Chandigarh: The three-day protest at Panjab University came to an end on the evening of Independence Day after students and university authorities reached a mutual understanding on key issues related to police presence, vehicle checking, hostel inspections, and campus traffic management.

The protest began on August 13, when students objected to police personnel conducting vehicle checks at internal nakas, claiming it violated assurances given during a prior meeting with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and dean, Student Welfare (DSW). Students demanded the complete withdrawal of police from campus, citing concerns over excessive surveillance and intrusion.
After multiple rounds of discussions, it was agreed that vehicle checking would be handled solely by university security.
Police will only be involved if something objectionable is found during routine checks. A similar arrangement was made for hostel room inspections—wardens and university security will conduct checks, and police will intervene only in cases of illegal activity.
The naka at the administrative block, which had become the focal point of the protest, has been suspended. However, three other nakas inside the Sector 14 campus will continue to operate, and checking at the main gates will remain in place.
Authorities also agreed to review the one-way traffic system on two major campus roads. The chief of university security will submit a report, and the final decision will be taken by the SSP.
On August 14, tensions escalated when students blocked another road and two sat on a hunger strike. The DSW warned that continued disruption could impact the upcoming student council elections, expected to be announced next week.

While the written agreement does not mention any reduction in police deployment—a key student demand—DSW Prof Amit Chauhan said the arrangements were made keeping both student concerns and campus security in mind. "Our responsibility is to ensure safety while also listening to students. These steps reflect that balance," he said.
Police deployment will resume once the election code of conduct comes into force.

India-Maldives bilateral trade jumps 3-fold in last 7 years

Bilateral trade between India and the Maldives has registered a more than 3-fold jump over the past seven years from $223 million in 2017–18 to $680 million in 2024–25, according to official figures. India's exports to the Maldives rose from $217 million in FY 2017-18 to $561 million in FY 2024-25, while imports from the Maldives expanded from $6 million to $119 million during the same period. The trade between the two countries is expected to increase further with Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing a Rs 4,850 crore line of credit to the Maldives during his recent visit to the island nation last month. Additionally, PM Modi announced that discussions for a free trade agreement have also started between the two countries. India has decided to promote renewable energy in the Maldives and will share its experience in this sector with the Indian Ocean neighbour. PM Modi visited the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu and attended the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. This also represented a turnaround in relations with the Muizzu government, which came to power in 2023. The turnaround in the bilateral ties assumes significance as President Muizzu, known to be close to China, was known for his anti-India rhetoric while in the opposition as part of his political strategy to oust the earlier government. The Maldives is one of India's key maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean Region, and the overall bilateral ties, including in areas of defence and security, witnessed an upward trajectory under the previous governments in Male. This sentiment is embedded in India's Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR vision, which recognises that the security and prosperity of the region are inseparable. India's approach is grounded in the belief that small island nations are not peripheral actors in global affairs but are frontline states in the fight against climate change, guardians of critical sea lanes, and partners in maritime security. The Maldives, straddling vital shipping routes, occupies a central place in India's Indian Ocean strategy.

Telangana's share in surplus water should be decided first, says Dy CM Vikramarka

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Sunday said that it would be legal and fair to build any new project on the Godavari River after the share of both Telugu states in surplus waters is decided. He said that the responsibility of determining water shares lies with the Centre. The Deputy Chief Minister, who is visiting Visakhapatnam to participate in various programmes, was talking to media persons. The Congress leader mentioned that Telangana state was formed precisely for the sake of river waters. 'Clarity on the issue of surplus waters will come only after the ongoing projects in our state are completed and water allocations are made,' he said. The Telangana Deputy CM was responding to questions about the Godavari-Banakacherla project proposed to be built by Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on August 15 defended the Godavari-Banakacherla project, saying this will not harm the water interests of any state. Referring to Telangana's opposition to the project, he said that no one needs to worry. 'We have decided to divert Godavari waste water from Polavaram to Banakacherla to transform Rayalaseema into an agrarian region. We will use the water that would otherwise be wasted by flowing into the sea,' he said in his speech on Independence Day. CM Chandrababu Naidu said that as a lower-riparian state, Andhra Pradesh has to bear floods. 'When floods occur, if the upstream states release water, we, as the downstream state, bear the losses and difficulties. Why are there objections to using the same floodwater as the downstream state? We have to bear the flood, but how can we cope if we do not benefit from the flood water?' he asked. Meanwhile, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister also participated in a protest organised by the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh over 'vote chori'. Dy CM Vikramarka said that the deletion of voters is tantamount to trampling on civil rights. The Constitution has given voting rights to every citizen of the country. He alleged that the BJP has benefited by deleting genuine voters and by including bogus voters in the list. He said Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has exposed vote theft before the entire country with evidence and questioned the Modi government. Vikramarka said that despite this, the attempt by the Election Commission to act in favour of the BJP is dangerous for democracy. He claimed that Rahul Gandhi's yatra is receiving full support from political parties and people.
