leaders from Sena UBT believe that an alliance could revive their organisational presence in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, where both parties have historically drawn significant Marathi support. The BJP, however, dismissed Raut's statement, with BJP leader Pravin Darekar likening the Sena (UBT) to 'an impatient groom who injures his knee before the wedding' and alleging that Raut feared his party's 'extinction' without MNS support. Washington DC sues to block Trump's federal takeover of its police department
The nation's capital challenged President Donald Trump's takeover of its police department in court on Friday (August 15, 2025), hours after his administration stepped up its crackdown on policing by naming a federal official as the new emergency head of the department, with all the powers of a police chief. District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in a new lawsuit that Mr. Trump is going far beyond his power under the law. Mr. Schwalb asked a judge to find that control of the department remains in district hands. 'The administration's unlawful actions are an affront to the dignity and autonomy of the 700,000 Americans who call DC home. This is the gravest threat to Home Rule that the District has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it," Mr. Schwalb said. The lawsuit comes after Trump Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Thursday night that Drug Enforcement Administration boss Terry Cole will assume 'powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police.' The Metropolitan Police Department 'must receive approval from Commissioner Cole' before issuing any orders, Ms. Bondi said. It was unclear where the move left the city's current police chief, Pamela Smith, who works for the Mayor. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back, writing on social media that 'there is no statute that conveys the District's personnel authority to a federal official.'
