Germany's Industrial Production and Exports Declined in April

Bloomberg06-06-2025
German industrial production and exports sank in April, dashing hopes of a cyclical recovery of the country's critical sector amid looming US trade tariff threats.
Output fell 1.4% from the previous month and shipments of goods abroad declined 1.7%, the statistics office said on Friday. Both downturns were more severe than predicted by economists in Bloomberg surveys.

Trivago Completes $32 Million Holisto Acquisition — and Why That Matters

Trivago is making AI search and booking improvements that could stick — if larger factors such as the ChatGPTs and Geminis, and other Google travel products don't get in the way. Trivago issued its second quarter results Wednesday and we interviewed CEO Johannes Thomas via Zoom after the earnings call to learn why it upped its stake to 100% in hotel rate aggregator Holisto for $32 million. We also asked about Trivago's new AI filters, its most recent ad campaign, and whether Trivago had "turned the tide." (The answer: "The tide is not moving in the wrong direction right now.") Why is the Holisto deal important? Because the achilles heel of price comparison sites like Trivago, Kayak, Skyscanner and Google Hotels is that travelers seldom book right on their platforms. Thomas told us during the interview that it acquired all of Holisto faster than anticipated because it handles Trivago Book & Go. A pilot program with partners during the second quarter showed significant increases in actual travel booking on the Trivago platform.

Sonos' smart assistant is expanding from music to home control

Since its launch in 2022, the capabilities of Sonos Voice Control have expanded to include setting timers and checking the weather. But by the end of this year, the smart assistant will introduce compatibility with the Philips Hue smart home platform allowing it to also control lights through voice commands, according to Hueblog. In late 2019, Sonos acquired a Paris-based company called Snips that had created a 'private-by-design' AI voice platform. Nearly three years later, Sonos Voice Control was introduced offering users an alternative to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for controlling the company's smart speakers with voice commands. Sonos Voice Control can be used to adjust volume, group multiple Sonos speakers together, or play songs from streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify, with an emphasis on privacy since all commands are processed locally and never sent to the cloud. Its capabilities have slowly expanded over the past few years, but interoperability with Philips Hue would be the first time Sonos Voice Control is compatible with another smart home platform. Specifics on how exactly you can control Hue lights with the smart assistant aren't known, but Hueblog speculates that users will be able to turn individual lights on and off, adjust brightness, or activate scenes using voice commands. More details will potentially be revealed at a media event that Philips Hue has planned for September 3rd, 2025, during the IFA show in Berlin where it typically announces new products and services. The Verge has reached out to Sonos about this potential major expansion of Sonos Voice Control's capabilities. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. ProSieben Boards Recommend Sweetened Offer From Berlusconi's MFE

ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE 's executive and supervisory boards recommended that shareholders accept MFE-MediaForEurope NV 's amended takeover offer, calling the new terms 'adequate' and a sign of MFE's long-term commitment, according to a statement Wednesday. MFE lifted its bid for the German media company by boosting the stock component to 1.3 MFE shares from 0.4 MFE shares previously, while keeping the €4.48 per-share cash portion unchanged. The acceptance period for the amended MFE offer will expire on August 13.
