Microsoft's Quantum Computing Breakthrough, Explained
Last month, Microsoft announced an advance that could be an important step forward in the long road to building a quantum computer—if true.
A Microsoft research team claims to have built 'the world's first quantum processor powered by topological qubits,' and that it is on track to build a prototype of a scalable quantum computer 'in years, not decades.' If that weren't enough, the company also said it had created in the process 'a new state of matter': a topoconductor. This was just days after Microsoft was chosen, along with quantum computing company PsiQuantum, by the U.S. government's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop under-explored approaches to quantum computing, a field that marries traditional computer science, theoretical physics, and mathematics.
The Microsoft chip—Majorana 1, named after the Italian physicist on whose theories the chip was based—is just the latest in a series of attempts by IBM, Google, Nokia Bell Labs, and others to build the basic mechanism that will run quantum computers. It's a massively difficult undertaking because quantum computing uses the principles of quantum mechanics, calling for delicate engineering at the level of subatomic particles.
There's a huge upside to developing computers that go beyond the limitations of today's classical computers. The operating core of computers hasn't changed since the explosion of computing began in the late 1940s: Computer chips still store, manipulate, and work according to our instructions using bits—the 0/1 binary logic of all computers. Today's machines are 'just millions of times faster with millions of times more memory,' says Scott Aaronson, professor of theoretical computer science at the University of Texas at Austin.
That progress has followed the projection of semiconductor pioneer Gordon Moore—in an observation known as Moore's Law—that chip density (and therefore computing speed) should double every two years. Moore believed his law would hold at least through 1985, but it has largely continued to the present day. 'The computing power of a single integrated circuit today is roughly two billion times what it was in 1960,' according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Yet there's always been a limit to how far classical computation can go. One of those limitations was perhaps first stated by physicist Richard Feynman in the early 1980s. His explorations in quantum thermodynamics, electron-photon interactions, and liquid helium made him realize that the complex equations weren't solvable by classical computers. It's an issue of scale—quantum computing requires massive numbers of inputs that a classical computer, no matter how fast, will never efficiently handle.
But Feynman, then others, saw that quantum mechanics could offer a way out of the problem. What if we could make a processor that ran on the laws of quantum mechanics?
Instead of using bits of 0s and 1s, quantum computers use quantum bits (qubits), which behave in the odd fashion of electrons, photons, and other quantum particles. A qubit can exist in multiple states (called superpositions)—not just 0 or 1 but any position in between. Qubits can also be connected, in a sense, so that a change in one qubit will affect another. A connected group of qubits 'can provide way more processing power than the same number of binary bits,' according to MIT Technology Lab.
Quantum computers are not 'just … like classical computers but faster,' says Chetan Nayak, technical fellow and corporate vice president of quantum hardware at Microsoft. 'Quantum computers are an entirely different modality of computing.'
Nor do quantum computers simply try 'every possible answer in parallel'—another misconception, says Aaronson. Instead, quantum computing is a 'choreograph' of possible states for each qubit, where 'paths leading to [the] wrong answer … cancel each other out' and 'paths leading to the right answer should reinforce each other.'
That could open the era of problem-solving that people from Feynman onward have envisioned. To Aaronson, quantum computing's greatest promise is 'simply the simulation of quantum mechanics itself … to learn about chemical reactions … design new chemical processes, new materials, new drugs, new solar cells, new superconductors.' For DARPA, that means 'faster automation, improved target recognition and more precise, lethal weapons,' and more robust cybersecurity, according to Defense News.
But the quantum states of qubits are also delicate, and disturbances (called noise) ranging from changes in light or temperature to vibrations can alter their superpositions—and result in errors. This tendency of qubits toward 'decoherence' has been a major hurdle for quantum computing research and development. Today's quantum processors are full of noise and error-prone.
That's where Microsoft's approach could have a distinct advantage over that of its competitors. Topological qubits employ a physical construction that builds in quantum stability. But topological qubits are hard to build, and their results are harder to measure—Microsoft's qubit project is 'the longest-running R&D program in Microsoft history,' says Nayak. As of last September, IBM and Google had built 127- and 72-qubit processors, respectively, versus Microsoft's 8. If Nayak's team can successfully build a more stable processor at scale it may, in its way, be as big a step in quantum computing as the transistor was in classical computing.
The question is whether Microsoft has truly built such a processor at all. On the same February day Nature published the company's peer-reviewed paper (which stopped short of offering proof of its claim to have built a topological qubit), Microsoft posted a press release and met with a few hundred researchers and others to review the Nature paper and announce the team's progress since the paper's submission early last year.
The press release was triumphant: 'Majorana 1: the world's first Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) powered by a Topological Core, designed to scale to a million qubits on a single chip… With the core building blocks now demonstrated … we're ready to move from physics breakthrough to practical implementation.' It sure sounded as if Microsoft had built a topoconductor.
As Aaronson wrote on his blog, Shtetl-Optimized, 'Microsoft is unambiguously claiming to have created a topological qubit, and they just published a relevant paper in Nature, but their claim to have created a topological qubit has not yet been accepted by peer review.'
Henry Legg, a physicist at the University of St. Andrews, was more blunt: 'The optimism is definitely there, but the science isn't there.' A bit premature on Microsoft's part, perhaps. Regardless, Aaronson hasn't been this bullish on quantum computing in his 25-plus-year career. 'This past year or two is the first time I've felt like the race to build a scalable fault-tolerant quantum computer is actually underway.'

If Microsoft's Windows operating system popularized the multi-application interface, then Apple is trying to imagine what your floating tabs would look like if they were truly see-through glass panes. MacOS has jumped from macOS 15 Sequoia all the way to macOS 26, and it will sport a new look to bring it in line with every other Apple OS. There's not much need to worry. Apple showed at WWDC25 how macOS 26 will still be very familiar to anybody with experience with Apple's UI, but there are a few new features that will make Mac a little easier to use alongside an iPhone. Taking a page from the Apple Vision Pro and its 'glassmorphism'-type aesthetic, everything on Mac now sports a 'Liquid Glass' look, in line with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26. This means all your regular borders around your open windows are semi-transparent. The menu bar is now completely transparent, while the Dock is similarly changed to have this glassy look. This version of macOS, dubbed Tahoe in honor of the freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains, will also have window buttons with more-rounded, bubble-like designs. If you were hoping for a splash of vibrancy on your desktop, there are more options to color your various folders, and you can add customized emojis to give more visual flair to your desktop. Apple was adamant that Mac users want more 'Continuity' with iPhone. Last year brought iPhone mirroring, but now users will be able to use their Phone app synced from their iPhone. Users will be able to see their Contacts and host both audio and video calls. This new Mac app also works with live translations and call screening introduced on iOS 26. If you have your iPhone nearby your Mac, macOS 26 will also provide quick updates about your incoming Uber ride or Calendar events. You'll be able to take actions on your iPhone from these Live Activity popups through the iPhone mirroring app. If you're one of those Mac users who often forgets Spotlight exists, Apple hopes you'll find it far more useful with enhanced controls for searching for that one PDF or image. Better yet, Spotlight should also support third-party cloud storage services. Spotlight should include more capabilities to take actions without having to pick up a mouse or move to the trackpad. You should be able to take specific actions in some apps, like sending an email or creating a note. In apps that work with Apple's API, you may be able to take more complex actions. Apple showed how Spotlight could find a specific layer in a photo editing app using Spotlight. Notably, Apple didn't relate this as any kind of newfangled 'AI' capability, despite the feature having strong agentic undertones. All your regular widgets across Apple's ecosystem, like your stock tickers or weather app, will have this kind of digital glass look that will showcase a modicum of transparency for what's behind each application. This is most apparent with the revised Safari browser. Apple's older grey box now sports an address bar that acts more like a windowpane. Sidebars and toolbars similarly showcase more of what's happening underneath. The new look may take some getting used to, but despite its glassy appearance, not so much is changing that you won't be able to find all your usual functions. I personally don't see much wrong with the glass-like texture now overriding the entire Apple ecosystem, though it could make the experience feel same-y whether I'm diving into my Mac for heads-down work or tapping on my iPad mini for quick note-taking. Other than looks, the Mac itself isn't getting so many obvious enhancements. While the iPhone is getting a Preview-type app and the iPad may be better at multitasking, the macOS 26 can instead look forward to Messages that will let users set a background image and create polls. The Messages app will facilitate new AI translation capabilities as well. If you were one of those strange people who still used AI-generated Genmojis after the first try, then you'll be happy to know the update will let you combine two emojis in one. Why Apple's stock suddenly dropped a few minutes into its WWDC keynote
Apple shares sudden dropped a few minutes into its WWDC keynote on Monday. The culprit appears to be one word: Siri. About six minutes into the presentation, Apple's stock abruptly fell more than 2.5%, from roughly $206 to below $201. That's the equivalent of $75 billion in market value. Just seconds earlier, Apple software chief Craig Federighi was on stage recapping the Apple Intelligence features the company had already rolled out in recent months, such as Genmoji, smart replies, photo cleanup tools . Then he pivoted to Siri. That's when things got awkward. "We're continuing our work to deliver the features that make Siri even more personal," Federighi said. "This work needed more time to reach our high quality bar, and we look forward to sharing more about it in the coming year." Translation: Apple's long-promised AI revamp of Siri still isn't ready. Investors probably didn't like hearing that. Wall Street has been hoping and waiting for big AI advances from Apple for about a year. Expectations were not that high that WWDC 2025 would produce massive new progress here. However, competitors such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are racing ahead, with new generative AI models, chatbot upgrades and features coming out across the industry every week. Instead, on Monday Apple reiterated its message that major AI features are still in the works. Earlier this year, Apple had to pull ads after an industry watchdog said the company's "available now" claims about Apple Intelligence. including next-gen Siri, overstated what was actually ready. The delay underscores a deeper problem: Apple has been slow to build the infrastructure and foundational models that power modern AI. Apple's old playbook was to stay quiet until everything was perfect. But in the AI arms race, waiting may not win. These days, just admitting you're not ready is sometimes enough to wipe out tens of billions in market value.

National Advertising Division Finds Certain Microsoft Copilot Claims Supported; Recommends Others be Modified or Discontinued
As part of its routine marketplace monitoring program, BBB National Programs' National Advertising Division found that Microsoft Corporation supported certain express functionality claims for Microsoft 365 Copilot but recommended that certain productivity claims and certain claims related to Business Chat be modified or discontinued. New York, NY, June 09, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As part of its routine marketplace monitoring program, BBB National Programs' National Advertising Division found that Microsoft Corporation supported certain express functionality claims for Microsoft 365 Copilot but recommended that certain productivity claims and certain claims related to Business Chat be modified or discontinued. The National Advertising Division (NAD) reviewed express and implied claims made by Microsoft on its website for its Microsoft 365 Copilot AI-powered digital assistant product. Launched for its enterprise customers in November 2023, the Copilot name is used across all Microsoft 365 suite applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Business Chat. Generating, Summarizing, and Rewriting from Files NAD examined several claims made throughout Microsoft's website about Copilot's capabilities to generate, summarize, and rewrite from files, including its capacity to 'synthesize and summarize large amounts of data,' to brainstorm and draft content in Business Chat, and to draft outlines for PowerPoint presentations. In the context in which these claims are made, NAD determined that these claims convey the message that Copilot works seamlessly with all user files and can generate content, rewrite documents, generate summaries, or create PowerPoint presentations from a user's files with no material limitations on file type, size, length, or the number of files to which a user can refer and link. NAD found that Microsoft provided reasonable support for the express claims about how Copilot can summarize and draft new content sufficient to demonstrate that they are substantiated. Although limitations on Copilot's functionality were not disclosed directly in the claims, NAD determined the limitations did not impact how consumers use Copilot. Use Across Apps and Business Chat NAD reviewed Microsoft's claims that Copilot can assist users with '[g]et[ting] up to speed in less time' by 'working seamlessly across all your data' and that Business Chat 'helps you ground your prompts in work and web data in the flow of work.' NAD determined that one message reasonably conveyed by the use of the terms 'seamlessly' and 'in the flow of work' was that actions across apps are uninterrupted or continuous, with less manual steps required. NAD examined whether consumers understood the differences in functionality, specifically as it relates to Business Chat. NAD concluded, based on the context of the claims and universal use of the product description as 'Copilot,' that consumers would not necessarily understand the differences. Microsoft provided evidence demonstrating that Copilot helps users 'get up to speed in less time,' 'carry out specific goals and tasks' in Word and other apps, and 'ground… prompts in work and web data.' However, Business Chat cannot generate a document in other applications as manual steps are required for Business Chat to produce the same results as Copilot in a specific Microsoft 365 app. NAD recommended that Microsoft modify its advertising to clearly and conspicuously disclose any material limitations related to how Business Chat assists users. Productivity and ROI NAD reviewed Microsoft's claims about Copilot's productivity and ROI benefits, including that '67%, 70%, and 75% of users say they are more productive' after 6, 10, and over 10 weeks based on the Copilot Usage in the Workplace Study showing perceived productivity gains over time. NAD found that although the study demonstrates a perception of productivity, it does not provide a good fit for the objective claim at issue. As a result, NAD recommended the claim be discontinued or modified to disclose the basis for the claim. During the inquiry, Microsoft informed NAD that in the ordinary course of business it had permanently discontinued certain productivity claims. Therefore, NAD did not review the claims on their merits and will treat the discontinued claims, for compliance purposes, as though NAD recommended they be discontinued. In its advertiser's statement, Microsoft stated that 'although we disagree with NAD's conclusions' about certain elements of the decision, Microsoft 'appreciates the opportunity to participate in this proceeding and will follow NAD's recommendations for clarifying its claims.'
