70-year-old Ahmadi community worship place demolished in Pak's Punjab
'The police on the pressure of religious extremists have not only demolished the mihrab (prayer niche) of a 70-year-old Ahmadi worship place but also desecrated two Ahmadi graves by breaking their tombstones," the Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Pakistan (JAP) said in a statement.
The incident took place at Butala Sharm Singh village in Gujranwala district, some 80 kilometres from Lahore, on Tuesday.
It said during the operation to demolish the Ahmadi worship place, the police also entered the adjacent Ahmadi graveyard and broke the tombstones of two graves that bore sacred inscriptions.
Amir Mahmood, spokesperson for JAP, strongly condemned the 'illegal action", saying the police 'unjustifiably vandalised the 70-year-old Ahmadi place of worship".
He said it is the duty of the police to protect the lives, property and religious sites of all citizens, regardless of their faith.
The spokesperson called on senior police officials to take immediate notice of the incident and ensure that those responsible for damaging the worship place and desecrating Ahmadi graves are held accountable under the law.
On the other hand, a police officer said that the Ahmadi community of the area had been asked to demolish the prayer niche of its worship place and tombstones of the graves as they had Islamic verses inscribed.
Besides, many locals had also objected to Islamic verses inscribed on an Ahmadi worship place and tombstones, he said.
'When the Ahmadi community did not comply with the order, police acted on their own," he said.
Although Ahmadis consider themselves Muslims, Pakistan's Parliament in 1974 declared the community as non-Muslims.
A decade later, they were not just banned from calling themselves Muslims but also barred from practising aspects of Islam.
These include constructing or displaying any symbol that identifies them as Muslims such as building minarets or domes on mosques or publicly writing verses from the Quran. Amnesty International has called upon the Pakistani authorities to immediately end the harassment, intimidation and attacks on the Ahmadi community and uphold their right to freedom of belief and religion. CM orders depts to not demolish a single slum in Delhi
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced an immediate halt to demolition drives in the Capital's slum clusters and promised that all future removals, if unavoidable, will be accompanied by advance rehabilitation. Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta. (PTI) Stressing that the city's slum dwellers will not be 'harassed anymore', she said that 50,000 old and dilapidated flats built for the economically weaker sections (EWS) will be renovated and allotted to slum dwellers. 'No slum will be removed without providing alternative housing first,' Gupta said, adding that if required, the government would amend the existing slum policy or even approach court to ensure protection for the poor. 'The pain of slum dwellers will not be ignored,' she said. Gupta's announcement comes amid mounting political tension over demolition drives in Delhi's informal settlements since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in February. While the demolitions – carried out by agencies like the DDA, Railways and municipal bodies – were largely in compliance with court orders, they sparked criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which accused the BJP of breaking its pre-election promise to protect slum residents. Among the major drives were the June 1 demolition of 300 homes in Jangpura's Madrasi Camp, the June 17 razing of 200 structures in Ashok Vihar, and the June 18 clearance of 25 homes in Gokalpuri. The BJP defended the actions as necessary for reclaiming public land, but Gupta's announcement will come as a reassurance for residents. 'The slums in Delhi are an inseparable part of the city. My government is committed to giving them rightful recognition,' Gupta said, alleging that opposition parties had reduced slum dwellers to a vote bank. She said her government is holding meetings across departments to chalk out a plan for permanent housing and that all departments have been instructed to immediately halt any ongoing demolition activity. She also promised that if rules need to be changed to protect the rights of slum residents, her government will not hesitate to do so. A key part of this effort, she said, is the revival of 50,000 unallotted flats constructed for the poor years ago under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). These flats, which became dilapidated after lying vacant for years, will now be renovated and allotted to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). Gupta accused previous government of wasting the opportunity to house the poor. 'Despite receiving crores under JNNURM, the flats were never allocated. Departments like DUSIB and DSIIDC were on the verge of returning ₹732 crore to the central government,' she said. 'Now, with approval from the Union housing ministry, this money will be used to renovate the flats and house slum dwellers.' She said the dispute between the Delhi and central governments over whether the flats should be rented out or directly allotted to slum dwellers had stalled progress for years. Her government, she added, is now committed to direct allocation. 'In these neglected settlements, there was no drinking water, no drainage, no roads. Past governments left them to alcoholism and despair. My government will restore their dignity and give them the pride of being true citizens of Delhi,' she said. Responding to the allegation, AAP's Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj said CM Gupta and the BJP have been bluffing the slum residents in the city. 'If Rekha Gupta is serious about slum rehabilitation, she should ask the central government and its agencies — such as the DDA, railways, and the land and development department — to withdraw the cases against these JJ clusters in the high court and Supreme Court,' Bharadwaj said in a statement.

'Entire State Of Himachal Pradesh May Vanish': Supreme Court's Grim Warning Over Ecological Crisis
Last Updated: The court highlighted the broader issue of unsustainable development across the state The Supreme Court issued a stern warning on Friday about the dire environmental situation in Himachal Pradesh. 'The day is not far when the entire state of Himachal Pradesh may vanish," said Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, highlighting the Himalayan state's worsening ecological crisis, aggravated by frequent natural disasters. The strong comments were made during a hearing about environmental protection on Shri Tara Devi Hill in Shimla. The court upheld the Himachal Pradesh government's decision to designate it as a green area, banning further construction. However, the bench used this opportunity to address the broader issue of unsustainable development across the state. Justice Pardiwala said, 'You cannot earn revenue at the cost of the environment," stressing that unchecked and often unscientific construction, hydropower projects, four-lane roads, and extensive deforestation are pushing the delicate Himalayan ecosystem to its limit. The Supreme Court pointed out that 'the situation in the state of Himachal Pradesh has gone from bad to worse", with severe ecological imbalance causing more frequent and intense natural disasters. This year alone, hundreds of lives have been lost and thousands of properties destroyed due to floods and landslides. The court noted that climate change is having a 'visible and alarming impact", with retreating glaciers (such as the significantly shrinking Bara Shigri glacier), changing snowfall patterns, and erratic weather events destabilising slopes and threatening livelihoods dependent on farming, horticulture, and ecotourism. The SC attributed these disasters more to human activities than to nature alone, emphasising that uncontrolled tourism, poor waste management, and the neglect of environmental safeguards in infrastructure projects are major contributing factors. By converting the matter into a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Supreme Court has indicated its intention to closely monitor the situation, instructing the Himachal Pradesh government to submit a detailed action plan within four weeks. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Brakes On Bulldozers? No Slum Demolition Without Proper Rehabilitation, Says Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
The chief minister also condemned previous governments for treating slum dwellers merely as 'vote banks' and failing to provide basic amenities Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta issued a crucial directive to all land-owning agencies in the capital on Friday, including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Indian Railways. The directive mandates that no slum clusters are to be demolished without first providing alternative housing for eligible residents. Sources say the chief minister's decision reflects her government's dedication to the housing rights of slum dwellers, who play a vital role in Delhi's workforce and social fabric. Gupta stated that in cases where demolitions are unavoidable for developmental projects, alternative housing must be arranged in advance. She pointed out that around 50,000 houses, built years ago in the city's outer areas under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), will be renovated and allocated to eligible slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). These flats, previously neglected and unused by past administrations, will now be refurbished using unutilised funds, with approval from the central government. Gupta emphasised that 'the pain of slum dwellers will not be ignored under any circumstances". She also mentioned that her government is ready to amend existing policies on slum clusters and, if necessary, approach the courts to protect the housing rights of these residents. Opposition parties have frequently criticised slum demolitions and displacement of the urban poor. The CM also condemned previous governments for treating slum dwellers merely as 'vote banks" and failing to provide basic amenities, reaffirming her administration's commitment to making these residents 'true citizens of Delhi". view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
