It wasn't always pretty, but after he pulled off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, Raoni Barcelos added a former champion to his resume.
Barcelos (20-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) outworked ex-bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt (14-7 MMA, 9-7 UFC) for a unanimous decision Saturday on the main card at UFC on ESPN 69 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The Brazilian won with a trio of 29-28 scores.
Garbrandt came out swinging in a hurry and got inside a couple times in the first 20 seconds, only to have Barcelos briefly dump him to the canvas. That slowed Garbrandt down after his quick early pace, but 75 seconds in Garbrandt stung Barcelos with a punch and put him on the canvas. The former champ let the Brazilian back up, and they eventually tied up on the fence. Barcelos broke away with a knee.
When Barcelos tried to wrestle a couple times, Garbrandt stuffed the takedown attempts, then went after some bigger offense and just missed with a couple that may have ended things. Garbrandt stuffed the first four of Barcelos' takedown attempts, but found himself on his back late after a scramble – and one that may have influenced the judges.
Barcelos looked for a takedown early in the second, but Garbrandt stuffed him again. Barcelos threatened with knees along the fence after several scrambles, but midway through the second still was unable to get the fight to the canvas. Despite that, he controlled the pace without much resistance from Garbrandt, who was stuck on the outside fighting backward the bulk of the round.
Barcelos appeared to be in control in the third until a late Garbrandt rally, but he never put enough together to be a true threat before the horn. Although Garbrandt stuffed 10 of Barcelos' 11 takedown attempts, defense wasn't enough.
Barcelos won for the third straight time. Although he was a betting favorite Saturday, he was a massive underdog for an upset of Payton Talbott earlier this year. Garbrandt dropped his second straight.

Marlon Vera returns to face Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Fight Night 262 in Vancouver

A matchup between UFC-ranked top 10 bantamweights is heading to Canada. At UFC Fight Night 262 on Oct. 18 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, former title challenger Marlon Vera will face Aiemann Zahabi in his home country. The promotion officially announced the matchup Thursday evening. Ecuador's Vera (23-10-1 MMA, 15-9 UFC) will look to get back on track after dropping two straight. His last victory over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292 earned him a title shot against Sean O'Malley at UFC 299, in which he came up short. His last fight was a decision loss to former flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo. "Chito" is currently ranked No. 7 by the promotion. Three spots behind at No. 10 is Canada's Zahabi (13-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), who has been on a hot streak since 2021. After dropping back-to-back fights against Ricardo Ramos and Vince Morales, Zahabi has become a force in the bantamweight division. He is currently on a six-fight winning streak that includes two first-round stoppages. His most recent outing in May at UFC 315 was a unanimous decision win over former champion Jose Aldo. With the addition, the current UFC Fight Night 262 lineup includes:

Flyweights Jafel Filho, Clayton Carpenter set for UFC Rio showdown

Submission specialists Jafel Filho and Clayton Carpenter have agreed to face off in a 125-pound clash at the upcoming UFC Fight Night event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Oct. 11. Multiple people with knowledge of the booking told MMA Fighting. The event is headlined by former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira against Rafael Fiziev at the Farmasi Arena. Filho (16-4) is down to 2-2 under the UFC banner after losing an electric contest with Allan Nascimento in May, ending his two-fight finishing streak against Daniel Barez and Ode Osbourne. A teammate of Jose Aldo in Rio de Janeiro, Filho holds a grappling victory over top-ranked flyweight Amir Albazi and gave Muhammad Mokaev one of his toughest matches to date in MMA, when he lost via third-round submission. Carpenter (8-1) won his first two fights in the UFC with rear-naked choke finishes over Juancamilo Ronderos and Lucas Rocha before losing a decision to Tagir Ulanbekov in his most recent appearance. A member of MMA Lab in Arizona, Carpenter stopped his opponents in six of eight professional wins, going 6-1 as an amateur between 2015 and 2018. Damon Martin contributed to this report.

Henry Cejudo: Winner of Lerone Murphy vs. Aaron Pico beats Alexander Volkanovski

Henry Cejudo has very high hopes for the winner of Lerone Murphy vs. Aaron Pico at UFC 319. Murphy (16-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) welcomes Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) to the octagon in the Aug. 16 co-main event at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+, ESPN, pay-per-view). Cejudo is touting the winner of that fight to dethrone UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC), a take that left his co-host Kamaru Usman completely baffled. "I personally feel like the winner of this fight is going to fight Alexander Volkanovski, and I also feel like the winner of this fight is going to become our next champion," Cejudo said on his "Pound 4 Pound" podcast with Kamaru Usman. "All due respect to Volk, but these young guns – Lerone Murphy is fighting Aaron Pico. Aaron Pico is in his f*cking prime – power, wrestling. "He's been a man child since he was a kid, already competing at the highest levels while in high school beating world champions. Then Lerone Murphy, what he's been able to do to a lot of these fighters – undefeated, very tricky, brings in a lot of the wrestling. He's just different. He's like a Merab (Dvalishvili) – they're pretty unpredictable, and how is it he's able to use that wrestling. I think this co-main event is the most competitive fight on this whole fight card." Pico is a slight favorite to hand Murphy his first career loss, and Cejudo sees that happening. "Honestly, I've got Aaron Pico," Cejudo said.
