Antiques Roadshow guest barely reacts at true value of Wimbledon trophy
An Antiques Roadshow expert shared an unexpected personal connection to a guest's "exceptional" trophy.

An Antiques Roadshow guest brought along his grandfather's remarkable Wimbledon memorabilia, estimated to fetch a handsome sum.
Jon Baddley was the expert in charge who encountered a man bearing historic mementos from a former Wimbledon sensation amidst another shoot for the BBC favourite.
Spotting Norman Brooks in a framed picture, dubbed "the father of Australian tennis", the expert enquired about the man's connection with him.
"He's my grandfather. In his tennis career, he won many, many events but he won Wimbledon in 1907, being the first foreigner to win Wimbledon which was considered a mammoth effort because the British weren't going to let it go easily."
Norman Brooks wasn't just a one-time victor though as he took victory at the prestigious international contest again seven years later in 1914.
"We believe this trophy and the 1914 are the only full size replicas in existence", he said.
"Other than that, everyone else has only got miniatures. I think that was borne out due to the fact they never expected to lose in 1907, so they just made another one, as it were."
The guest then noted a period where no other players outside Britain had won: "Then from there to 1914, there was no one outside Britain that won it.
"Even Tony Wilding, who was a New Zealander, he lived in Britain, right? So he got a miniature.
"But grandfather got, we believe, the only two full sized replicas and even when we inquired at Wimbledon, they didn't even know."
Baddley interjected: "Which makes it exceptional, because I have to say, when I initially saw it, I just thought 'Well somebody's stolen it, [and] bought it over here. But exceptionally rare. Yes."
He then queried if his grandfather had also clinched the 1907 doubles, to which the guest confirmed: "Yes, he won the doubles in 1907 which was the maiden year as they say, from the point of view that he was the first man to win it but he won the singles and the doubles, which was quite staggering really."
Baddley proceeded to evaluate the impressive collection, stating: "Purely in financial terms, I would have thought the doubles jug is going to be worth, to a collector, let's put it that way, well in excess of $20,000 or £8,000."
Examining a worn racket, the expert enquired if it was the one used in one of the championships, but the guest confessed uncertainty.
"But certainly used by him, it's probably $5,000 or £2,000," Baddley estimated.
The moment arrived to assess the centrepiece, the renowned Wimbledon trophy replica.
Baddley declared: "But what's this worth? I mean, only one other replica known, which you also own, and obviously the original is at Wimbledon, but a massively important trophy to tennis enthusiasts.
"It's difficult to come up with a price but I think at auction, you're talking about a figure well in excess of $75,000 or £30,000. So a fantastic piece."
The guest, unfazed by the whopping estimate, solemnly stated: "I believe grandfather believed these belong to Australia, not an individual."
When Baddley mooted the idea of donating it to a sporting museum, the guest expressed his agreement and preference.
In a personal twist, the expert revealed his own familial ties to the trophy: "I also have a personal interest in this, because, I don't know if you have noticed but, if I can pick it up here, on the side there is 1893. W Bradley, Wilfrey Bradley.
"Well my name's John Badley. And he's a distant relation of mine.", he disclosed, connecting him to the artefact's history.
Upon hearing this, the guest exclaimed: "How wonderful."
Baddley, embracing the moment, quipped: "So I hope you don't mind if I give it a quick kiss", affectionately pecking the coveted award to the guest's merriment.
Then, embracing Wimbledon tradition, Badley hoisted the trophy aloft as he announced: "And then I do the classic", earning applause from spectators.
To which the guest beamed: "That's wonderful Jon", before Baddley humorously hinted: "I'll take it with me now", playfully pretending to abscond with the prestigious trophy, eliciting laughter all around.

TNT Sports pundit takes selfie live on TV – 'I'm going to get in trouble'
Former professional cyclist Adam Blythe was in Italy covering the Giro d'Italia for TNT Sports when he decided the perfect time for a selfie with Wout van Aert Cycling fans at the Giro d'Italia witnessed more than just the race drama as TNT Sports commentator Adam Blythe grabbed the attention following an impromptu moment with cycling star Wout van Aert. The 35-year-old British ex-pro cyclist turned heads with a provocative request to Van Aert, later confessing he'd likely get in "trouble" for his antics. Unaware that the cameras were rolling live, Blythe was spotted engaging Van Aert amidst a flurry of riders and media on an Italian thoroughfare, seeking to snap a "get a quick picture" with the Belgian star. Instructing his crew to wait, Blythe juggled his phone, setting up for what seemed the perfect selfie opportunity with Van Aert. It wasn't long before TNT presenter Orla Chennaoui caught sight of the unwitting blunder, asking: "Why is he looking at his phone?," then adding: "Is he really doing this? Adam, you're live on TV, could you leave the selfie until later?". Realisation dawned upon Blythe as he swiftly informed Van Aert they were "live on television", smoothly transitioning to a traditional interview setup with the Belgian sprinter. Though Van Aert entered the Giro with soaring expectations, initial stages proved challenging. Yet, he rebounded with victory in Siena during the strade bianche phase, a triumph he delved into with Blythe during their on-air exchange, reports the Express. "Yeah, good feeling relieved that we're almost over the mountains," he said. "Tomorrow is one of the few real opportunities for the sprinters so I think we're really focused for tomorrow." Although his main role was support, Van Aert demonstrated sublime teamwork at the famed Italian race as he helped his Team Visma-Lease-a-Bike colleague, Simon Yates, snatch the coveted maglia rosa, virtually sealing his triumph in the overall standings. Quick to exit the scene, Blythe made a swift departure from the interview, quipping: "Well, I have to go as I'm going to get in trouble." He later shared the amusing episode on Instagram with his followers, captioning it humorously: "Forgot I was on Tele". In Verres, Italy, the intense terrain put cyclists through their paces. With Sunday fast approaching, Rome gears up to host the grand finale where deeply determined riders will vie for a slice of the £1.3 million prize pool. Reflecting over his initial week's adversity, Van Aert remained upbeat, as per Cycling News. "I am very satisfied with how it has turned out. "I had hoped for a nicer start, but I have recovered well. The stage win remains a highlight and has ensured that my Giro has been successful." Meanwhile Blythe is carving out his niche as a trusted pundit on Eurosport for all things cycling, and provided in-depth reports for NBC Sports at the Tour de France in both 2020 and 2021.

Billie Piper's role in Wednesday has Doctor Who fans 'giddy' for odd reason
Billie Piper has been cast in Netflix's Wednesday, and fans are convinced her character will be linked to her Doctor Who alter-ego, Rose Tyler Billie Piper has landed a role in the upcoming second season of Netflix's Wednesday, and the news has left Doctor Who fans abuzz with excitement as her character could pay homage to her iconic portrayal of Rose Tyler. The 42-year-old star famously played the Doctor's companion Rose in the BBC sci-fi series between 2005 and 2006 and has made several cameos since. She is remembered fondly by fans for her part in reviving the series alongside Christopher Eccleston and helping to usher in the 10th Doctor, David Tennant. Now, it appears she might be giving a subtle nod to Rose in her new TV gig. Billie has snagged the role of Capri in the forthcoming second season of Wednesday, a TV adaptation of The Addams Family that stars Jenna Ortega as the titular moody teenager. While specifics about her character will remain secret until the show's August release, rumour has it she'll be taking charge of the music department at Nevermore Academy. However, it's the revelation that her character, Capri, is reportedly a werewolf, that has sent Doctor Who fans into a speculative frenzy. A TikTok video by a user named Dhean has highlighted an intriguing connection between werewolves and the era of Doctor Who featuring Rose Tyler, sparking theories among fans that this parallel is more than a mere coincidence. In the video, Dhean points out: "You know the show is set in a world full of mythical creatures? She's playing a werewolf. She could be a villain. A bad wolf. Like Rose in Doctor Who!" Fans of Doctor Who will fondly remember Billie Piper's storyline, particularly the intriguing mystery surrounding the Bad Wolf. This phrase peppered the 2005 series until it was finally unveiled that Rose herself transformed into the Bad Wolf entity after her encounter with the heart of the TARDIS and its Time Vortex. The intense absorption of Vortex energy almost obliterated Rose, but the Doctor, played at the time by Christopher Eccleston, absorbed this near-fatal power himself to rescue her. Such a sacrifice had grave repercussions on his biological makeup, triggering the regeneration into David Tennant's portrayal of the charismatic Time Lord. Viewers of Dhean's video were astounded by the clever connection between Billie's various roles. They expressed their eagerness for her character in the upcoming season of Wednesday to be dubbed "Bad Wolf" as an honourable nod. One follower exclaimed: "If they don't reference it by calling her a 'bad wolf', I'm going to be disappointed." Another chimed in: "My geeky little heart loves this!". Billie is joining a star-studded lineup for the sophomore season of Wednesday. Alongside returning cast members such as Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Emma Myers, the likes of Steve Buscemi, Thandiwe Newton, Joanna Lumley, Christopher Lloyd and Lady Gaga are all set to have their series debuts.
