Jordan's stock of wheat covers 10 months — Ministry of Industry

AMMAN — The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply announced on Wednesday that the Kingdom's wheat reserves are sufficient to cover domestic consumption for 10 months, while barley stocks will last for eight months.
Ministry Spokesperson Yanal Barmawi said that the ministry continues to issue tenders to secure additional quantities, with imports coming from "key" suppliers such as Romania, Bulgaria and Russia, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Construction is under way on new grain storage facilities in Qatraneh with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes. Once completed by the end of the year, Jordan's total grain storage capacity will reach 2.31 million tonnes, Barmawi added.
He said that current storage includes 710,000 tonnes in vertical silos and one million tonnes in horizontal warehouses, stressing that the ministry is committed to safeguarding the Kingdom's strategic reserves and securing as much stock as possible.
The increase in storage capacity, he noted, will allow Jordan to maintain wheat reserves sufficient for more than 16 months.
Barmawi also highlighted that supply chains continue to operate normally and are being closely monitored to ensure the availability of essential foodstuff and other goods, sourced both locally and through imports from various origins.

US wheat surges 4% on short-covering, lifting corn and soy

CHICAGO, June 18 (Reuters) - Benchmark Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures jumped more than 4% on Wednesday as weather worries in parts of the United States and Europe, coupled with signs of fresh global export business, prompted speculators to cover short positions, brokers said. Corn and soybean futures followed the higher trend ahead of a U.S. government and market holiday on Thursday. CBOT July wheat settled up 25-1/4 cents, or 4.6%, at $5.74-1/4 per bushel after reaching $5.75, the contract's highest price since March 24. CBOT July soybeans ended up 3/4 cent at $10.74-3/4 a bushel and July corn finished up 2 cents at $4.33-1/2 a bushel. Wheat posted the biggest advances. Commodity funds hold a hefty net short position in CBOT wheat futures, leaving the market vulnerable to short-covering rallies, analysts said. "Anybody that sold Chicago wheat in the last couple of months is under water. So short-covering is the big thing, and you've got a few smaller stories that are supporting and encouraging that," said Terry Linn, analyst with Linn & Associates in Chicago. He noted that Algeria booked more than half a million metric tons of wheat in a tender this week, according to European traders. In addition, the U.S. winter wheat harvest is off to a slow start due to wet conditions, while parts of Russia and the European Union have been dry. Soybean futures inched higher while soyoil futures ended nearly unchanged, consolidating after a spike last Friday tied to larger-than-expected proposed U.S. biofuel mandates. The implied increase in domestic demand for soyoil has muted some of the concern about a slowdown in U.S. soybean exports due to trade tensions with China, the world's biggest soybean customer. "Having this domestic demand mandated is a huge relief, and it changes the fundamental complexion of the (soybean) balance sheet," Linn said. Corn futures rose along with wheat, but the most-active July contract trailed the gains in deferred contracts, reflecting easing concerns about tight supplies of last year's U.S. corn harvest and rising competition for export business, which has been a mainstay for U.S. corn futures. "Even though corn demand has been good so far, you just haven't had any additional demand develop. And at the same time, Brazil brought home a massive crop. And that is going to be competing with us here for a while," Linn said. Traders await market direction from the USDA's weekly export sales report, which will be released on Friday, a day later than usual, due to the U.S. Juneteenth holiday on Thursday. Jordan, Iraq in positive talks to extend oil import agreement — ministry

AMMAN — Jordan has officially requested an extension of its memorandum of understanding with Iraq for the import of crude oil, according to Iman Awad, Director of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The current agreement is due to expire on June 26, 2025, according to Al Mamlaka TV. Awad said that discussions between the two sides are progressing smoothly and in a positive atmosphere, with no obstacles reported so far. She noted that the memorandum allows for annual renewal, and both countries are working constructively toward its continuation. Under the agreement, Jordanian tankers continue to transport Iraqi crude at the agreed daily rate of 10,000 barrels. The pricing is based on the monthly average price of Brent crude, with a discount of $16 per barrel to account for differences in quality and transport costs. The imported Iraqi oil represents around 7 per cent of Jordan's total oil consumption. Awad added that Jordan is responsible for providing the tanker trucks used to transport the oil from Iraq to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery in Zarqa. The fleet of tankers is shared equally between Jordanian and Iraqi companies, in line with the terms of the memorandum. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Jordan: Ministry launches tourism operations room to boost sector amid regional challenges

AMMAN — Amid ongoing regional challenges, Jordan continues to position itself as a safe and attractive destination for international visitors, according to Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab. Speaking during a meeting with tourism operators and key stakeholders on Monday, Annab announced the establishment of a dedicated tourism operations room aimed at enhancing coordination and ensuring uninterrupted activity across the sector. In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, Annab said: 'The new room will bring together representatives from both public and private tourism bodies to respond efficiently to any emerging developments.' She also underscored the importance of unified efforts to uphold Jordan's positive image abroad, calling for stronger cooperation among all partners in the tourism ecosystem. Annab also noted that the ministry was closely monitoring booking trends and developing comprehensive strategies to manage potential cancellations or disruptions. The ministry is preparing new promotional campaigns targeting both established and untapped international markets, the minister said, adding that these initiatives aim to showcase the diversity of Jordan's tourism offerings while also promoting domestic travel. Tourism academic Noor Ahmad welcomed the initiative, saying, 'This step shows that the government is thinking ahead. It is vital to reinforce the message that Jordan is open and prepared.' Hiba Abdalla, a local tour guide specialising in eco-tourism, told The Jordan Times that international interest remains steady. 'Jordan is still on travellers' maps,' she said, adding that clear communication and proactive planning are key to maintaining tourist confidence. Tourism stakeholders expressed their readiness to support national efforts, agreeing that close cooperation is essential to ensure Jordan maintains its reputation as a leading travel destination in the region. © Copyright The Jordan Times.
