Aamir Khan could've ‘pretended' to stay married with Kiran Rao for appearances: ‘I'm an expert at divorces'

Aamir Khan was just 21 when he married his first wife, Reena Dutta, in 1986. After 16 years together, the couple divorced. Aamir's second marriage, with Kiran Rao, also ended in divorce after around 16 years. At his 60th birthday, Aamir announced that he is now in a relationship with Gauri Spratt, and since then, his fans have been wondering if the actor will tie the knot again. In a new interview, Aamir spoke about his two marriages and said that their dissolution was a loss to the people concerned and their families as well. He also said that in the case of Kiran, he could have pretended that they were still together but that would have been a lie.
In a chat with Zoom, Aamir shared, 'In India, marriage is very serious. When your marriage falls apart and you get divorced… people don't like that, even emotionally. I know that too, and I also believe that marriage is a very important thing and shouldn't be taken lightly. I completely agree with that. That's why I can present this matter truthfully in front of people, and I should.'
Talking about both his marriages, Aamir said that they divorced because they were not happy together. 'Like with my marriage with Reena, I had to say truthfully that we can't be married anymore, same is the case with Kiran. It was a loss for all of us, even for our families. We were not happy to do this but there were some circumstances where we realised that our relationship has changed,' he said.

Aamir said that he and Kiran could have lied to the world and pretended to stay married but that would have been unfair to the institution of marriage. 'I thought I could have either lied to the world and pretended that me and Kiran were very happy together, and stayed married. And we could have stayed like that forever. Personally, we could have done whatever we wanted but stayed married for the world. But that would be a lie. And it would be unfair for the institution of marriage because then you would be devaluing marriage. That wasn't acceptable to me and Kiran,' he said.
He added, 'People often divorce each other because things turn sour, they are fighting, but that didn't happen in my case because we respected each other. We did what we felt was right and we didn't hide it,' he said. Aamir then joked about his divorces and laughed, 'Shaadi mein main kamyab nahi hua hun, lekin divorce mein main hua hoon (I haven't been successful in marriage, but I've been successful in divorce).'
Aamir was asked about his take on the institution of marriage after two divorces. He shared, 'I still have the same outlook on marriage. It's a very old institution and I have the deepest regard in my heart for it. It's a very beautiful feeling when someone discovers that they want to spend the rest of their life with this person. I would want that every person gets to experience this.'

Aamir Khan defends endorsing Dream 11, says he has refused alcohol and tobacco ads: ‘If it's legal, then let me do it'

Aamir Khan, like most of his contemporaries, endorses many brands, but unlike many of them, he is choosy about the brands he lends his name to. For instance, Aamir has refused to lend his name to alcoholic beverages and tobacco products so when he got associated with gaming app Dream 11 recently, his fans were quite shocked. In a recent interview, Aamir shared that he has a few conditions before he decides to endorse a brand, and the first condition is that the product has to deliver on its promise. In a chat with Zoom, Aamir shared, 'I always check that the product is delivering what they have promised.' He said that he has another condition and as per that, he never announces the price of the product. 'Sometimes, I break my own principle. For example, I never announce the price of the product that I am endorsing because I am not a salesman. I am a brand ambassador. I can talk about your brand but not about it's price,' he said and immediately recalled that he once broke that rule while endorsing Coca Cola. 'Once, I broke that rule and spoke about price as well. This was during 'Chota Coke' for Rs 5. Because I really liked its story. It was so creative that I compromised,' he said. Aamir said that he has refused big money in the endorsement space and shared, 'I have refused alcohol and tobacco. Recently, I did Dream 11 so people asked me that you are doing Dream 11, you refused alcohol, tobacco. But the script for Dream 11 was so good. I couldn't say no to it. I laughed so much after I read that ad. I was certain that I wanted to do it. As for the product, if it is illegal then ban it, then we won't make any ads on it. And if it's legal then let me do it too.' ALSO READ | Jaat: Bollywood stars are incapable of laughing at themselves; if Himesh Reshammiya can do it, why can't Sunny Deol? Aamir is one of the few celebrities who has not been associated with a tobacco brand. Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, and all the other big stars have endorsed pan masala brands. Akshay Kumar also got associated with one such brand but following massive backlash from his fans, he had to step away from the brand.

Aur jab apki shaadi toot ti hain aur aap divorce pe jaate ho toh woh logon ko pasand nahi hain. Woh baat main bhi jaanta hu, aur maanta hu ki shaadi ko lightly nahi le sakte. Isiliye uss cheez ko sachhai ke saath rakhna chahiye mujhe (In Hindustan we treat marriage very seriously. When one's marriage falls apart and there's a divorce, people do not like that. That I fully know, which is why we can't take it lightly. So I wish to keep it truthful.' He went on to add, 'Ki meri jo shaadi hain Reena ke saath, hum ab shaadi-shuda nahi reh sakte. Hum khushi-khushi ye cheez nahi kar rahe. Lekin kuch circumstances aise aaye ki laga ki humare circumstances badal gaye hain. Meri thinking ye hain ki yaa toh main duniya ko jhooth bol sakta hoon. Aur pretend kar sakta hoon ki Kiran aur main bohot khush hain saath main. Aur zindagi bhar hum shadi-shuda reh sakte hain… lekin woh jhooth hoga (That I cannot stay married with Reena or Kiran.
