From peanut butter to strawberries and cream – We put three protein supplements to the test

The Irish Sun02-08-2025
PROTEIN supplements may have been a gym bunny obsession a few years ago but now they have gone mainstream.
Across all sports nutrition products, sales in supermarkets were up 47 per cent this January compared to last year, according to data from Kantar.
Today I've put three protein supplements to the test . . .

Try C4 Energy's Reese's Peanut Butter whey protein
C4 Energy has launched its first range of protein in collaboration with confectionary giant Hershey's.
It has a great 25 grams of whey protein in each serving, with zero added sugars.
There are two flavours – Reese's Peanut Butter & Chocolate and Hershey's Milk Chocolate.
I tried the peanut butter. Each 37g serving – taken with 200ml water – comes in at 128 calories with 2.3g fat and 1.8g sugar.
It tastes like the real deal without the guilt. It mixes easily in water and tastes even better with milk.
13 servings, £20,
LATTE

More have released a protein iced matcha latte
THE protein iced matcha latte from More is a mix of 60 per cent whey protein concentrate, 18 per cent calcium caseinate (basically milk protein mixed with calcium), ten per cent matcha powder, plus cream powder, thickener and emulsifiers.

There is also glucomannan – a fibre from the konjac plant known for helping keep you regular. It doesn't have added sugar but does have sweeteners.
The drink has 20g of protein per serving.
I lost 65 lbs thanks to my high-protein banana oatmeal muffins - they're the perfect breakfast and easy to batch make
You mix 25g powder with 300ml of cold water, milk or dairy-free alternative to create your drink. With water, there is 52 calories per 100ml, 2.3g fat and 0.4g sugar.
Great on a morning because you've got the caffeine from the matcha to give you a boost.
It mixed well, with virtually no residue left after stirring and was thick and creamy.
£35.99 for 20 servings,
STRAWBERRIES & CREAM

Try the Strawberries and Cream Protein Shake from Grenade
GRENADE'S Strawberries and Cream Protein Shake is a summery way to up your intake.
It is sweet without being sickly and very decadent.
One of five new flavours, it has just 7g of sugar, 184 calories and 4g fat per 330ml bottle.
Grenade claims this is up to 68 per cent LESS sugar than competitors – and there is 26g of protein in each shake.
I liked that you could buy these ready-made, which saves the hassle of mixing up a powder if you are on the go.
They do contain 0.34g salt, which might be important if you are watching your intake.

White Ferns gear up for World Cup with Chennai drill ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, 2025

The current ICC Women's T20 World Cup holders New Zealand are leaving no stone unturned to secure a rare double by winning the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, all set to be staged in India and Sri Lanka in the upcoming months. Ramping up their preparations for the global megaevent, which is to start on 30 September, White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer and assistant coach Craig McMillan are overseeing 10 New Zealand players in the two week camp being held at Chennai Super Kings academy in Chennai. Highlights: Best of Sophie Devine | CWC22 'It's currently winter in New Zealand, there's no cricket and we're nearly two months out of the World Cup,' Sawyer discussed the camp's purpose with ESPNcricinfo. 'To have that prep time in India, we've been able to bring seven contracted players and then three of our players of interest along. So, the girls that we think will play lots of cricket in India in the future as well.' Among the seven contracted players are seam all-rounder Jess Kerr, young opener Georgia Plimmer and all-rounder Brooke Halliday, whereas Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire and Emma McLeod are the emerging players in the mix. Fluent Halliday seizes the initiative | Final | WT20WC 2024 Apart from the cricketing aspect, New Zealand are also looking at ways to get their players to adapt to the subcontinental conditions. The management is taking inputs from High Performance Sport New Zealand and Dr. Kirsty Fairbairn, an expert dietitian, who has worked with White Ferns as well as Black Ferns (the women's rugby side of New Zealand). 'We've actually tried to train really hard the last five days and I guess in a way not to recover, try to just do it naturally and let your bodies adapt to the conditions," Sawyer discussed New Zealand's plans. 'And now we're playing the three games, we'll try and recover really well. But yeah, we've actually tried to expose ourselves as much to the heat as we can.' The camp will feature three one-day games, after which there will be one-dayers against England in Dubai and the warm-ups ahead of the Women's Cricket World Cup (against South Africa and India in Bengaluru), giving New Zealand ample game time in the subcontinental conditions ahead of the event proper. 'It's hugely beneficial and even more so this year because we've had no official matches since February," Sawyer added. 'So to get these three one-day games in Chennai, to get two or three games in Dubai against England, a really strong opposition, will be great and then we also get the two World Cup warm-up games. So that's seven or eight games we're going to get in similar conditions. Yeah, that's just huge for us.' New Zealand begin their campaign against arch-rivals Australia in Indore on 1 October, 2025. Titans' Tyjae Spears has high ankle sprain

Titans running back Tyjae Spears suffered an apparent high ankle sprain during Saturday night's postseason game. Spears was carted off the field and a high ankle sprain was the initial diagnosis, according to Turron Davenport of ESPN. Titans coach Brian Callahan said after the game that it's too soon to say how much time Spears will miss. 'Further evaluation. We'll see. Looks like it's probably an ankle, we'll see what the severity is as we evaluate it a little further,' Callahan said. Spears is the Titans' backup running back behind Tony Pollard. If Spears isn't ready for the start of the regular season, that would open up an opportunity to rookie sixth-round draft pick Kalel Mullings, who had seven carries for 33 yards on Saturday.
